Adieu, Kyoto: A Day of Silver Linings and Stairway Revelations

As my solo adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken. Today was a day of tying up loose ends, revisiting cherished themes, and savoring the last moments in this captivating city. It's amazing how a place can imprint itself on your soul in just a few days.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten. While technically located in Nara, it was part of a tour I decided to extend to my Kyoto exploration. I was intrigued by their offerings of handcrafted knives and other artisanal goods. It was a delightful experience, and I even picked up a small, beautifully crafted knife as a memento of my trip. The attention to detail was simply astonishing. It was a little detour that gave me a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that Japan is known for.

From there, I travelled to Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as Ginkaku-ji or the Silver Pavilion. Nestled in a tranquil corner of Kyoto, this Zen temple offered a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The crisp morning air carried the scent of pine and damp earth, enhancing the atmosphere of quiet contemplation. As I wandered through the meticulously maintained gardens, I was struck by the understated elegance of the Silver Pavilion itself. Unlike its golden counterpart, Kinkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion exudes a subtle charm that invites introspection. I found myself drawn to the perfectly raked sand garden, Ginshadan, with its iconic cone-shaped mound, Kogetsudai. The simplicity of the design was mesmerizing, and I spent a long time simply sitting and absorbing the peaceful ambiance. The moss garden was equally enchanting, with its lush greenery and winding paths. It felt like stepping into a miniature world, where every stone and plant had been carefully placed to create a sense of harmony.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples, but in the quiet corners where simplicity and nature intertwine.

Afterward, I decided to have lunch at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. I know, I know, Indian food in Japan? But I had heard such great things about it, and I was in the mood for something different. Plus, after so many days of traditional Japanese cuisine, my taste buds were craving a bit of spice. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, and the aroma of exotic spices wafted through the air as I approached. The interior was cozy and inviting, with colorful tapestries and soft lighting. I ordered a thali, which was a feast for the senses. Each dish was bursting with flavor, from the creamy butter chicken to the spicy vindaloo. The naan bread was perfectly fluffy and crisp, and the rice was fragrant and flavorful. It was a delightful culinary experience, and a welcome change of pace from the traditional Japanese fare I had been enjoying. It was a surprising and delightful find, proving that Kyoto has culinary gems hidden in every corner.

In the evening, I made my way to Kyoto Station Daikaidan, the Great Staircase. I had heard so much about this architectural marvel, and I was eager to see it for myself. As I approached the station, I was immediately struck by its modern design, which stood in stark contrast to the traditional buildings I had been visiting all day. The Great Staircase was even more impressive in person, with its soaring height and intricate lighting displays. As I climbed the stairs, I was rewarded with panoramic views of the city skyline. The lights twinkled in the distance, creating a magical atmosphere. The staircase itself was a work of art, with its ever-changing patterns and colors. It was a truly unique and memorable experience, and a perfect way to end my day of sightseeing.

Before dinner, I decided to check out Concrete Bar, a recommendation from a local I met earlier in the week. Tucked away in a small corridor, this bar was indeed a hidden gem. The ambiance was cozy and intimate, with a unique decor that blended industrial elements with artistic touches. I enjoyed a carefully crafted cocktail while chatting with the friendly bartender, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere. It was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on my journey.

For my final dinner in Kyoto, I chose Yoshikawa, a renowned tempura restaurant. This was a splurge, but I wanted to end my trip on a high note. The restaurant was located in a traditional wooden building, surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. I sat at the counter and watched as the chef expertly prepared each piece of tempura, using the freshest seasonal ingredients. The tempura was light and crispy, and the flavors were delicate and nuanced. Each bite was a culinary revelation, and I savored every moment of the experience. It was a truly unforgettable meal, and a perfect way to say goodbye to Kyoto. I felt a pang of sadness knowing this would be my last night in Kyoto, but also a sense of contentment for all that I had experienced.

As I prepare to leave Kyoto tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had. This solo journey has been a transformative one, allowing me to connect with a new culture and discover new facets of myself. I will carry the memories of Kyoto with me always, and I know that I will return someday to explore even more of its hidden treasures. I am so grateful to Pieter and Sofia for supporting my passion for travel and exploration. While I missed them dearly, this solo journey has rejuvenated my spirit and reminded me of the importance of taking time for myself. I know I will return to Amsterdam a better version of myself, ready to embrace whatever adventures lie ahead. The blend of old and new, the serene temples, and the vibrant city life have created an indelible mark on my soul. I'm already planning my next adventure, but Kyoto will always hold a special place in my heart.

Tomorrow marks the end of my journey, with a flight back to Amsterdam. While I'm eager to see Pieter and Sofia, a part of me will remain in Kyoto, wandering through its temples and gardens. Until next time, Kyoto, arigato!

The Chion-ji Temple Handicraft Market is held every month on the 15th. It is a shame that I only found out about this on my last day and will not be able to visit it. The handicraft market is a great place to pick up unique, locally made souvenirs during your travels to Kyoto.

I also found out about the New Year Dances at the Heian Shrine. It would have been great to attend this traditional event. These traditional dances pay homage to the deities, and I am sure I would have enjoyed the cultural experience.

I am also sad to have missed the Sagicho Festival, held at Sanzen-in Temple, where bonfires light up the winter skies and competing floats have contests of strength. It sounds like a unique and exciting event to witness.

It is also interesting to learn about the archery ritual (Musha Shinji) at Kamigamo Shrine, which is a traditional ceremony held every year on January 16th. This ritual is performed to ward off evil and pray for a good harvest, with the ceremony of shooting arrows at its center.

It seems like I have missed a lot of interesting events, but I am grateful for the experiences I have had. I will definitely come back to Kyoto to explore more of its hidden treasures.

Safe travels and see you on my next adventure!
