Beneath the Surface & Beyond

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took me deep beneath the earth and then soaring above it, all while exploring the heart of Transylvania. It’s amazing how much this region holds, secrets whispered in salt and reflected in serene lake waters. I set out this morning with a sense of anticipation, eager to uncover more of what this land has to offer.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Joseph Haydn house. The reviews I had read were spot on; the goulash was rich and flavorful, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. Fuelled up for the day, I set off towards Praid. I have always enjoyed a good goulash, and this one was one of the best I have had in a long time.

The drive to the Saltmine of Praid was scenic, winding through rolling hills and charming villages. As I approached, I could see the imposing entrance, a stark contrast to the natural beauty surrounding it. This wasn’t just a tourist attraction; it was a living, breathing part of the region’s history and economy. I read recently that the mine was threatened by heavy floods, but thankfully it was open and safe for visitors today. It would be a catastrophe if the mine was destroyed, as it is one of the largest salt reserves in Europe and attracts many tourists each year.

Descending into the Saltmine of Praid was like entering another world. The air was cool and crisp, heavy with the scent of salt. The sheer scale of the place was awe-inspiring, with vast chambers carved out over centuries. What struck me most was the silence, a deep, resonant quiet that amplified the echoes of footsteps and hushed voices. I explored the various galleries, each with its own unique character, from the adventure park to the chapel, all sculpted from salt.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places.

I spent a good few hours wandering through the mine, marveling at the intricate formations and learning about the history of salt extraction in the region. It was fascinating to discover how this seemingly simple mineral has shaped the lives and fortunes of the people here for generations. The mine wasn’t just a place of work; it was a community, a sanctuary, a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. I even saw a medical center, which uses the unique climate of the mine to treat respiratory diseases. It’s incredible how nature can provide such healing benefits.

Emerging from the depths of the saltmine, I felt refreshed and invigorated, ready for the next leg of my journey. I drove towards Sovata, eager to experience the tranquility of Bear Lake. As I arrived, the view was breathtaking. The lake shimmered in the afternoon sun, surrounded by lush green forests and rolling hills. The air was clean and crisp, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers.

I found a spot at Sovata Bear Lakeview Seating and simply soaked in the beauty of the surroundings. The lake is known for its heliothermal properties, with the water temperature increasing with depth. It’s also incredibly salty, thanks to the high concentration of minerals in the surrounding soil. I didn’t go for a swim this time, but I made a mental note to return with my family. Sofia would absolutely love splashing around in the unique waters of Bear Lake.

After a peaceful interlude by the lake, I decided to explore the charming town of Sovata. I strolled along the main street, admiring the colorful houses and quaint shops. I stopped by Elisa Traditional gift shop, where I bought a few souvenirs for Pieter and Sofia. I know they will appreciate the hand-painted ceramics and intricately woven textiles, reminders of my journey back to my roots.

For lunch, I chose Restaurant La Strada in Sighisoara, which was on the way from Sovata to Sighisoara. The reviews were mixed, but I decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was indeed charming, with a rustic setting that fit perfectly within the historic Sighisoara Fortress. I opted for the beef goulash, which was highly recommended. I must say, it lived up to the hype. The service, however, was a bit slow, but the friendly staff made up for it. I am glad I tried it out, and I would recommend the goulash to anyone visiting.

As evening approached, I made my way back to Sighisoara, eager to enjoy a relaxing dinner at Gasthaus Altepost. This restaurant had been recommended by several locals, and I was excited to try their traditional Transylvanian cuisine. The Gasthaus Altepost did not disappoint. The food was hearty and delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance cozy and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

During dinner, I reflected on the day’s adventures, from the depths of the Saltmine of Praid to the serene shores of Sovata’s Bear Lake. It was a day of contrasts, a journey that highlighted the diverse beauty and rich history of Transylvania. I felt grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my roots and to share these experiences with you.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the heart of Sighisoara, exploring the Muzeul De Istorie Sighișoara and wandering through the Culoarul Bătrânelor Doamne. I’m also looking forward to trying out ReFresh, a local bar that has been highly recommended. It’s amazing how much there is to discover in this charming medieval town.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. This solo journey back to my roots has been an incredible experience, a chance to reconnect with my past and to embrace the beauty and wonder of the present. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I look forward to sharing it with you all.

Today was a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in far-flung destinations, but in the hidden corners of our own backyards. And as I continue this journey, I am eager to uncover more of what Transylvania has to offer, one salt mine, one serene lake, and one charming medieval town at a time.

Before heading back to Hotel Central Park, I stopped by the Elisa Traditional gift shop. I wanted to get something truly special to bring back home. The shop was run by a lovely local lady, whose warmth and hospitality made the shopping experience even more special. I ended up buying a beautifully woven textile, its intricate design telling a story of Romanian craftsmanship. I knew Pieter and Sofia would love it, a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of my homeland.
