A Day of Unexpected Treasures
As I sit down to write about today, I'm filled with a sense of contentment and pleasant surprise. Sometimes, the best days are the ones you don't plan too rigidly, allowing room for spontaneity and unexpected discoveries. Today in Todra Gorge was one of those days. With my family by my side, I embraced the unknown, and we were rewarded with experiences that will stay with us long after we leave this majestic place.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant La Place. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Moroccan coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. Omar was particularly excited about the pastries, and Lena enjoyed a traditional Moroccan soup. I savored a simple omelet, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, setting a positive tone for the day. After breakfast, we decided to explore the Gorges de Tarakhsa.

The drive to Gorges de Tarakhsa was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed as we moved away from the main gorge, revealing a more rugged and untouched beauty. The towering cliffs seemed to whisper ancient stories, and the winding roads offered breathtaking views at every turn. Even Omar, usually engrossed in his games, was captivated by the scenery.
Upon arriving at Gorges de Tarakhsa, we were immediately struck by its serene atmosphere. It was less crowded than the main Todra Gorge, allowing us to truly appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings. We embarked on a leisurely hike, marveling at the unique rock formations and the crystal-clear stream that meandered through the gorge. The hike was relatively easy, making it perfect for Omar, who enjoyed splashing in the shallow water and collecting interesting stones.
“Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found when you venture off the beaten path and embrace the unexpected.”
After our hike, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Restaurant les jardins de todgha, a place I had read about that promised a blend of Moroccan and international cuisine. The restaurant was nestled amidst lush gardens, providing a peaceful and picturesque setting. We opted to dine on the terrace, overlooking the verdant landscape.

The menu was indeed a delightful mix of flavors. Lena chose a traditional tagine, infused with aromatic spices, while I decided to try their international dish of pasta. Omar, as always, went for the familiar comfort of grilled chicken. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed family lunch.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set our sights on our next destination: Kasba ancienne kaserne millitaire. This historical landmark promised a glimpse into Morocco's rich past, and I was eager to explore it with my family. As we approached the Kasba, its imposing structure stood as a testament to centuries of history. The architecture was fascinating, a blend of traditional Moroccan design and military functionality. We wandered through the ancient corridors, imagining the soldiers who once occupied this space.

Exploring the Kasba ancienne kaserne millitaire offered a tangible connection to Morocco's past. We learned about the various dynasties that had ruled this region and the strategic importance of the Kasba throughout history. It was a humbling experience, reminding us of the layers of time and the stories etched into these ancient walls.
As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in a little relaxation. We made our way to Café Restaurant Marrakech, a local spot known for its refreshing beverages and laid-back atmosphere. We sipped on mint tea, a Moroccan staple, and enjoyed the gentle breeze. Omar, of course, opted for a cold juice, while Lena and I savored the aromatic tea. The café provided a perfect vantage point for people-watching, and we enjoyed observing the local life unfolding around us.

The menu was a celebration of Moroccan flavors, and we eagerly ordered a variety of dishes to share.

We savored a fragrant lamb tagine, a flavorful couscous, and succulent grilled meats. Each dish was prepared with fresh ingredients and aromatic spices, creating a symphony of tastes that danced on our palates. The meal was a true culinary journey, immersing us in the heart of Moroccan culture.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our adventures. We had explored hidden gorges, delved into history, and savored the flavors of Morocco. But more importantly, we had created lasting memories as a family. These are the moments that make travel so special, the unexpected discoveries and shared experiences that weave together to form a tapestry of joy and connection. Thinking of tomorrow, we plan to visit Gorges de l'oued Ahansal and Cape of Good Hope, Tinghir. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks or ticking off items on a bucket list. It's about embracing the unknown, connecting with local culture, and creating meaningful moments with loved ones. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful world with my family.
Before I end this entry, I wanted to share a little anecdote from our visit to Kasba ancienne kaserne millitaire. As we were exploring the ancient structure, Omar stumbled upon a small, hidden alcove. Inside, he found a smooth, grey stone that fit perfectly in his hand. He declared it his “magic stone” and insisted on carrying it with him for the rest of the day. It was a simple, innocent moment, but it perfectly captured the spirit of our day: finding magic in the ordinary and treasure in the unexpected.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I’m reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan explorer:
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
And so, I continue my journey, eager to collect more stories and share them with you, my dear readers. Until tomorrow, may your own travels be filled with unexpected treasures and unforgettable moments.
