Adventurous Journey to the Bungle Bungle Range
Day 12: Mini Bungle Bungles and Savouring the Kimberley
Exploring Mirima National Park's ancient rock formations and enjoying delicious meals at Bungle Bungle's unique dining spots.
Hidden Valley's Charms & Kimberley Flavors
Today was a day of contrasts, from exploring ancient landscapes to indulging in the unique culinary offerings of the Kimberley. It's amazing how much this region has to offer, blending natural wonders with delightful experiences. I am excited to share all about it.
Our day began with an early breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. It was simple but satisfying, fueling us up for our exploration of Mirima National Park. Mirima, often called the 'Mini Bungle Bungles,' is just a short drive from Kununurra and it was easy to see why it earned that nickname. The rock formations were incredible, shaped over millions of years, reminding me of a smaller, more accessible version of what we’ve been exploring in Purnululu National Park.

As we entered Mirima National Park, the landscape transformed into a captivating display of layered sandstone rocks. The changing light of the day painted the rocks in mesmerizing hues, making it a photographer's dream. We decided to take the Yoorrnging Geranyem Banan Trail, a 3.5-kilometer loop that promised a deeper dive into the park's beauty and cultural significance. The trail was moderately challenging, with a ladder, stairs, and uneven rock surfaces, but the effort was well worth it.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but marvel at the unique formations. It's incredible to think that this area was once underwater, part of a prehistoric sea. The layers of sandstone, formed from sediments deposited by creeks and windblown sand, tell a story of time and transformation. It's fascinating how a thin layer of black-green algae and lichens protects the sandstone from weathering, a testament to nature's resilience.
Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that echo with the stories of the past, whispering secrets of the land and its people.
What struck me most about Mirima was its cultural significance to the local Miriwoong people. For thousands of years, they have found shelter in these rocks, using the animals and plants for food, medicine, and tool making. Even today, they hold ceremonies in special places within the park, keeping their traditions alive. The signage along the walk provided insights into how the Miriwoong people used the plants, and I appreciated the bilingual signs that help preserve their endangered language.
Thomas was particularly fascinated by the diverse birdlife, craning his neck to spot crimson finches, double-barred finches, and white-quilled rock pigeons. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a wallaby or dingo, but they remained elusive. The park is teeming with life, and it's a reminder of the delicate balance between the environment and its inhabitants.
After our morning hike, we drove back towards the Bungle Bungle Range, stopping for lunch at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. This eco-accommodation offers a serene escape amidst the rugged landscape. As we enjoyed our meal, we chatted with fellow travelers, swapping stories and tips about exploring the Kimberley. The lodge has a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. It was a welcome break to sit and enjoy the scenery.

In the late afternoon, after a bit of a rest, we ventured to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge for dinner. The lodge is known for its excellent dining experience, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The chef-prepared dishes were a delightful fusion of local flavors and international cuisine. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and natural beauty.

It's these contrasts that make this region so special, blending rugged landscapes with moments of comfort and indulgence.
Tomorrow, we are heading to Home Valley Station. I have heard it is an amazing place, and I am excited to see what it holds. We will have breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge before heading out for our next adventure. I am sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery.
The Kimberley continues to surprise and delight me. It's a place where ancient landscapes meet warm hospitality, where adventure and relaxation intertwine. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
I am also happy to report that I managed to find a small shop at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, where I could replace the insect repellent I had forgotten. It's the little things that make a big difference when you're exploring the outback!
As the sun sets over the Bungle Bungle Range, casting a warm glow on the landscape, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. This journey is not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with nature, learning about different cultures, and creating lasting memories with friends. And as I look forward to tomorrow's adventure, I know that the Kimberley has many more surprises in store for us.
The stars are starting to appear, and I think I will join my friends for a nightcap at the bar here at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. I am eager to hear about their highlights of the day.
Until tomorrow!
