Discover the breathtaking beauty of Lake Argyle, a Kimberley treasure, with its stunning landscapes and unforgettable sunset cruises.
A Day of Kimberley Wonders
The Kimberley has a way of surprising you at every turn, and today was no exception. After settling into the rhythm of the Bungle Bungle, I was ready for a change of scenery, and Lake Argyle promised just that. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore this vast expanse of water, eager to discover its hidden gems.

Our day began with breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. It's always a treat to start the day with a hearty meal, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The caravan park had a lively atmosphere, with fellow travelers sharing stories and tips about the region. It’s amazing how quickly you can connect with people when you’re all united by a love for exploration. I made sure to grab an extra bottle of water, remembering my oversight with the insect repellent – lesson definitely learned!
After breakfast, we packed up our gear and started our journey towards Lake Argyle. The drive itself was incredibly scenic, with the landscape transforming from the rugged Bungle Bungle to the more open Kimberley terrain. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we passed through the Carr Boyd Ranges, the sun casting long shadows across the ancient rocks. It reminded me of the landscapes back in India, yet with a uniquely Australian charm. The drive from the Bungle Bungle Range to Lake Argyle was roughly 300 kilometers, taking about 4 hours.
Arriving at Lake Argyle, I was immediately struck by its sheer size. It’s hard to believe that this is actually a man-made lake, created by damming the Ord River. The lake is massive, holding more than 18 times the volume of Sydney Harbour when full. The views were simply breathtaking. The vast expanse of water, dotted with islands and surrounded by rugged cliffs, created a sense of serene isolation. The weather in December is hot, with average highs around 38°C (100°F), so we were grateful for the air conditioning in our vehicle.
For lunch, we stopped at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, where we enjoyed a satisfying meal. The lodge offered a welcome respite from the heat, and the food was delicious, especially considering how remote we were. I opted for the barramundi, a local specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. Thomas would have loved this! I made a mental note to try and recreate the dish when I got back to Heidelberg. The lodge itself was lovely, and I can see why many people choose to stay here when visiting the Bungle Bungle. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the facilities were top-notch.

The beauty of Lake Argyle lies not just in its stunning vistas, but in the sense of peace and tranquility it instills in those who visit.
After lunch, we decided to explore the lake further by taking a sunset cruise. Several companies offer cruises on Lake Argyle, and we chose one that came highly recommended. As we set off, the guide shared fascinating insights into the lake's history, its creation, and its diverse ecosystem. I learned that Lake Argyle is home to over 240 species of birds, as well as freshwater crocodiles, wallabies, and a variety of fish. I was particularly excited to spot some wallabies grazing near the water's edge.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The lake mirrored the sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle. It was the kind of moment that makes you feel incredibly grateful to be alive. The cruise stopped at a secluded spot where we could take a dip in the lake. Swimming in Lake Argyle as the sun set was an experience I will never forget. The water was refreshing, and the views were simply magical. My friends and I floated in the water, sipping on complimentary drinks and sharing stories. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
After the cruise, we had dinner at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The lodge is known for its excellent food, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local beef, cooked to perfection. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of adventure and exploration. We even stopped by the bar at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge for a nightcap. Sipping on a glass of wine under the starlit sky, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The stars seemed brighter out here in the outback, and I couldn't help but feel a connection to the vastness of the universe.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge). I’ve heard it’s another Kimberley highlight, and I’m eager to explore its waterfalls and swimming holes. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Bungle Bungle Guided Tours shop, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Leela and Thomas.
As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Lake Argyle. It's a place that truly captures the spirit of the Kimberley, with its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and warm hospitality. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to discover new places, meet new people, and create lasting memories. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our adventure through this incredible part of the world. Good night from the Kimberley!
