Discover Kanazawa's serene onsen, vibrant parks, and exquisite cuisine. A day of relaxation, exploration, and gastronomic adventures.
Seeking Serenity in Kanazawa
Today was a welcome change of pace, a day dedicated to unwinding and soaking in the more tranquil aspects of Kanazawa. After several days of bustling markets and historical explorations, I felt a deep need to reconnect with nature and indulge in some self-care. It turned out to be a day filled with soothing hot springs, picturesque gardens, and some truly memorable meals.
My day began, as it often does here, with a strong coffee at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. This spot has quickly become my go-to for a caffeine fix and a bit of familiar comfort. The Americano was spot-on, and the vintage décor always manages to put a smile on my face. It's a little slice of Seattle in the heart of Kanazawa, run by a charming couple, Sol and Yuko.

With a pep in my step, I set off for Yamanaka Onsen. The journey there was scenic in itself, a pleasant bus ride through the countryside. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Yamanaka Onsen is one of the four hot spring towns that make up Kaga Onsen. The town’s hot springs were discovered over 1300 years ago and lauded by the poet Basho as one of Japan's three best hot springs.

Yamanaka Onsen: A Soothing Escape
The onsen town itself is nestled along the Kakusenkei Gorge, a stunning natural feature known for its scenic beauty. There’s a trail that runs along the gorge, and the town is dotted with traditional inns and modern hotels. I opted for a soak at one of the local bathhouses. Stepping into the steaming water, I felt my muscles instantly relax. There's something incredibly therapeutic about the mineral-rich waters and the serene atmosphere. I spent a good hour alternating between the hot bath and the cool air, letting the stress of the past few weeks melt away.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Afterward, feeling utterly refreshed, I wandered through the town, admiring the traditional architecture and the quaint shops selling local crafts. Yamanaka is known for Yamanaka Lacquerware, characterized by fine designs engraved by hand. I picked up a small, beautifully crafted bowl as a memento of my visit. It'll be a lovely reminder of this tranquil escape.
A Park and a Garden
Next on the agenda was Utatsuyama Park Hanashoubuen. I wanted to experience some of Kanazawa’s natural beauty beyond the onsen. This park, located on Utatsuyama mountain, promised panoramic views of the city and the Sea of Japan. It’s also known for its seasonal flowers.

The hike to the observation deck was invigorating, a pleasant climb through wooded trails. Along the way, I passed several small temples, each with its own unique charm. Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a breathtaking vista. The city spread out below me, a patchwork of rooftops and winding streets, with the Sea of Japan shimmering in the distance. I could even spot the faint outline of Noto Peninsula on the horizon. Though I was visiting out of season for the irises, the park was still beautiful.
Yakitori and Curry
By this point, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way back into the city center for lunch at Bird Yakitori. This restaurant came highly recommended, and I was eager to try their charcoal-grilled chicken skewers. The restaurant itself is stylish and classy, with a chic white interior and a relaxing atmosphere. I opted for the chef’s selection, a course of eight skewers featuring different cuts of chicken, each cooked to perfection. The meat was incredibly juicy, and the skin was delightfully crispy. It was, without a doubt, some of the best yakitori I’ve ever had.

For dinner, I decided to venture into the world of Indian cuisine at Aashirwad. I’ve been craving something spicy, and this restaurant seemed like the perfect place to satisfy that craving. It’s known for authentic Indian cuisine, prepared by chefs from North India. The staff are friendly and can speak English well. I started with samosas, followed by chana masala. The flavors were rich and complex, and the spice level was just right. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a perfect end to a day of relaxation and exploration.

Nightcap
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out FREE SPACE, a bar I had read about. It’s located on the fourth floor of a building and is known for its friendly staff and karaoke. I enjoyed a couple of whisky colas, chatted with the locals, and even belted out a few karaoke tunes. It was a fun and lively atmosphere, a great way to unwind and experience a different side of Kanazawa’s nightlife.

As I walked back to the hotel, the city was quiet and peaceful. The day had been a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and culinary delights. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck and Kanazawa Castle. It will be another day of delving into Kanazawa's history and culture.
I am still missing a Japanese phrasebook, and a portable charger. I will try to find one tomorrow at Hakuichi Kanazawa Hyakubangai Store, before my planned visits.
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller”. This trip to Kanazawa is certainly giving me plenty to talk about. I’m already looking forward to sharing more stories from this captivating city.
