Kyoto's Gentle Embrace

Today was a beautiful exploration of Kyoto, a city that continues to enchant me with its blend of tranquility and vibrant culture. From the serene Philosopher's Path to the grandeur of Heian Shrine, and the exquisite culinary experiences, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Japan. It’s amazing how much you can experience in a single day, especially when you allow yourself to be fully present and open to the unexpected.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Hanasaki. The restaurant was so beautiful, and the Kyoto-style dishes were delicious. Fuelled up for a day of exploring, I made my way to the Philosopher's Path.

The air was crisp, with a hint of winter still lingering, as I set off to walk the famed Philosopher's Path. Though February isn't the season for cherry blossoms, the path held a quiet charm. The canal flowed gently beside the stone walkway, reflecting the bare trees and the soft, overcast sky. I could imagine the philosopher Nishida Kitaro deep in thought as he strolled this very path, seeking inspiration in the simplicity of nature. The quietude was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds and the soft crunch of gravel underfoot. It was a perfect opportunity for introspection and a welcome escape from the bustling city.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of reflection and appreciation.

As I walked, I pondered the journey so far. Being here by myself gives me the freedom to explore and reflect in a way that's different from travelling with Maximilian and Astrid. I miss them, of course, but this solo time is precious. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to observe the details I might otherwise miss. I paused by a small stone bridge, watching the water ripple. I thought about Astrid and how much she would have loved feeding the ducks that occasionally paddled by. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. Soon the plum blossoms will bloom, and I know that Astrid would love to see the vibrant pink and white flowers.

The Philosopher's Path eventually led me to Heian Shrine.

The sight of the giant torii gate was truly impressive! The shrine itself was stunning, with its vermillion pillars and tranquil gardens. I spent some time wandering through the grounds, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The shrine was built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding, and is dedicated to Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei. I was struck by the sense of history and the reverence that permeated the air. It was easy to see why this place is considered one of Kyoto's most important Shinto shrines.

I learned that Heian Shrine is known for its Setsubun festival in February, featuring bean-throwing ceremonies to ward off evil spirits. Although I am visiting a bit after the festival, I felt a lingering sense of purification and renewal in the air. I took a moment to light some incense and offer a prayer for my family's health and happiness.

Lunch at Chihana was an experience in itself.

This restaurant has been awarded three stars by the world-renowned gourmet guide for nine consecutive years. The restaurant is known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine, and the presentation of each dish was a work of art. The combination of classic Japanese cuisine and sophisticated urban cuisine created an extraordinary feeling. The appetizers were a combination of seasonal fruits with seafood and the soup dish included raw yuba. I enjoyed the flavors and the tranquil atmosphere of the restaurant.

As the afternoon waned, it was time for a truly exceptional dining experience: dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION.

I had heard so much about Kobe beef, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant was elegant, with a teppanyaki grill where the chef prepared the meal right before my eyes. I opted for the Kobe sirloin steak, and it was, without a doubt, the most tender and flavorful beef I had ever tasted. The chef expertly grilled the steak to perfection, and it simply melted in my mouth. The meal was a true indulgence, and every bite was savored.

To cap off the evening, I decided to explore Kyoto's nightlife a bit. I ventured to Bar Fishbowl,

a cozy spot known for its extensive selection of Japanese whiskeys and creative cocktails. The bartender, Jesse, was incredibly welcoming, and we chatted about the city and its hidden gems. I tried a local craft beer, which was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and culinary delights. The bar had a trendy and modern decor and a charged atmosphere. It was a great meeting point for locals and travellers.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to appreciate the simple things. The Philosopher's Path, Heian Shrine, the exquisite meals, and the friendly faces have all contributed to a truly unforgettable experience. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Gion and Yasaka Shrine, immersing myself further in Kyoto's rich cultural tapestry. I'm also planning to visit Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. I can't wait to see what new adventures await.

I'm also thinking about the Setsubun festival and the Baikasai plum blossom festival. Perhaps Maximilian and Astrid would enjoy seeing the rituals and plum blossoms. I will have to plan a trip for us in the future.

For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories of today and look forward to whatever tomorrow may bring. As I drift off to sleep, I can still taste the Kobe beef and hear the gentle flow of the canal along the Philosopher's Path. Kyoto, you have stolen a piece of my heart.

It's wonderful to know that back in Berlin, Maximilian and Astrid are likely settling into their own routines. I imagine Astrid is probably reading one of her favorite Astrid Lindgren books, perhaps Pippi Longstocking, while Maximilian is engrossed in his coding. I cherish these moments of connection, even from afar, and I know that our reunion will be all the sweeter for the time we've spent apart. I know that they are thinking of me, just as I am thinking of them. And I am grateful for the opportunity to experience these wonderful adventures that I can share with them when I return.

This solo journey is not just about seeing new places, but also about rediscovering myself and finding new inspiration. And as I continue to explore Kyoto, I know that I will carry these experiences with me long after I leave.

I am so grateful to be here, in this beautiful city, and I am excited for what the next few days will bring. I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers. I hope that my words and photos can inspire you to embark on your own adventures, whether they are solo journeys or family vacations. The world is full of wonders, and it's waiting to be explored.
