A Day of Discovery in Chiang Mai
Today was a day of delving into the heart of Chiang Mai, exploring ancient ruins, serene temples, and bustling markets. It’s amazing how much history and culture is packed into this one city. I was excited to see what the day would bring, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Our first stop was Wiang Kum Kam, an ancient city that predates Chiang Mai. To think that this was once a thriving capital, now mostly ruins reclaimed by nature, was quite surreal. It's a humbling experience to walk through these historical sites, imagining what life was like centuries ago. Leela was particularly fascinated by the crumbling walls and imagining what it must have been like for children her age living back then. I tried to explain to her the importance of the temples and the King, but I think she was more interested in the monkeys!

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.
We explored the site, and learned that Wiang Kum Kam was founded by King Mangrai in the late 13th century, but was abandoned due to repeated flooding. The city was lost for centuries, only to be rediscovered and excavated in recent times. It's hard to believe that such a significant historical site was hidden beneath layers of mud and silt. It really puts things into perspective, doesn't it? The kids loved running around the ruins, and Thomas, ever the history buff, was in his element, reading every sign and explaining the historical significance to anyone who would listen. I was particularly moved by Wat Chedi Liam, a Mon-style temple dating back to 1288. The stepped pyramid-shaped chedi was truly spectacular.
Next on our list was Wat Phra That Doi Kham, also known as the Temple of the Golden Mountain. Perched on a hilltop, the temple offered stunning panoramic views of Chiang Mai. The drive up was quite an adventure, with winding roads and lush greenery all around. I was a little nervous, but Thomas is a confident driver, and we made it up without any issues. This temple is much newer than Wiang Kum Kam, dating back to the late 7th or early 8th century. Legend has it that the temple was built on the spot where a white elephant, carrying a Buddha relic, collapsed and died. There is a colossal seated Buddha image, known as Phra Chao Tan Jai, which is believed to grant blessings and protection. I made sure to light some incense and offer a prayer for our family's well-being.

Leela was amazed by the 17-meter-high seated Buddha image, Phra Chao Tan Jai. The sheer size of the statue is awe-inspiring, and the golden color shimmers in the sunlight. We walked around the temple grounds, taking in the serene atmosphere and enjoying the breathtaking views. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but no picture could truly do it justice. You really have to be there to experience it.
After a morning of historical and spiritual exploration, we were ready for some retail therapy. We headed to Warorot Market (Kad Luang), Chiang Mai's oldest and most famous market. This place is a sensory overload in the best possible way. From the moment we stepped inside, we were surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Stalls overflowed with everything imaginable: fresh produce, spices, textiles, clothing, handicrafts, and street food galore. It was like stepping into another world.

I was on a mission to find some authentic Northern Thai delicacies. I managed to snag some Sai Oua (Northern Thai sausage) and Nam phrik num (green chili paste) to take back to Heidelberg. I'm already dreaming of recreating some of my favorite Thai dishes at home. Leela, of course, was more interested in the sweets. She convinced me to buy her some mango sticky rice, which she devoured in about five minutes flat. Thomas, meanwhile, was haggling for a new shirt. He loves a good bargain, and Warorot Market is the perfect place to practice his negotiating skills.
For breakfast, we tried Goodsouls Kitchen, a vegan restaurant that came highly recommended. As someone who enjoys exploring vegetarian options, I was eager to try it out. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the menu was extensive, with a mix of Western and Thai dishes. I ordered the Khao Soi, a Northern Thai curry noodle soup, and it was absolutely delicious. Thomas had a veggie burger, which he also enjoyed, and Leela opted for pancakes. It's always a win when everyone finds something they like.

Lunch was at The Swan Burmese Cuisine, and it was such a treat. I had never really explored Burmese food before, and I was pleasantly surprised. The flavors were rich and complex, with influences from both India and Thailand. We tried a variety of dishes, including the tea leaf salad and some flavorful curries. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, guiding us through the menu and making recommendations. It was a truly memorable meal.

As evening approached, we ventured into the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. The market was incredibly lively, with vendors selling all sorts of goods, from handicrafts and clothing to electronics and souvenirs. The atmosphere was electric, with street performers entertaining the crowds and the aroma of street food filling the air. I found some beautiful silk scarves and some unique jewelry. Leela was thrilled with her new elephant toy, and Thomas found a new watch.

For dinner, we chose Paak Dang Riverside Restaurant, wanting to enjoy a meal with a view. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with a mix of traditional and modern elements. We sat on the outdoor terrace, overlooking the Ping River, and it was magical. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. The kids enjoyed their meals, and Thomas and I savored the romantic atmosphere.

The Borsang Umbrella and Sankhampaeng Craft Festival is coming up later this month, showcasing hand-painted parasols and local crafts. It sounds like a vibrant event, and I'm a little sad we'll be missing it. And I am also a bit sad we are missing the Chiang Rai Every Day event which sounds like a unique setting for wellness seekers, offering diverse workshops from traditional Thai massage to meditation retreats and opportunities to discover the region's vibrant local products. Maybe next time we can plan our trip around these festivals.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan, the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre, and Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn. I am particularly excited about the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre, as it will give me a deeper understanding of the local arts scene.
Tonight, as I sit here writing this blog, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chiang Mai has captured my heart with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. It's a place that truly nourishes the soul, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I think I will get a good night's sleep, ready for another day of adventures. I am glad I remembered to bring my comfortable walking shoes, but I do wish I had remembered the umbrella! Oh well, I am sure we can pick one up at the market tomorrow. Good night from Chiang Mai!
