Adieu, Phong Nha!

As my Vietnamese adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past nine days. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has truly captivated me with its stunning landscapes, mysterious caves, and vibrant culture. Today, I intend to savor every last moment, indulging in the local cuisine and soaking in the atmosphere before my journey back to Denmark begins.

The final day started, as many others have, with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. It’s become a familiar and comforting spot, and knowing it was my last chance to enjoy their delicious vegan fare made the meal all the more special. I opted for a steaming bowl of pho, packed with fresh herbs and flavorful broth—a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, I decided to revisit Phong Nha Ke Bang, wanting to absorb its beauty one last time. The park, even under the December sky, possessed a serene and majestic aura. The temperature was mild, hovering between 15°C and 23°C, with a slight breeze making it comfortable for a leisurely stroll. I took my time, breathing in the fresh air and etching the panoramic views into my memory. I thought of Astrid and Lasse, imagining their reactions to this natural wonder. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here to experience it firsthand.

The end of a journey is but the beginning of a thousand new memories waiting to be made.

For lunch, I ventured to The Rice House, a local favorite known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes. I decided to try the *com ga*, a flavorful chicken rice dish that came highly recommended. The blend of spices and the tenderness of the chicken were simply divine, a true testament to the culinary skills of the region. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such diverse and delicious cuisine.

Following lunch, I dedicated some time to souvenir shopping at Phong Nha Collection. I wanted to find something unique to remind me of this incredible place, perhaps a handcrafted item that reflected the local culture. The store had a variety of options, from textiles to woodwork, each telling a story of Vietnamese craftsmanship. I finally settled on a small, intricately carved wooden sculpture, a perfect memento to adorn my study back in Silkeborg.

As the day wound down, I made my way to Son Doong Restaurant for my final dinner in Phong Nha. Located near the Phong Nha tourism boat station, the restaurant is quite large and can accommodate up to 700 people. The restaurant is known for its set platters featuring a variety of Vietnamese dishes. I opted for a selection of local specialties, including fresh spring rolls, grilled pork, and a fragrant fish stew. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a fitting end to my culinary exploration of the region. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling a sense of connection to this community that had welcomed me with open arms.

I thought back to my early days as an apprentice furniture restorer in Arezzo. My father always emphasized the importance of preserving history and cherishing craftsmanship. This trip to Vietnam, in many ways, felt like an extension of that philosophy. Exploring the caves, learning about the local culture, and appreciating the natural beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang was a way of connecting with the past and celebrating the present.

One of the things that struck me most about Phong Nha was the resilience and warmth of its people. Despite the region's turbulent history, the locals have managed to preserve their traditions and maintain a strong sense of community. The impact of Son Doong Cave on the region has been transformative, providing jobs and attracting tourists from all over the world.

As I prepare to leave, I realize that this solo journey has been more than just a vacation. It has been a personal odyssey, a chance to reconnect with myself and gain a new perspective on the world. The solitude has allowed me to reflect on my life in Denmark, my marriage to Astrid, and the joys of raising Lasse. It has also given me a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life: the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the pleasure of discovery.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Silkeborg, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences. I will miss the lush landscapes of Phong Nha, the tantalizing flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, and the genuine smiles of the local people. But I know that this is not goodbye, but rather *arrivederci*. I have a feeling that I will return to Vietnam someday, perhaps with Astrid and Lasse in tow, to share the wonders of this magical place with those I love most.

And so, as the sun sets over Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, I raise a glass to new adventures, cherished memories, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Vietnam, you have stolen a piece of my heart, and I will carry you with me always.

This trip also reminded me of the importance of being prepared. I had forgotten mosquito repellent and a guidebook, which I should add to my list of essentials for future travels. It's the small things that can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.

As I pack my bags and prepare for my departure, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. While I am eager to return to my familiar life in Silkeborg, I know that this journey has changed me in profound ways. I am more open-minded, more appreciative, and more determined to embrace the unknown. And for that, I am eternally grateful to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and the people who have made this adventure so unforgettable.
