Drenched in Wonder

Day four at Iguazu was all about embracing the raw, untamed power of nature. Today, we plunged into the heart of the falls, experiencing them in ways I never thought possible. It was a day of exhilarating adventure, stunning views, and a whole lot of water. Prepare to get soaked, both literally and metaphorically, in the beauty and force of Iguazu!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Costanera Puerto Iguazú. Fuelling up with some local pastries and strong coffee was essential for the adventures that lay ahead. With the sun shining, we were all buzzing with anticipation. I must admit, I was a bit more excited than the others, Emily always says I act like a kid on Christmas morning when I'm about to see something impressive, and she wasn't wrong!

First up was the Macuco Safari. This wasn't just a gentle boat ride; it was a full-on assault by nature. Before we even got to the boats, we were whisked away in open-top electric vehicles through the jungle. Our guide was fantastic, pointing out various flora and fauna, and sharing interesting facts about the rainforest. It was like a mini-expedition, and I felt like a proper explorer, a bit like I do when I'm giving tours back in Halifax!

After the jungle ride, we hiked a short trail down to the river. The anticipation was building with every step as we could hear the roar of the falls getting louder and louder. Finally, we reached the boats, and I could see the mixture of excitement and trepidation on everyone's faces. We donned our life jackets, stowed our bags in waterproof sacks, and off we went!

The boat sped towards the base of the falls, and it wasn't long before we were getting sprayed. At first, it was a refreshing mist, but as we got closer, it turned into a torrential downpour. The adrenaline was pumping as we navigated the rapids, the boat bucking and weaving through the water. And then, we were right underneath the falls! The power of the water was incredible, crashing down all around us. I could barely see a thing, but I was laughing and whooping with pure joy. It was an absolute drenching, but it was the most exhilarating experience. I felt utterly alive, connected to the raw energy of the natural world. I made sure my Arsenal cap was tucked safely away; wouldn't want to lose it to the falls!

Once the safari was over, we headed for lunch at Green Mandioca. This place was a welcome oasis after our aquatic adventure. The restaurant had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and the food was fantastic. I opted for a traditional Argentinian steak, which was cooked to perfection. The others enjoyed a variety of local dishes, and we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we'd had so far. It was great to refuel and recharge before our next adventure.

The Devil's Throat isn't just a waterfall; it's an experience that shakes you to your core and leaves you in awe of nature's power.

Next on the agenda was Garganta del Diablo, the Devil's Throat. We hopped on the Ecological Train, a charming little gas-powered train that took us through the rainforest to the start of the Devil's Throat trail. The train ride itself was lovely, offering glimpses of the surrounding jungle and a chance to relax after our earlier excitement.

The trail to the Devil's Throat is a metal walkway that extends over the river. As we walked, the roar of the falls grew louder and louder, until it was almost deafening. The anticipation was palpable, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. Finally, we reached the platform at the edge of the Devil's Throat, and I was completely blown away.

The sheer scale and power of the falls is hard to describe. Water thundered down into the abyss, creating a cloud of mist that rose hundreds of feet into the air. The spray soaked us instantly, but I barely noticed. I was mesmerized by the spectacle before me. It was like standing on the edge of the world, witnessing the full force of nature unleashed. I tried to imagine what Eleanor Roosevelt must have felt when she saw this, apparently she said 'Poor Niagra'. I could see what she meant.

We spent ages on that platform, just soaking it all in (literally!). It was an experience that touched something deep inside me, a reminder of the incredible power and beauty of our planet. I felt so privileged to be there, to witness such a magnificent sight. Emily grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze, she knew exactly what I was feeling.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Puerto Iguazu. We had dinner booked at Jungle Restaurante. After such an adventurous day, we were all starving, and the restaurant didn't disappoint. The setting was beautiful, nestled amongst the trees, and the food was delicious. I had some grilled fish, which was cooked to perfection. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

After dinner, and feeling quite tired, most of the group decided to call it a night. However, never one to turn down the opportunity to experience the local nightlife, I decided to check out Casanova Night Club. It was a lively spot, with a good mix of locals and tourists. The music was a blend of Latin rhythms and international hits, and the dance floor was packed. I even managed to pick up a few new dance moves, although I'm not sure Emily would approve!

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit La Aripuca and the Iguazu National Park Nature Interpretation Center. I'm looking forward to learning more about the local culture and the natural history of the area. But for now, it's time to rest my weary legs and dream of waterfalls. What a day! I'm off to get that portable phone charger I forgot, don't want to miss out on capturing tomorrow's memories!

And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
