A Day of Discovery in Phong Nha

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. I ventured into the depths of the Elephant Cave and reveled in the scenic beauty of the HaVa Valley, all while savoring the local cuisine. The memories created today are ones I will treasure long after I return to Silkeborg.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. The aroma of Vietnamese spices filled the air as I sat down, ready to fuel up for a day of adventure. I opted for a steaming bowl of Pho, a classic Vietnamese noodle soup, which was the perfect way to start the day. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the fresh herbs added a delightful touch. It reminded me of the simple, comforting dishes I often prepare at home for Astrid and Lasse, though with an exotic twist that only Vietnam can provide.

With a satisfied stomach, I made my way towards my first destination: the Elephant Cave. The anticipation was building as I traveled deeper into the national park. The landscape transformed into a dense jungle, with towering trees and lush greenery on either side of the road. I felt a world away from my workshop in Silkeborg, where I spend my days meticulously restoring antique furniture. Here, nature was the artist, and I was merely an observer.

The trek to the Elephant Cave was an adventure in itself. The trail wound through the jungle, and I had to navigate over rocks and through streams. I was grateful for my hiking boots, one of the trip essentials I remembered to pack. However, I couldn't help but think that I should have brought mosquito repellent, a crucial item I had forgotten. The air was thick with humidity, and the buzzing of insects was a constant reminder of the jungle's vibrant ecosystem.

Finally, I reached the entrance of the Elephant Cave. The sheer size of the cave was awe-inspiring. It got its name from the stalactites and stalagmites inside that resemble elephants, a fitting tribute to these gentle giants. As I ventured deeper into the cave, I was struck by the silence and the darkness. The only light came from my headlamp, which illuminated the intricate rock formations and the glistening water droplets on the cave walls. I learned that the cave had served as a stronghold for Vietnamese soldiers during wartime, adding a layer of historical significance to the natural wonder.

The earth has music for those who listen.

Emerging from the Elephant Cave, I felt a sense of accomplishment and wonder. The jungle air was refreshing, and the sunlight was a welcome change after the darkness of the cave. It was time to continue my journey to the HaVa Valley, or Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich as it is known locally.

Before heading to HaVa Valley, I stopped for lunch at Bamboo Chopsticks. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and its commitment to sustainability. I ordered a vegetarian dish made with fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were a delightful mix of sweet, sour, and spicy, and I savored every bite. The restaurant also had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

With renewed energy, I set off for the HaVa Valley. The valley is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, with towering limestone mountains, lush forests, and the serene Chay River. As I entered the valley, I was immediately captivated by the emerald-green landscape. The Chay River meandered through the valley, reflecting the surrounding mountains and forests. The air was fresh and clean, and the atmosphere was one of tranquility and peace.

I decided to take a kayak out on the Chay River. Paddling through the crystal-clear water, I felt a deep connection with nature. The only sounds were the gentle lapping of the water against the kayak and the occasional chirping of birds in the trees. I could have spent hours exploring the river and soaking in the beauty of the HaVa Valley.

After my kayaking adventure, I took some time to relax by the riverbank. I sat on a rock, closed my eyes, and listened to the sounds of nature. The gentle breeze, the rustling of leaves, and the flowing water created a symphony of serenity. It was a moment of pure bliss, a chance to escape the stresses of everyday life and connect with the natural world. I thought of Astrid and Lasse, and how much they would have loved this place. Perhaps one day, I will bring them here to experience the magic of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Phong Nha town. But before heading back to my accommodation, I had one more culinary experience to look forward to: dinner at Son Doong Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its traditional Vietnamese dishes and its cozy, rustic ambiance. I ordered a set platter featuring a variety of local specialties. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the staff and learning more about Vietnamese culture.

Before heading back, I took the opportunity to explore Lá Store, a local shop known for its boho and vintage clothing. While I don't usually indulge in shopping, I found the unique and stylish items quite appealing. It was a fun way to end the day, browsing through the store and admiring the creative designs.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. I had explored a magnificent cave, kayaked through a stunning valley, and savored the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. But more than that, I had connected with nature and with myself. This solo adventure was proving to be a transformative experience, a chance to step outside my comfort zone and discover new facets of my being.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I am excited about the prospect of exploring more of Phong Nha's hidden gems. The itinerary includes a visit to the Bờ bắc sông Son and The Duck Stop, two destinations that promise more unique experiences and cultural insights. I am particularly intrigued by The Duck Stop, which sounds like a quirky and entertaining place. And in the evening, I plan to unwind at the Dubai Pub Phong Nha, a local bar that will hopefully offer a taste of the town's nightlife.

Tonight, however, I will rest, edit my photos, and pen down my thoughts, preserving the memories of this incredible day. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and to share my experiences with you. Until tomorrow, ciao!
