Family Adventure Through the Eternal City: Rome
Day 10: Unearthing Ancient Secrets and Rooftop Revelations: A Day of Discovery in Rome
Explore Rome's hidden depths at Basilica di San Clemente, admire art at Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace, and dine atop Ambrosia's rooftop.
Beneath the Surface, Above the Skyline
Today marked the penultimate day of our Roman holiday, and I wanted to make it count. It was a day of contrasts, delving into the city's ancient foundations and then soaring above it all for a final, celebratory meal. Rome, as ever, delivered a day of unforgettable experiences.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Crispi 19. Emily opted for a simple pastry and coffee, while Oliver, predictably, chose the chocolate croissant. I went for a more traditional Roman breakfast of cornetto and cappuccino. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Basilica of San Clemente.
Explore the Basilica of San Clemente, a historical jewel in Rome featuring stunning mosaics and a fascinating multi-layered history.
The Basilica of San Clemente is, without exaggeration, one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever visited. From the outside, it appears as any other beautiful Roman church, but beneath the surface lies a multi-layered historical treasure. As a history enthusiast, I was eager to explore its depths. The basilica is built upon a 4th-century church, which itself was built upon a 1st-century Roman house and a temple dedicated to Mithras.
Descending into the basilica is like stepping back in time. The visible church is stunning with its 12th-century mosaics. We then ventured into the 4th-century church below, where the air grew cooler and the silence more profound. The frescoes on the walls were remarkably preserved, depicting scenes from the lives of saints and early Christian history. Oliver was surprisingly captivated, his eyes wide as he pointed out the various figures and stories. I found myself explaining the significance of each scene, relishing the opportunity to share my passion with him.
But the real adventure began when we descended even further, into the 1st-century Roman house and Mithraic temple. Here, the atmosphere was palpably different – ancient and mysterious. We walked through narrow passageways, the original Roman brickwork still visible, and explored the remains of the temple, where the cult of Mithras was once practiced. It was an eerie, yet fascinating experience, imagining the rituals that once took place in this very spot.
To walk through the Basilica of San Clemente is to walk through the very layers of history, each level whispering tales of a different era.
Emerging from the depths of San Clemente, blinking in the sunlight, we made our way to the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace.
Explore the serene Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace, where art, history, and spirituality converge in the heart of Rome.
Tucked away in a small piazza near Piazza Navona, this church is a hidden gem of Renaissance and Baroque art. Its unassuming exterior belies the artistic treasures within.
The church was built in the late 15th century, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to commemorate the peace between the Papal States, Venice, and the Kingdom of Naples. The design was entrusted to Baccio Pontelli, with later additions by Bramante and Pietro da Cortona. As we entered, the tranquil atmosphere was a welcome contrast to the bustling streets outside.
One of the highlights of Santa Maria della Pace is the Chigi Chapel, designed by Raphael. The chapel is a masterpiece of Renaissance art, adorned with frescoes depicting sibyls and angels. I pointed out the intricate details to Emily, who was particularly impressed by the harmony and balance of the composition. Oliver, however, was more interested in the dome, craning his neck to take in the full view. The church also features works by other notable artists, including Baldassarre Peruzzi and Orazio Gentileschi.
After soaking in the artistic splendor of Santa Maria della Pace, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Life Ristorante.

A place recommended for its fresh, high-quality ingredients. The restaurant was conveniently located, and we were quickly seated. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive.
I decided to try their famous black truffle tasting menu, while Emily opted for the lobster tasting menu. Oliver, as usual, wanted pasta with tomato sauce. The food was indeed excellent, each dish bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. My truffle ravioli was divine, the earthy aroma filling my senses with each bite. Emily raved about her lobster tagliolini, declaring it the best pasta she’d had on the trip. Even Oliver, usually a picky eater, devoured his pasta with gusto. The quality of the ingredients was evident, and the care taken in the preparation was clear.
As the afternoon drew to a close, we took a brief respite at the 939 Hotel.

Allowing Oliver to recharge before our evening plans. It also gave Emily and I the opportunity to reflect on the day's explorations. The contrast between the ancient depths of the Basilica of San Clemente and the artistic heights of Santa Maria della Pace was striking, showcasing the many layers of Rome's rich history and culture.
For our final dinner in Rome, I wanted something special. I had booked a table at Ambrosia Rooftop Restaurant & Bar.

Drawn in by the promise of stunning views and exceptional cuisine. As we arrived, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the city. The rooftop terrace was beautifully decorated with plants and elegant furniture, creating a romantic and inviting atmosphere.
We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our table, which offered a breathtaking panorama of Rome. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vittoriano were all visible in the distance, bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. Oliver was thrilled, pointing out the various landmarks with excitement.
The menu at Ambrosia was a delightful mix of Italian classics and creative innovations. I started with the octopus carpaccio, while Emily chose the pumpkin soufflé. For our main courses, I opted for the ravioli, and Emily selected the gnocchi. Oliver, of course, stuck with pasta, but this time he chose a creamy carbonara. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art. My octopus carpaccio was delicate and flavorful, while Emily’s soufflé was light and airy. The ravioli was perfectly cooked and the sauce was rich and decadent. Emily loved her gnocchi, which were pillowy soft and served with a delicious pesto sauce.
As we savored our meal, we watched as the city transformed from day to night, the lights twinkling on one by one. The atmosphere was magical, the perfect ending to our Roman holiday. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly, making us feel truly welcome.
After dinner, I decided to round off the evening with a visit to Almalu Trastevere.
Experience the vibrant nightlife at Almalu Trastevere, where innovative cocktails and a lively atmosphere await you in Rome's charming Trastevere district.
A bar known for its lively atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails. Emily, however, decided to retire to the hotel with Oliver, who was starting to feel the effects of a long day. I promised to join them shortly, eager to experience a taste of Rome’s nightlife.
Almalu Trastevere was indeed buzzing with energy. The bar was packed with locals and tourists, all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. I ordered a Negroni, my favorite Italian cocktail, and soaked in the scene. The mixologists were skilled and passionate, creating innovative drinks with flair. The music was upbeat, and the conversation flowed easily. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery, a final toast to the Eternal City.
As I walked back to the hotel, the streets of Rome were quiet and peaceful. I reflected on our incredible journey, the memories we had made, and the experiences we had shared. Rome had truly captured our hearts, and I knew we would be back again someday.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Roman adventure. We plan to visit the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle. We'll have breakfast at Sa Tanca Crostaceria, lunch at Taverna del Seminario, and a farewell dinner at Il Gabriello. Before heading to the airport, we will also try to squeeze in some shopping at Via del Corso. It will be a bittersweet day, filled with both excitement and sadness as we bid farewell to this magnificent city. But for now, I am content, grateful for the memories we have created and the experiences we have shared. Ciao, Roma!
