From Mini Bungles to Fiery Skies

Today was a day of contrasts, from exploring ancient rock formations that echo the grandeur of the Bungle Bungle Range to witnessing a sunset that painted the sky in hues I've only dreamed of. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my comfortable Heidelberg apartment for a tent in the Australian outback – the sheer, unadulterated beauty of nature is a balm for the soul.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. I savored the last of my coffee, a little nervous about what the day would hold. Thomas always teases me about my meticulous planning, but honestly, it's the only way I can truly relax and enjoy the experience. After breakfast, we packed up our gear and set off to explore Mirima National Park.

Mirima, often called the 'Mini Bungle Bungles,' is just a short drive from Kununurra. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a series of striking sandstone formations, reminiscent of its larger cousin but with its own unique charm. The park is incredibly significant to the local Miriuwung people, and you can feel the history in the air. The brochure at the park entrance says these rocks are over 350 million years old, which is mind-boggling. Leela would have loved climbing around here.

We decided to take the Derdbe-Gerring Banan Trail, a short but rewarding walk that climbs to a lookout with views over Kununurra. The trail was easy enough, even in the December heat, and the rock formations kept us captivated. The sunlight played across the layered sandstone, creating a mesmerizing display of colors. I tried to capture it all with my camera, but some things just can't be translated into pixels.

I was so glad that I had remembered to bring sunscreen, as the Australian sun can be brutal, even in the late afternoon. I did, however, forget the insect repellent! Luckily, my friend had some to share.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones you least expect.

After a couple of hours exploring Mirima Rock Formations, we were ready for some lunch.

We headed back towards the Bungle Bungle Range and grabbed a quick bite at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The lodge was a welcome oasis of calm, and we enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal before continuing our adventure.

Our afternoon was dedicated to Kungkalanayi Lookout, a spot I'd been eagerly anticipating since I first planned this trip. Located a short drive from the visitor center, the lookout promised panoramic views of the Bungle Bungle Range's western face. As we drove, the anticipation built, and I could feel the familiar thrill of discovery bubbling inside me.

The walk to the lookout from the car park was an easy 500 meters. As we reached the top, I was struck by the sheer scale of the landscape. The Bungle Bungle Range stretched out before us, a tapestry of orange and black beehive domes against a backdrop of spinifex-covered ridges. The views were already incredible, but we knew the real magic was yet to come.

We found a comfortable spot to sit and waited for the sun to begin its descent. As the afternoon wore on, the colors of the landscape began to shift. The orange stripes of the domes deepened, and the sky transformed into a canvas of fiery hues. Reds, oranges, and pinks blazed across the horizon, casting a warm glow over everything. It was one of those moments that makes you feel incredibly small yet connected to something vast and ancient.

I thought about Thomas and Leela back in Heidelberg. I miss them terribly, of course, but I know that this experience will enrich my life in ways I can't yet imagine. I'll bring back stories and memories to share, and maybe, just maybe, I'll inspire them to embark on their own adventures.

As darkness fell, we made our way back to the car, our hearts full of the day's experiences. We had dinner at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, enjoying a communal meal under the stars. The air was filled with laughter and stories as fellow travelers shared their own adventures. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. They even offer pet sitting, which would be great if we had brought Heidi!

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Mirima National Park and Kelly's Knob. I'm particularly excited about Kelly's Knob, as I've heard it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I'm sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery. Perhaps I will buy some insect repellent at the Bungle Bungle Guided Tours | Kimberley Air and Walking Tours. I will also need binoculars!

For now, though, I'm content to sit by the campfire, listening to the sounds of the outback and reflecting on the incredible beauty of the Bungle Bungle Range. It's a privilege to be here, and I'm grateful for every moment.

I am exhausted after a long day of exploring, but I am happy to be able to share my experiences with you. Good night from the Bungle Bungles!
