Day 9: A Morning of Thermal Bliss and Wilderness Wonder in El Questro
Discover the magic of Zebedee Springs and the vastness of El Questro Wilderness Park on Day 9 of our Bungle Bungle adventure.
Oasis Found
Another day, another adventure in the Kimberley! Today, Day 9 of our Bungle Bungle escapade, was all about embracing the natural beauty and serenity of El Questro Wilderness Park. After a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, we set off early, eager to explore what the day had in store for us. The anticipation was palpable, especially knowing Zebedee Springs was our first stop.

The drive to El Questro was stunning. The landscape transformed into a rugged, vast expanse, painting a picture of the Kimberley's raw beauty. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to witness such untouched landscapes, a far cry from my usual city life in Heidelberg. Thomas would have loved this, he always appreciates the raw nature away from our comfortable city.
We arrived at Zebedee Springs bright and early. I had read that arriving early is key to avoid the crowds, and it was definitely worth the early wake-up call. The walk to the springs was a short, easy stroll through a forest of Livistona and Pandanus palms. The temperature was already climbing, typical for December in this region, with average highs around 38°C. The humidity was noticeable, making the thermal springs even more inviting.
Stepping into the warm, mineral-rich waters of Zebedee Springs was like entering another world. The springs are a series of natural thermal rock pools nestled at the base of a sheer cliff. The water temperature hovered around a comfortable 28-32°C, perfect for a relaxing soak. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the palms, it felt like a true oasis in the middle of the arid landscape.
The magic of Zebedee Springs lies not only in its therapeutic waters but also in the serene, almost prehistoric atmosphere it exudes.
I spent a good hour simply soaking in the springs, letting the warm water ease my muscles and clear my mind. It was incredibly peaceful, a perfect way to start the day. Even with a few other people around, the atmosphere remained tranquil, a testament to the special energy of this place.
After our rejuvenating soak, we headed towards the El Questro Wilderness Park - Kununurra Office. The park itself is immense, spanning nearly one million acres! As we drove, the sheer scale of the wilderness became apparent, a humbling reminder of nature's grandeur.

At the Kununurra office, we gathered information about the park, its various attractions, and the best ways to explore it. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing maps and tips for our visit. We learned about the various gorges, including Emma Gorge and El Questro Gorge, and the different activities available, from hiking and horseback riding to barramundi fishing. I made a mental note to come back and explore these further.
Before leaving El Questro Wilderness Park - Kununurra Office, I took a look at the small shop they have there. I was hoping to find some insect repellent, as I had forgotten to pack it. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock, so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Lunch was a casual affair at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. We enjoyed simple sandwiches and refreshing drinks, fueling up for the afternoon ahead. The caravan park seemed like a popular spot for travelers, with many setting up camp and preparing for their own adventures in the Bungle Bungle Range.

In the late afternoon, we made a stop at the shop at Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. While I was hoping to find insect repellent, I was also curious to see what other supplies they offered. The shop had a limited selection of essentials, including snacks, drinks, and some camping gear. While I didn't find what I was looking for, I did pick up a few souvenirs for Leela, a small reminder of our adventure in the Kimberley.

Dinner was at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, and it was a delightful experience. The lodge offers eco-accommodation in the heart of Purnululu National Park, and the setting was simply stunning. The meal was a delicious buffet, with a variety of options to suit every taste. I particularly enjoyed the fresh salads and grilled meats, infused with native herbs and spices.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our adventures. From the serene thermal waters of Zebedee Springs to the vast wilderness of El Questro, it had been a day of discovery and rejuvenation. I felt a deep connection to this land, a sense of peace and awe that is hard to describe. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, to experience the beauty and wonder of our planet.
Tomorrow, we are heading to Lake Argyle, another iconic destination in the Kimberley. I am excited to see what it has in store for us, to witness its vastness and learn about its history. But for now, I am content to sit back, relax, and enjoy the tranquility of the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, under the starlit sky of the Kimberley.
Even though the days are long and filled with activities, I find myself energized by the constant change of scenery and the new experiences each day brings. I am also grateful for the companionship of my friends, who make this adventure even more special. Sharing these moments with them, laughing, exploring, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
And of course, I can't forget to mention the little things that make this trip unique. The taste of the local cuisine, the sound of the birds in the morning, the scent of the eucalyptus trees, the warmth of the sun on my skin. It's these sensory experiences that truly immerse me in the destination, making me feel like I am not just a visitor, but a part of this incredible landscape. I am looking forward to tomorrow, even though I forgot the insect repellent.
The Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge is open between April and September, so remember to plan your trip accordingly. Also, remember to book your trip ahead of time, as the Lodge is popular.
