A Day of Immersion

Today was a day of contrasts, from the humbling experience of learning about local conservation efforts to the pure joy of swimming in an underground river. Phong Nha-Ke Bang continues to surprise me with its blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. It's a place where every turn offers a new perspective, a new story, and a deeper connection to the world around us.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. The Villas Restaurant is Phong Nha's most beautiful eating place. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of Pho, the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup, which was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The restaurant's setting along the Son River, framed by the stunning karst mountains, was a treat in itself. The dining style is simple and uncomplicated. The Villas is a popular venue for special occasions and bespoke events, where we can create something exclusive for you. The Villas are well known for their restaurant, with people coming here from around the region just to get a fix of good western food.

My first stop was the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. It's located in Phong Nha Village, Son Trach Commune. This wasn't just another tourist spot; it was an opportunity to witness Vietnam's commitment to wildlife preservation firsthand. The enclosure provides a natural habitat for various species, allowing them to roam freely. I learned that the area is known for its beautiful scenery and affordable visitation. It's also a place where animals are readjusted to natural surroundings before being released into the wild. As I walked through the lush greenery, the sounds of the wildlife created a captivating atmosphere. I observed species endemic to the region and gained insights from the knowledgeable staff about the animals' behaviors and the importance of conservation efforts. It was heartening to see animals readjusting to natural surroundings before being released into the wild.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about conquering mountains, but about understanding the delicate balance of life.

Next on the itinerary was Hang Trạ Ang. I was looking forward to swimming in the underground river. The Hang Tra Ang & Paradise Cave tour is a taste of the wonders of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park and is almost suitable for everyone. After a short trek through the jungle, I reached the cave entrance. The water was cool and inviting, a welcome respite from the humid December air. December brings pleasant weather to Phong Nha - Ke Bang, with average temperatures ranging from 18.4°C (65.1°F) to 21.5°C (70.7°F). The average Phong Nha - Ke Bang temperature during December is around 19.9°C (67.82°F). As I swam deeper into the cave, the darkness enveloped me, broken only by the beam of my headlamp. The silence was profound, amplifying the sound of the water and my own breath. It was an exhilarating experience, feeling so connected to the earth and its hidden wonders.

Emerging from Hang Trạ Ang, I was ready for a late lunch. I headed to Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha. The restaurant is slightly away from central Phong Nha but remains accessible via walking or renting scooters. I savored a delicious meal of fresh spring rolls and stir-fried vegetables, enjoying the cozy and welcoming ambiance of the restaurant. The menu is diverse and caters to various tastes, including vegetarian options. Their homemade peanut sauce is a game-changer. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering helpful travel tips and making me feel right at home.

For dinner, I decided to try PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT. The portions are generous. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, enjoying the explosion of flavors and the warmth of the family-run establishment. The owner, Vietj, is described as friendly and accommodating.

To cap off the day, I ventured to Pub with cold beer. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It's located in a very rural area, a few km from city. Your food can take up to 2 hours to prepare, so most people while away the time by tubing down the river or sipping on a beer Huda. It was the perfect spot to unwind, reflect on the day's adventures, and enjoy a cold drink. The pub is famous for their farm-to-table methods. Everything served is grown on their property. It is not very often you arrive at a restaurant and are given the option of catching, killing, cleaning and cooking your own chicken. I decided to just let the family expertly prepare the meal. The morning glory cooked in garlic comes directly from their backyard. The peanuts, which are crushed to make the most incredible peanut sauce you will ever taste. As I sat there, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world.

As I prepare for my final day in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow holds. According to the itinerary, I will be spending the day at Phong Nha Ke Bang. I also plan to visit Phong Nha Collection to pick up a few souvenirs for Astrid and Lasse. I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and experiences with them, and perhaps even inspiring them to embark on their own adventures. Until then, I'll continue to soak in the beauty and wonder of this incredible place.

The trip is coming to an end, and I am heading back to Silkeborg soon. I can't wait to be back in the workshop, but I know I will never forget this trip.
