Adventurous Journey to the Bungle Bungle Range
Day 8: A Step Back in Time and a River Crossing: Kununurra's Charms
Exploring Kununurra: From the historic Argyle Homestead Museum to the thrilling Ivanhoe Crossing, a day of Kimberley adventures.
Kununurra's Unexpected Delights
Today was a day of unexpected discoveries and a delightful step back in time. Leaving the Bungle Bungle Range behind for a day, we ventured out to explore some of the historical and natural landmarks closer to Kununurra. It's amazing how much this region has to offer beyond the iconic beehive domes. From delving into the past at the Argyle Homestead Museum, to experiencing the thrill of crossing a river, today was a beautiful reminder of why I love to travel and share these experiences with my readers.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. The lodge is fantastic, and the kitchen team is especially accommodating, catering to all sorts of dietary needs. After a satisfying meal, we set off towards Kununurra, eager to explore what the day had in store.
Our first stop was Ivanhoe Crossing, a concrete causeway over the Ord River. The drive there was scenic, with the vast Kimberley landscape unfolding before us. I had read about Ivanhoe Crossing, but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely. This crossing, originally built in the 1930s and improved in the 1950s, was once part of the main road between Kununurra and Wyndham. Nowadays, with the Ord River Irrigation Project making the river flow year-round, it's often impassable during the wet season.

As we approached, the sight of the water flowing over the causeway was both exciting and a little daunting. I remember Stacey's words about her fears of river crossings, especially with the thought of crocodiles lurking beneath the surface. Luckily, the crossing was open, but only to 4WD vehicles, which we had. Before attempting the crossing, we stopped to watch a few other cars go through, gauging the water level and current. The adrenaline was definitely pumping as we slowly drove onto the causeway. The water splashed against the car, and for a moment, I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a tiny bit of apprehension.
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that push you slightly outside your comfort zone.
It was exhilarating! We made it across without a hitch, and the sense of accomplishment was palpable. Thomas, always the cautious one, was relieved, and I couldn't help but laugh at the sheer joy of it all. We parked on the other side and took some photos, capturing the moment and the stunning scenery. Of course, we kept a close eye out for any estuarine crocodiles that might be tempted to join us. I made sure to remind my friends about the warning signs, just in case anyone was tempted to dip their toes in the water!
After our thrilling river crossing, we continued our journey to the Argyle Homestead Museum, located about 70 kilometers south of Kununurra near Lake Argyle. The drive itself was beautiful, offering panoramic views of the Kimberley landscape. As we approached the museum, I was immediately struck by the homestead's serene setting and historical charm.

The Argyle Homestead Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Durack family, who were among the first European pastoralists in the Kimberley. The original homestead was built in 1895 by the Durack family. However, with the construction of Lake Argyle in 1971, the decision was made to relocate the homestead to its present location to preserve it. The homestead was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in 1979, a testament to the dedication to preserving this piece of history.
Walking through the rooms, I felt transported back to the late 19th century. The museum is set up as an 1890s home, complete with furniture, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of the Durack family's epic journey from Queensland to the Kimberley with 2,000 head of cattle. It was incredible to learn about their hardships and triumphs in establishing a successful cattle station in such a remote and challenging environment. The museum also highlights the story of Operation Noah, the animal rescue effort that took place during the flooding of the original homestead site.
The museum's shady verandahs and cool interiors provided a welcome respite from the Kimberley heat. We spent a couple of hours exploring the homestead, reading the exhibits, and imagining what life must have been like for the Durack family. I was particularly moved by the displays showcasing the family's personal belongings, which offered a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the history. The museum also has a collection of original objects, photographs and period objects that interpret life on a remote pastoral lease in the 1890s.
After immersing ourselves in history, we relaxed in the museum's gardens, enjoying a cold drink and reflecting on the Durack family's legacy. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and it was lovely to see so much bird and wildlife around the grounds. Before leaving, I picked up a few souvenirs from the museum shop, including a book about the Durack family and a stubby cooler to remind me of our visit.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back towards the Bungle Bungle Range. For dinner, we headed to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. We enjoyed a hearty meal and shared stories with fellow travelers around the campfire. The Caravan Park offers a communal dining experience, with a barbeque buffet of locally sourced beef, barramundi, salads and desserts. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, adventure, and the unique charm of the Kimberley.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep appreciation for the diverse experiences this region offers. From the adrenaline rush of Ivanhoe Crossing to the historical insights at the Argyle Homestead Museum, it was a day that truly captured the spirit of the Kimberley. As someone who loves to blend cultural immersion with a bit of adventure, I found today's itinerary to be the perfect balance.
Tomorrow, we're off to explore Zebedee Springs and El Questro Wilderness Park. I've heard so much about the natural beauty of Zebedee Springs, and I'm excited to experience it firsthand. El Questro Wilderness Park promises even more adventure, and I'm eager to see what it has in store for us. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. Until then, goodnight from the Kimberley!
I am also reminded of the Kununurra Christmas Markets which will be held at the end of November. I wish I could extend my trip to attend the markets.
