Day 5: Discovering Indigenous Heritage and Natural Wonders in Iguazu
Explore La Aripuca's eco-conscious designs, Iguazu's biodiversity, and enjoy local flavors for an immersive cultural and natural experience.
A Day of Cultural Immersion and Natural Reflection
Today was a day of delving deeper into the cultural and natural heart of the Iguazu region. From exploring sustainable architectural marvels to understanding the local ecosystem, every moment offered a new perspective. It’s amazing how much you can learn when you step away from the main attractions and immerse yourself in the local environment.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Empório com Arte. This charming spot, recommended by a local I met, was a delightful mix of café and art gallery. As someone who appreciates the blend of creativity and culinary arts, I found myself completely at home. The café itself is set in one of the oldest houses in the city, dating back to 1943 and built in a Polish style. It’s owned by Sergio, who left his career as a pharmacist to follow his dream of opening an art gallery. The walls were adorned with colorful artwork and handicrafts, all available for purchase, making it a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. I opted for a traditional Argentinian breakfast of medialunas (sweet croissants) and a strong café con leche, fueling up for the day’s adventures. Emily would have loved this place, I'll have to remember to bring her here myself one day.
After breakfast, we made our way to La Aripuca. This ecological park is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a statement about environmental consciousness and the beauty of the Paraná rainforest. The centerpiece is a massive structure built from reclaimed native trees, each representing a different species of the region. These trees, some over 30 meters tall and weighing several tons, were rescued from deforestation. The name Aripuca comes from an indigenous word for a trap, symbolizing the dangers facing the rainforest and its inhabitants.
Discover La Aripuca in Puerto Iguazú: A monumental wooden structure promoting sustainability and celebrating Guarani culture and traditions.
As a history enthusiast, I was particularly fascinated by the story behind La Aripuca. The structure is a replica of a traditional Guaraní trap used for catching animals without harming them. The Waidelich family, who own the park, built this giant aripuca to showcase the richness of the Misiones forest. The guide explained how the natives would place food inside the trap, and when an animal entered, it would step on a stick, causing the trap to fall and capture the prey unharmed. This method allowed them to release pregnant females or young offspring, ensuring sustainable hunting.
Walking inside the aripuca was an awe-inspiring experience. The sheer size of the logs, some dating back centuries, was humbling. Each tree was labeled with its name, offering insights into their ecological roles and the threats they face. It was a stark reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage. The craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating this monument were truly remarkable. It's not every day you see something that so effectively combines art, education, and environmentalism. It reminded me of some of the historical reenactments I've been a part of, where we try to bring history to life in an engaging and informative way.
The Earth is what we all have in common.
Next on our itinerary was the Iguazu National Park Nature Interpretation Center. This center serves as a gateway to understanding the park's biodiversity and environmental significance. Known as Yvyrá Retá, which means The land of the trees in the Guarani native language, the center aims to educate visitors about the region's history, climate, geology, and endangered species.

The center is designed to be accessible, with wheelchair-friendly trails. Inside, the exhibits are divided into two main sections: one focusing on biological diversity and the other on the relationship between humans and the jungle. I found the displays on the local wildlife particularly interesting, with sculptures of different animals made from plaster and resin adding an engaging touch. The center also highlights the conservation challenges and the work of the National Park in raising community consciousness. It’s a perfect starting point for anyone wanting to explore the park with a deeper understanding of its ecological context. It was fascinating to learn about the unique ecosystem of the Paranaense subtropical rainforest, which the park helps to protect.
After a morning of exploration and education, hunger struck again. We headed to Restaurante La Rueda for lunch. This culinary landmark has been serving locals and tourists since 1975. The restaurant's name comes from a wagon wheel given to the Bauza family, the founders, when they arrived in the region. The architecture reflects its history, with a rustic design featuring a tacuara ceiling, brick floors, and murals by Hans Hachen depicting Guarani mythology.

La Rueda is known for its fusion of Argentine and Italian cuisine, with a focus on regional ingredients. I decided to try one of their signature dishes: river fish, specifically surubí, prepared with local flavors. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, perfectly complemented by a glass of Argentine wine recommended by the sommelier. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with live music adding to the charm. It was easy to see why this restaurant has been a favorite for so many years. I made a mental note to bring Emily here as well; she would adore the blend of rustic charm and gourmet cuisine.
Our final stop of the day was the Duty Free Shop Puerto Iguazu. Located near the border between Argentina and Brazil, this massive shopping center offers a wide range of products at reduced prices. From electronics and perfumes to clothing and souvenirs, it’s a shopper’s paradise.

As someone who doesn’t usually indulge in retail therapy, I was initially skeptical. However, I must admit that the sheer variety of goods was impressive. I ended up picking up a few gifts for Oliver, including a mini Arsenal jersey (of course!). I also grabbed a bottle of Argentine Malbec for Emily and myself to enjoy back at the campsite. While it’s important to compare prices to ensure you’re getting a good deal, the Duty Free Shop is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. I even saw a replica of London's Tower Bridge inside the shop ! It almost felt like a little piece of home amidst the Argentinian landscape.
For dinner, we decided to try Naipi restaurant. Nestled in Puerto Iguazú, Naipi stands out as a premier dining destination that offers a delightful culinary experience. Known for its rich flavors and innovative dishes, this restaurant captures the essence of Argentine cuisine with a modern twist. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making it an ideal spot for both families and couples looking to enjoy a memorable meal after exploring the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding area. The open-air design allowed us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Puerto Iguazú while enjoying our meals under the stars. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and natural reflection.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we had. From the ecological insights at La Aripuca to the culinary delights at La Rueda and Naipi, every moment was a testament to the richness and diversity of this region. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to learn, to explore, and to connect with the world around me. And of course, to find those little pieces of home, even in the most unexpected places.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Visitor Center Station and Reserva Selva Iryapú [see itinerary of tomorrow]. I’m particularly excited about exploring the Iryapú Forest, a protected natural reserve that offers a glimpse into the region's indigenous culture and biodiversity. It’s another opportunity to delve deeper into the heart of this incredible place. And perhaps we'll end the day with a well-deserved pint at Cerveza Patagonia - Refugio Iguazú [see itinerary of tomorrow].
