Day 6: A Day of Ducks, Rivers, and Local Flavors in Phong Nha
Immerse yourself in Phong Nha's charm with duck massages, river views, and delicious Vietnamese cuisine on a solo adventure.
Quirky Charms and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of unexpected joys and simple pleasures. Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan, the detours that lead to unique and memorable moments. Phong Nha has a way of surprising you, and today was no exception. I set out with a vague plan, and ended up with a day full of laughter, delicious food, and a deeper appreciation for the local culture.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at The Rice House. I opted for the tomato tofu, a dish that came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The tofu had a wonderful texture, and the sauce was both savory and slightly sweet. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The weather in December here is mild, with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 22°C, making it ideal for exploring.
My first stop was the Bờ bắc sông Son, the northern bank of the Son River. The riverbanks were bustling with activity, and I watched as locals went about their daily routines. The views were serene, and I took a moment to simply soak it all in. I thought of Astrid and Lasse, imagining how much they would have enjoyed the tranquility of the scene. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday. The Son River is a vital part of Phong Nha, and I was happy to spend some time by its banks, observing the rhythm of local life. You can even rent a kayak or boat to enjoy the river.

Next on the agenda was The Duck Stop, a place I had heard about from other travelers. It sounded quirky and fun, and I was curious to see what it was all about. Getting there involved a bit of a ride, but the scenery along the way was stunning. The Duck Stop is a farm where you can feed ducks and ride a buffalo. I decided to go all in and experience everything they had to offer. The highlight was definitely the duck massage, where you let the ducks nibble at your feet. It was ticklish and hilarious, and I couldn't stop laughing. The owner, a friendly and inventive farmer, has created a truly unique experience. I also sampled a Vietnamese pancake, which was delicious.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are the unexpected detours that lead to laughter and unique interactions.
For lunch, I ventured to Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. As someone who appreciates plant-based cuisine, I was eager to try their offerings. The restaurant overlooks the river, providing a pleasant atmosphere. I ordered the rainbow vermicelli salad, and it was a burst of fresh flavors. The staff were friendly and kind, making the experience even more enjoyable. Iced coconut coffee is also a must-try.

As the day wound down, I decided to check out Dubai Pub Phong Nha. I'm not usually one for pub crawls, but I was curious about this place. It turned out to be a cozy bar with a vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed a local Vietnamese beer and chatted with some fellow travelers. The pub had a rustic charm, and it was a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring.

Dinner was at Lotus Restaurant, where I had a delightful meal. The food was beautifully presented, and the flavors were exquisite. It was a perfect way to end the day. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I plan to visit the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of the gardens and learning more about the local flora. I also plan to visit Harry's Coconuts. I'll start the day with breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant, followed by lunch at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant and dinner at Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3. It promises to be another day of exploration and discovery.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm grateful for the unexpected joys and simple pleasures that travel can bring. Phong Nha has a way of capturing your heart, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow holds.
This solo journey has been a reminder of the importance of embracing the unknown and finding beauty in the everyday moments. Sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you don't plan, the detours that lead to unexpected discoveries and a deeper connection with the world around you. I am missing Astrid and Lasse, but I know that they would be happy that I am out here exploring and experiencing new things. I am looking forward to sharing my stories with them when I return home.
The thought of returning to Silkeborg is comforting, but for now, I'm content to soak in the charm of Phong Nha and embrace the adventures that lie ahead. Perhaps I'll even pick up a mosquito repellent before heading to the Botanic Garden tomorrow – a lesson learned from my packing oversight!
Tomorrow I will make sure to visit Phong Nha Botanic Garden, as well as Harry's Coconuts. I will also try out Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant for lunch, and Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3 for dinner.
