Wheels, Tales, and Twilight Ales

Today marked a fascinating turn in my Shikoku adventure, a blend of revving engines and whispers from the past. It’s funny how travel can surprise you; one day you’re amidst serene temples, and the next, you’re surrounded by classic cars. Today was a reminder that every corner of this island holds a unique story, waiting to be discovered.

My morning began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. I opted for a traditional set meal, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant, with its Showa-era décor, was the perfect way to start the day. Sipping on green tea, I felt a sense of anticipation for the day ahead, a feeling I always cherish when exploring a new place.

The first stop was the Shikoku Automobile Museum. Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest car enthusiast, but I appreciate design and history, and this museum had both in spades. From vintage European sports cars to iconic Japanese models, the collection was a testament to the evolution of automotive engineering. I was particularly drawn to a sleek Toyota 2000GT, a true beauty. It was easy to lose track of time wandering through the exhibits, admiring the craftsmanship and learning about the stories behind these machines.

Sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the most enriching experiences.

After immersing myself in the world of automobiles, it was time to delve into the local folklore at the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. This traditional thatched-roof house, dating back to the Edo period, offered a glimpse into the lives of the Heike samurai who sought refuge in this region centuries ago. The museum housed a collection of artifacts and relics, each with its own story to tell. While the English descriptions were limited, I found an English summary that helped me navigate the museum and understand the historical context. The tranquil courtyard provided a peaceful setting to reflect on the tales of the past, the rise and fall, the battles, and the myths that surround them.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Tosa Rokkon. This charming restaurant offered a taste of local cuisine, and I decided to try their specialty, Katsuo Tataki (seared skipjack tuna). The dish was a revelation, the smoky flavor of the tuna perfectly complemented by the tangy ponzu sauce and fresh ginger. It was a true culinary highlight of my trip so far.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, I found myself at BAR OOKUNI. I decided to try some local sake. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, guiding me through the different varieties and sharing insights into the brewing process. It was a relaxing way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I ventured to Inonakanokawazu, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I indulged in a multi-course meal, each dish a work of art in itself. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful tempura, every bite was a delight to the senses. The ambiance of the restaurant was serene and inviting, making for a truly memorable dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had encountered. From the revving engines of the Shikoku Automobile Museum to the echoes of the past at the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore, today had been a journey through time and culture. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the stories and traditions that make each destination unique.

Reflecting on the day, I was reminded of a Shona proverb my grandmother used to say: “*Ukama igasva hunozadziswa nekudya*” – relationships are like a small dish that is filled by sharing food. Today, I shared food, stories, and experiences with the people and places of Shikoku, and my relationship with this island grew stronger. It also reminded me of David and Thandiwe back home. I can't wait to share some of these stories with them when I get back to Stratford.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge and Todoroki Falls. I’m excited to experience the natural beauty of this region, and I have a feeling that more adventures await. I might even pick up a Japanese phrasebook at the AEON MALL Kochi, something I realized I should have packed.

Until then, *totenda pane zvese* – thank you for everything, Shikoku. Goodnight!

More on the Automobile Museum

The Shikoku Automobile Museum was smaller than I expected, but it was packed with a variety of cars and motorcycles, most dating from the 1960s to the 1980s. The museum wasn't crowded, which allowed me to take my time and really appreciate each vehicle. The cars were beautifully presented, and it was clear that the owners took great pride in their collection. Even for someone like me, who isn't a huge car buff, the museum was a fascinating glimpse into the history of automotive design and technology. I particularly enjoyed seeing the Toyota 2000GT, which is considered a classic Japanese sports car. There was also a DeLorean DMC-12, the car made famous by the *Back to the Future* movies, which was a fun surprise. The museum is owned by Toyota, and it’s great that these owners have let their cars be shown to the public, rather than storing them away in a dark garage somewhere.

Delving Into The Past

The Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore offered a different kind of experience. This museum is housed in a traditional thatched-roof house that dates back to the Edo period. The house was once the home of the Nishioka family, who are descendants of the Heike samurai who fled to this region after being defeated in battle. The museum contains a collection of artifacts related to the Heike clan and the history of the Iya Valley. Although there was an English summary provided with the ticket, I think it would be nice to have more English descriptions inside the museum. However, I was able to get a good sense of the history and culture of the area. The museum is surrounded by a beautiful garden, which is a nice place to relax and take in the scenery. The views overlooking the Oboke Gorge were wonderful.

A Culinary Day

Today's dining experiences were truly memorable. Hakkenden Nankoku Osone provided a traditional Japanese breakfast that energized me for the day. Tosa Rokkon's Katsuo Tataki was a culinary highlight, showcasing the fresh flavors of Kochi. The sake at BAR OOKUNI was a perfect way to unwind, and Inonakanokawazu offered a sophisticated dining experience with its artful presentation and delicious dishes. I'm glad I tried such a variety of local cuisine today.

Tomorrow's Plans

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the natural beauty of the Iya Valley. The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge is a must-see, and I'm also looking forward to visiting Todoroki Falls. I might also do a little shopping at the AEON MALL Kochi, as I realized I forgot to pack a Japanese phrasebook. It will be another day of adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what it holds.

Final Thoughts

Today was a day of contrasts, from the sleek lines of classic cars to the rustic charm of a traditional farmhouse. It was a day of learning and discovery, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience the rich culture and history of Shikoku Island. As I reflect on my journey so far, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected and being open to new experiences. Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the people and cultures that make each destination unique. And as I continue my solo adventure, I'm excited to see what other surprises await me around the next corner.

I am also looking forward to sharing all of these experiences with David and Thandiwe when I return home. I know Thandiwe will be particularly interested in the folklore and legends of the Heike clan, and David will appreciate the history and craftsmanship of the classic cars. Until then, I will continue to explore and share my adventures with you all. *Famba zvakanaka* – travel well!
