Adventurous Journey to the Bungle Bungle Range

A View From Above

Today was nothing short of spectacular. Imagine trading the familiar Heidelberg skyline for the ancient, breathtaking panorama of the Bungle Bungle Range. It's hard to believe it's only Day 4 of our adventure, as it feels like we've already lived a lifetime of unforgettable experiences. After several days of exploring on foot, Thomas, the kids and I decided to experience Purnululu National Park from a different perspective – from the air!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the anticipation of the day ahead. Fuelled and ready, we made our way to the HeliSpirit Bungle Bungle | Scenic Helicopter Flights. The excitement was palpable as we prepared for our scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range. It was a clear, sunny morning – perfect for capturing the full majesty of this natural wonder.

As we lifted off, the landscape transformed beneath us. The towering, striped sandstone domes, carved by millions of years of wind and rain, spread out like an enormous piece of indigenous artwork as someone mentioned. The sheer scale of the Bungle Bungle Range is truly something to behold. From above, we could trace the intricate network of gorges and waterways, hidden valleys, and the unique formations that make this place so special. I couldn't help but think about Leela and how she would love this. She is so fascinated by geography at the moment, and I know she would be in awe of this landscape.

Sometimes, the best way to understand the grandeur of nature is to witness it from above.

The flight took us over Piccaninny Gorge, where we spotted tiny figures of hikers making their way through the trails. It gave us a sense of perspective, reminding us of the vastness of the Kimberley and the Bungle Bungle Range. We also flew over Cathedral Gorge, its cavernous interior hidden from view at ground level, now revealed in all its glory. The pilot shared stories of the region's history and geology, adding depth to the already awe-inspiring views. Thomas, ever the physics enthusiast, peppered the pilot with questions about the geological processes that formed these incredible structures.

After our exhilarating flight, we landed back at Bellburn Airstrip, buzzing with excitement. We made our way to the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park for a well-deserved lunch. The eco-accommodation was a welcome sight, and we enjoyed a delicious meal while recounting our favourite moments from the air. The lodge was lovely and I noticed that they had a great outdoor bar area overlooking the creek, which seemed like a fantastic spot for a cool drink.

As the afternoon progressed, we decided to relax and unwind, soaking in the serene atmosphere of the Bungle Bungle. Some of our group took a refreshing dip in the pool at the lodge, while others simply lounged around, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. I took the time to jot down some notes, wanting to capture every detail of the day before it faded from memory.

In the evening, we gathered at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge for dinner. The lodge offered a delightful setting, and we enjoyed a delicious meal, sharing stories and laughter around the table. The food was exceptional, with a focus on local specialties and fresh ingredients. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and wonder.

Before heading back to our camp, we stopped by the bar at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park for a nightcap. We sat by the outdoor fireplace, enjoying the warmth and camaraderie. The stars above shone with an intensity I rarely see in Heidelberg, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the Australian outback.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Kungkalanayi Lookout and Mirima Rock Formations. I’m excited to see what new perspectives and adventures await us as we continue our journey through this extraordinary landscape.

Thinking back on today, I’m reminded of how important it is to embrace new experiences and see the world from different angles. Whether it's soaring above the Bungle Bungle Range or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty around us, there's always something new to discover. And I am so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends.

The Bungle Bungles are an assault on your senses, and I mean that in the best possible way. The colours, the textures, the sheer scale of everything – it’s an experience that will stay with me forever. And to think, this is only the beginning of our Kimberley adventure!

As I sit here, writing this blog post under the vast, starlit sky, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Each day brings new adventures, new perspectives, and new memories to cherish. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. Maybe I should have packed insect repellent and binoculars though!
