A Day of Reflection and Rock 'n' Roll

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of the serene and the energetic that only a place like Kanazawa could offer. It was a day for contemplation, historical appreciation, and, unexpectedly, some good old rock 'n' roll. I find myself constantly surprised by the hidden gems this city reveals, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you all.

My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kifune. I managed to snag a reservation, which I hear is quite the feat. Nestled in a Taisho-era building, the restaurant exuded an old-world charm that immediately set a peaceful tone for the day. The Kaga Kaiseki cuisine was exquisite, a multi-course culinary journey that highlighted the region's seasonal ingredients. The rice bowl with dried sea bream was a particular standout, its simple yet profound flavors awakening my senses. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring the depths of Kanazawa's cultural offerings.

With a satisfied stomach and a clear mind, I made my way to the D.T. Suzuki Museum. As someone who enjoys a bit of contemplation, this museum dedicated to the life and philosophy of the renowned Buddhist scholar D.T. Suzuki was high on my list. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi with clean, simple lines that encourage introspection. The Water Mirror Garden, a shallow reflecting pool, was particularly captivating, mirroring the sky and surrounding trees, creating a sense of serene infinity.

Wandering through the exhibits, I learned about Suzuki's efforts to popularize Zen Buddhism in the West, his writings, and his impact on countless individuals. I found myself drawn to his perspective on life, his emphasis on simplicity, and his belief in the power of self-reflection. It was a welcome change of pace from the often-frenetic energy of modern life. As a reenactor, I often find myself pondering the past, but Suzuki's teachings encouraged me to also reflect on the present and future.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.

Leaving the museum, I felt a sense of renewed calm and clarity. It was a reminder to approach life with openness and curiosity, much like a football match – you never know what twists and turns await. With this newfound perspective, I set off to my next destination: Oyama Shrine.

Oyama Shrine is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga Domain, and his wife, Omatsu. The shrine was originally established in 1599 but moved to its current location in 1873. What struck me most about Oyama Shrine was its unique main gate, a fascinating blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural styles. Designed with the help of a Dutch architect, the gate features stained glass windows and what is said to be Japan's oldest lightning rod. It’s a testament to Kanazawa's history as a city open to new ideas and influences.

As I wandered through the shrine grounds, I admired the strolling garden with its ponds and bridges, designed to resemble harps and lutes. I also made sure to find the statue of Maeda Toshiie and the rock depicting his wife, Omatsu, known for her intelligence and diplomatic skills. It was a fitting tribute to a couple who played such a significant role in Kanazawa's history.

After a day of cultural immersion, it was time for lunch. I headed to Teppanyaki makibi san-an for a teppanyaki experience. The aromas wafting from the grill were irresistible, and I eagerly anticipated the culinary delights to come. I opted for one of the set menus and was not disappointed. The chef skillfully prepared each dish right before my eyes, using fresh, local ingredients. The perfectly cooked lobster, filet mignon, and seasonal vegetables were a symphony of flavors. The attentive service and engaging atmosphere made it a truly memorable dining experience.

With my appetite sated, I decided to explore Kanazawa's nightlife. I'd heard good things about the Kanazawa Music Bar, a spot known for its curated vinyl collection and craft cocktails. As someone who appreciates good music, I was intrigued.

The Kanazawa Music Bar was exactly what I needed after a day of quiet contemplation. The bar was dimly lit, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The walls were lined with vinyl records, a testament to the bar's dedication to music. I ordered an original cocktail made with local ingredients and settled in to enjoy the music. The music selector played a mix of classic rock, blues, and soul, creating a vibrant and energetic vibe. It was the perfect way to unwind and let loose after a day of exploring Kanazawa's cultural treasures.

It turned out that tonight was a special night at the Kanazawa Music Bar. A local band was playing a set of classic rock covers. As a Brit, I couldn’t help but feel at home as they belted out hits from The Rolling Stones and The Who. Before I knew it, I was chatting with locals and fellow travelers, all united by our love of music. It was a reminder that even when traveling solo, you can always find connection and community.

As the night drew to a close, I made my way back to the Henn na Hotel Kanazawa Korinbo, my head filled with the sounds of rock 'n' roll and my heart full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. It was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of the serene and the energetic that only a place like Kanazawa could offer. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Kanazawa's history by visiting the Geisha House Shima and the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum. I'm also looking forward to exploring Kanazawa Loft, a shop I've heard is a treasure trove of unique finds. And of course, I'll be sure to sample more of Kanazawa's culinary delights, with breakfast at Umi & Tsuchi, lunch at Gyohan, and dinner at Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme.

But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Until tomorrow, Kanazawa!

P.S. I almost forgot! Today is November 23rd, and I found out that the Kanazawa Cosplay Festival is happening. I didn't have time to check it out, but I heard it's a fun event for anime and manga fans. Maybe next year I'll come in costume.
