Finding Serenity in Art and Reflection

Today, on my fifth day on Naoshima, I sought to delve deeper into the island's soul, venturing beyond the famed museums to discover its hidden corners. It was a day of quiet reflection, punctuated by surprising artistic encounters and the simple pleasures of local cuisine. It's funny how sometimes the most profound experiences come from the places you least expect.

My day began with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore the lesser-known gems of Naoshima. After a peaceful night at My Lodge Naoshima, I was ready to embrace whatever the day had in store. I still miss Astrid and Lasse, but I know they support my need to explore and immerse myself in this unique destination. I made sure to pack my camera and sketchbook, ready to capture the essence of the island. I also remembered to pack my travel guidebook.

First on my itinerary was Gokurakuji Temple. As I approached the temple, a sense of tranquility washed over me. The gentle ascent up the small hill leading to the temple was lined with lush greenery, creating a calming backdrop. The temple itself was a humble yet striking structure, embodying traditional Japanese design. I took my time exploring the grounds, appreciating the intricate details of the architecture and the serene gardens. It was a perfect place for quiet contemplation, away from the crowds that often gather at the more popular art sites. It was a very calming start to the day, offering a moment of peace before diving back into the contemporary art scene.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of reflection.

After my visit to Gokurakuji Temple, I made my way to the Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake. This installation was a complete contrast to the temple's serenity. Located near the Benesse House area, the Shipyard Works seamlessly integrated art with the island's industrial heritage. Otake's innovative use of materials and forms was truly remarkable. As I wandered through the exhibit, I was enveloped by a blend of creativity and nature. The repurposed elements of the shipyard had been transformed into striking works of art, reflecting both the history of the site and the beauty of the natural world. I spent a good hour here, taking photos and sketching the unique structures against the backdrop of the sea and sky. It was fascinating to see how Otake had breathed new life into this once-forgotten space, turning it into a vibrant and thought-provoking art installation. I was impressed by how the artist repurposed the elements of the shipyard, turning them into striking works of art that reflect both the history of the site and the beauty of the natural world. It reminded me a bit of my own work, breathing new life into old furniture.

For lunch, I decided to try Issen, located on the ground floor of the Benesse House Museum. The restaurant offered stunning views of the Inland Sea and the surrounding modern art. I opted for a traditional Japanese lunch set, featuring fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables. The presentation was exquisite, and the flavors were delicate and refined. It was a truly memorable dining experience, enhanced by the extraordinary setting. The large windows allowed me to appreciate the view of the Inland Sea and modern art from any seat while I enjoyed my meal. It was a perfect way to refuel before continuing my exploration of the island.

Next on my list was the Walking Ark. I took the local bus towards Honmura and then walked for about 15 minutes to reach the open-air museum. The Walking Ark is a captivating collection of sculptures and artistic exhibits, harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape. As I strolled through the curated paths, I was struck by the way art and nature intertwined. The sculptures, crafted by talented artists, often reflected themes of community, nature, and culture. I also spotted a few of the local feline residents, adding a charming touch to my visit. The tranquil setting and scenic views made it a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. The Walking Ark served as a poignant reminder of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, envisioned as a symbol of hope and resilience.

After a day filled with art and exploration, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Shimacoya. This unique shop combined a café, bookstore, and guesthouse, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I browsed through the selection of used books, artisanal crafts, and local goods, eventually settling on a small, hand-painted Naoshima souvenir. The friendly staff shared stories about the island's rich artistic heritage, making me feel even more connected to this special place. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.

For dinner, I ventured to Gumbo Hut Shioya, a charming restaurant specializing in authentic Cajun cuisine. It might seem odd to find Cajun food in Japan, but the restaurant had gained a reputation among locals and tourists alike. The retro vibe and friendly ambiance made it a perfect spot to unwind after a long day. I ordered their signature gumbo, which was rich, flavorful, and surprisingly authentic. It was a unique and memorable dining experience, a taste of Louisiana in the heart of Naoshima. I chatted with the owner, who shared his passion for Cajun cuisine and his love for the island. It was a delightful end to a day filled with unexpected discoveries.
