Adventurous Journey to the Bungle Bungle Range
Day 11: Chasing Waterfalls and Aboriginal Art in the Kimberley
Discovering the hidden oasis of Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) and immersing in the rich Aboriginal culture of the Kimberley region.
A Kimberley Oasis
Today was a day of stunning natural beauty and cultural immersion in the heart of the Kimberley. After a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, we set off early, eager to experience one of the region's most iconic gorges. The promise of refreshing waters and ancient landscapes spurred us on, and the day certainly didn't disappoint.
Our first stop was Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge). The drive there was an adventure in itself, a testament to the rugged beauty of the Kimberley. The road was corrugated, requiring all our concentration, but the anticipation of reaching the gorge kept our spirits high. I must admit, I briefly missed the smooth roads of Heidelberg, but the raw, untamed landscape quickly won me over. It was a stark reminder of how different this part of the world is from my life back in Germany. Even Thomas, who usually prefers a leisurely pace, was captivated by the drive, his eyes scanning the horizon for glimpses of the gorge. He loves the raw beauty of nature, something so different from his math books and physics equations.
We finally arrived at the Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) car park, and after a quick check of our supplies – water, sunscreen, and of course, my camera – we started the trail. The walk to the gorge was a bit challenging, especially with the heat, but the scenery was simply breathtaking. Sun-bleached rocks and vibrant green bushland created a stunning contrast, and the anticipation of the waterfall grew with each step. I was so glad I remembered to pack my hiking boots; they were essential for navigating the uneven terrain. I did, however, have a pang of regret about forgetting the insect repellent. The flies were relentless!
As we rounded the final bend, the gorge revealed itself in all its glory. The waterfall cascaded down the layered sandstone rocks into a large, inviting pool. The sight was simply magical, a true oasis in the middle of the Australian outback. Leela would have loved this, I thought, picturing her splashing around in the cool water. I made a mental note to bring her back here someday. The colours of the rocks were particularly striking, a mix of amber and orange hues that seemed to glow in the sunlight.
Sometimes, the most beautiful things in life are found in the most unexpected places.
We spent a good part of the morning swimming in the refreshing waters and soaking in the beauty of the gorge. The water was cool and invigorating, a welcome relief from the Kimberley heat. Thomas, ever the adventurer, even climbed to the top of the waterfall for a better view. I, on the other hand, was content to relax by the pool, watching the water cascade down and listening to the sounds of nature. It was so peaceful and serene, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg. For lunch, we enjoyed a simple picnic by the water, enjoying the quiet surroundings. The Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company provided us with a simple but delicious lunch. I had a sandwich with locally sourced beef, which was absolutely divine.
After our refreshing dip and satisfying lunch, we decided to explore the shop at Bungle Bungle Guided Tours. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Heidelberg. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and Aboriginal art. I was particularly drawn to the paintings, which depicted the Dreamtime stories of the local indigenous people. The colours and patterns were so vibrant and evocative, a true reflection of the Kimberley landscape.
I spent quite some time browsing the shop, admiring the intricate details of the artwork. I ended up buying a small painting of a Bungle Bungle landscape, as well as a couple of handmade bracelets for Leela and Thomas. I wanted to support the local artists and bring a piece of the Kimberley back home with me. It's important to me to support local communities wherever I travel, a value instilled in me from my upbringing in Nashik.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park, where we enjoyed a hearty dinner. The food was delicious, especially the Barramundi. The chef had clearly put a lot of care and attention into the meal, and I appreciated the effort. The staff at the lodge were incredibly friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home.
After dinner, we sat by the outdoor fireplace, enjoying the cool evening air and gazing at the stars. The night sky in the Kimberley is simply breathtaking, with millions of stars twinkling like diamonds. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. I felt so grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible part of the world with my friends. It's moments like these that make all the challenges of expat life worthwhile.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Mirima National Park. I'm excited to see more of the Kimberley landscape and learn more about its rich cultural history. I'm also looking forward to having a drink at the bar in Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, a perfect way to celebrate our adventures.
Before drifting off to sleep, I reflected on the day's adventures. Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) was a true highlight, a hidden oasis that surpassed all my expectations. The refreshing waters, stunning scenery, and sense of peace and tranquility made it a truly unforgettable experience. The shop at Bungle Bungle Guided Tours was also a highlight, providing a glimpse into the rich Aboriginal culture of the Kimberley. I felt so privileged to be able to witness this ancient culture firsthand and support the local artists. As I closed my eyes, I knew that this day would stay with me long after I returned to Heidelberg.
This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the beauty and diversity of our planet. It's also been a chance to reconnect with myself and appreciate the simple things in life. As an Indian expat living in Germany, I often feel like I'm caught between two worlds. But here in the Kimberley, I feel a sense of belonging, a connection to the land and its people. It's a feeling that I will cherish forever.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The Kimberley has so much to offer, and I'm eager to discover more of its hidden treasures. I know that there will be challenges along the way, but I'm confident that we can overcome them together. After all, that's what friends are for. And with that thought, I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of waterfalls, Aboriginal art, and the endless possibilities of the Kimberley.
