Whispers of the Nile and Pharaohs
Today was a day of contrasts, a serene escape followed by a deep dive into the heart of ancient Egypt. It’s funny how travel can surprise you; sometimes the most profound experiences come when you least expect them. Today, Luxor revealed yet another layer of its captivating soul.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Sofra. The rooftop terrace, with its white curtains billowing gently in the morning breeze, offered a tranquil start. I opted for the *foul medames*, a traditional Egyptian dish of mashed fava beans, seasoned with herbs and spices. It was a hearty and flavorful way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Astrid enjoyed a simple omelet, while Lasse, ever the adventurous one, tried the *shakshuka*, eggs poached in a spicy tomato sauce. It reminded me of our times in Italy, although the spices were distinctly Egyptian. I must admit, I miss Silkeborg and the simple pleasures of Astrid's cooking sometimes, but these new culinary experiences certainly make up for it!

From Sofra, we set out to explore Amira’s Island. Getting there involved a short ferry ride from Luxor to Al Qarnah, which in itself was a delightful experience. The Nile shimmered under the morning sun, and the views of the Luxor skyline slowly receding into the distance were simply breathtaking. As we approached the island, the bustling city faded away, replaced by a sense of calm and tranquility. Amira’s Island is a haven of lush greenery, offering a peaceful retreat from the lively streets of Luxor. We strolled along the riverbank, soaking in the stunning views and enjoying the refreshing breeze. The island felt untouched, a world away from the throngs of tourists that flock to the temples and tombs. Lasse, of course, was in his element, snapping photos of everything that moved – from the local fishermen casting their nets to the vibrant birdlife flitting through the trees.

The island’s charm lies in its unspoiled beauty and the opportunity to witness the daily lives of local fishermen and farmers, providing a glimpse into the traditional ways of life that have persisted through the ages.
After a couple of hours of blissful relaxation on Amira’s Island, we headed back to the mainland for lunch at Aisha restaurant Luxor. This place was recommended to us by a local, and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional Egyptian dishes. I decided to try the grilled lamb, while Astrid opted for the lentil soup. Lasse, predictably, went for the *kebab*. The food was delicious, bursting with authentic flavors and spices. It was a welcome change from some of the more touristy restaurants we had tried earlier in the trip.

With our bellies full and our spirits refreshed, we embarked on the afternoon’s main event: a visit to KV17, the Tomb of Seti I. This was something I had been particularly looking forward to. The Tomb of Seti I requires a separate ticket, and it is significantly more expensive than the standard Valley of the Kings entry. However, I had read so much about its exquisite decorations and well-preserved state that I felt it was worth the splurge.
As we descended into the depths of the tomb, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The Tomb of Seti I is one of the longest and deepest in the Valley of the Kings, with a complex layout of corridors, chambers, and stairways. The walls were covered in vibrant murals and intricate hieroglyphs, depicting scenes from ancient Egyptian mythology and religious texts. The colors were remarkably well-preserved, and the level of detail was simply astounding. It felt as though we were stepping back in time, walking through the afterlife with Seti I himself.

What struck me most was the sheer artistry on display. The ancient Egyptian artists were masters of their craft, creating images of incredible beauty and power. The astronomical ceiling in the burial chamber was particularly impressive, depicting the night sky with its constellations and celestial figures. It was a reminder of the Egyptians' deep understanding of the cosmos and their belief in the cyclical nature of life and death.
As we wandered through the tomb, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. To think that these paintings had been created over three thousand years ago, and that they had survived the ravages of time and the elements, was truly remarkable. It was a testament to the skill and dedication of the ancient Egyptian artists, and to the enduring power of their culture.
Visiting the Tomb of Seti I was an unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. It was a reminder of the incredible richness and complexity of ancient Egyptian civilization, and of the enduring legacy they left behind. It also reminded me of the importance of preserving these treasures for future generations to appreciate and learn from. I thought back to my workshop in Silkeborg, surrounded by antique furniture, each piece holding its own stories and history. In a way, restoring furniture is not so different from exploring these ancient tombs – both are about preserving the past and bringing it back to life.
After our exploration of the Valley of the Kings, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at The Lantern Room Restaurant. It was a perfect way to end the day, with its warm and inviting atmosphere and its diverse menu of Egyptian and international dishes. Astrid and I shared a bottle of Egyptian wine, while Lasse enjoyed a refreshing lemonade. We reminisced about our adventures of the day, and made plans for our final day in Luxor tomorrow. We're planning to visit Carter House and Deir El-Shelwit Temple, and maybe even do some souvenir shopping. I’m hoping to find a nice piece of local craftsmanship to bring back to Silkeborg. It will be a reminder of our incredible journey to Egypt.

Before heading back to the Iberotel Luxor, we made a quick stop at El-Gezira Hotel & Restaurant for a nightcap. It was a lovely spot with a relaxed vibe, and the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Luxor with my family. It was a trip that we would all remember for the rest of our lives.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the profound sense of history that permeates every corner of Luxor. From the tranquil beauty of Amira's Island to the awe-inspiring majesty of the Tomb of Seti I, this city is a treasure trove of ancient wonders. It is a place that challenges your perceptions, expands your horizons, and leaves you with a deep appreciation for the enduring power of human civilization. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I can't help but wonder what other secrets Luxor will reveal to us tomorrow.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Luxor adventure. We plan to visit the Carter House, offering a glimpse into the life of the archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, and the Deir El-Shelwit Temple, dedicated to Isis. Perhaps we’ll even squeeze in some last-minute souvenir shopping before we bid farewell to this captivating city. It’s been an unforgettable journey, filled with ancient wonders and cherished family moments. I am already looking forward to sharing our stories and experiences with friends back in Silkeborg, and perhaps inspiring them to embark on their own Egyptian adventure. For now, *buona notte* from Luxor!
