Day 5: Discovering Chiang Mai's Tranquil Side

Today was a day of exploration, a journey into the heart of Chiang Mai's serene landscapes and cultural treasures. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of the Makka Hotel, we ventured into a world of cascading waterfalls, ancient temples, and the artistry of elephant wood carvings. It was a day filled with moments of quiet reflection and joyful discovery, a perfect blend of nature and culture that defines the charm of Northern Thailand.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe de Thaan Aoan. It was a delightful spot with a cozy atmosphere. I opted for a classic bagel with smoked salmon, while Thomas enjoyed a robust cup of Americano. Leela, of course, was thrilled with her pancakes. Fuelled up, we set off towards our first destination: Mae Kampong Waterfall.

The drive itself was an adventure. As we wound our way up the mountain, I couldn't help but feel grateful that we had hired a reliable driver for the day. The roads were narrow and winding, a far cry from the autobahns of Germany. The air grew cooler and crisper as we ascended, offering a welcome respite from the Chiang Mai heat. I couldn't help but think how much I missed the Odenwald forest back home, but the lush greenery surrounding us was a comforting reminder of nature's beauty.

Reaching Mae Kampong Waterfall was like stepping into another world. The waterfall wasn't as massive as Iguazu, which I visited during my South American backpacking days, but it possessed a unique charm. The water was cool and clear, cascading down several tiers of rocks. Leela was immediately captivated, wanting to splash around. We spent a blissful hour exploring the area, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It was a perfect escape from the city, a reminder of the simple joys of nature.

The journey is the destination, a sentiment that perfectly captured our day of exploration and discovery in Chiang Mai.

After our refreshing interlude at Mae Kampong Waterfall, our cultural exploration continued with a visit to Wat Umong Suan Putthatham. This ancient temple, over 700 years old, offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and spirituality of the region. As we approached the temple, a sense of calm washed over me. The lush greenery, the gentle sounds of nature, and the serene atmosphere created a sanctuary of peace.

Wat Umong is renowned for its unique tunnel system, built in the 13th century as a meditation space for monks. Walking through these ancient tunnels, I could feel the weight of history, the echoes of countless prayers and meditations. The walls were adorned with inscriptions of Buddhist teachings, a testament to the temple's enduring legacy. Leela, ever curious, peppered us with questions about the monks, the Buddha, and the meaning of the symbols. It was a wonderful opportunity to share a part of my own cultural heritage with her, to explain the significance of Buddhism and its teachings of compassion and mindfulness.

The temple grounds were equally captivating. We strolled through Suan Putthatham, a lush garden filled with ancient trees and serene meditation spots. I was particularly drawn to the replica of the Ashok pillar, a symbol of the establishment of Buddhism in northern Thailand. It was a poignant reminder of the enduring influence of Indian culture on this region, a connection that resonates deeply within me.

For lunch, we decided to try Jarid Thai Food. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, and the menu offered a wide array of Thai dishes. Thomas was in his element, ordering Pad Thai. I opted for something new, and I was not disappointed. The food was delicious, bursting with authentic Thai flavors. Leela enjoyed her usual mango sticky rice, declaring it the best she had ever tasted.

Our final stop for the day was Baan Jang Nak, a museum dedicated to the art of elephant wood carvings. As we approached the museum, we were greeted by an impressive collection of intricately carved sculptures, each one celebrating the majesty of elephants. Baan Jang Nak is home to hundreds of beautiful wooden elephants and elephants of different material, created by local carvers. I have always felt a deep connection with elephants. They are gentle giants, symbols of wisdom, strength, and good fortune.

Walking through the museum, I was mesmerized by the skill and artistry of the local carvers. Each sculpture was a testament to their deep connection with these magnificent creatures, a celebration of their beauty and grace. Leela was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the carvings, spending hours admiring each one. She even picked out a small wooden elephant to take home as a souvenir, a reminder of our day of exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to the hotel, we made a quick stop at The Kalae Bar. I decided to try a local beer while Thomas had a coke. Leela was exhausted, so she quickly fell asleep.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the Makka Hotel, tired but happy. Today had been a journey of discovery, a chance to explore the hidden gems of Chiang Mai and connect with its rich culture and natural beauty. From the cascading waters of Mae Kampong Waterfall to the ancient tunnels of Wat Umong, from the delicious flavors of Jarid Thai Food to the artistry of Baan Jang Nak, every moment had been a treasure.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Wat Phra That Doi Saket, Chiang Mai Zoo, and Huay Keaw Waterfall. In the evening, we plan to explore San Kamphaeng Saturday Walking Street. I am looking forward to sharing more experiences with you all.

As I reflect on our day, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences, of stepping outside our comfort zones, and of connecting with the world around us. Thailand has a lot to offer. It is a land of beauty, culture, and spirituality, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore its hidden gems with my family. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a journey of self-discovery, a chance to learn, grow, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
