Swinging High and Diving Deep: A Day Embracing Kochi's Wild Side

Today was all about immersing myself in the raw, untamed beauty of Kochi. It was a day filled with adrenaline-pumping heights and the soothing sounds of cascading water. These are the days that remind me why I set out on this solo journey in the first place – to challenge myself, to connect with nature, and to find moments of quiet reflection amidst the chaos of life.

My day began with breakfast at Hattorikun. I enjoyed a hearty Japanese breakfast set, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. It was a simple meal, but delicious. I particularly enjoyed the grilled fish and the miso soup, which had a depth of flavor that reminded me of my mother's cooking. It made me think of Thandiwe and David back home, and I sent them a quick message, letting them know I was thinking of them. I miss our Sunday morning breakfasts together, but this solo journey is something I needed to do for myself. I savored every last bite, knowing that I needed the energy for the day's explorations.

The first stop on my itinerary was the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge. The drive there was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking views at every turn. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I approached the bridge, I could feel my heart rate quicken with anticipation. I remember reading about these bridges and seeing photos, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. These bridges were originally built by the Heike clan, so the story goes, as a means of accessing their training grounds on Mt. Tsurugi. It's amazing to think about the history beneath my feet as I walked across.

The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge is not just one bridge, but two – a male bridge and a female bridge, each with its own unique character. The male bridge, longer and higher, offered a thrilling walk with the gorge yawning below. The female bridge was shorter and closer to the water, providing a more intimate connection with the natural surroundings. The bridges are constructed from woven vines, with sturdy steel cables providing the necessary support. As I stepped onto the first bridge, I couldn't help but feel a surge of adrenaline. The bridge swayed gently with each step, and the gaps between the vines offered tantalizing glimpses of the river below. I took my time, carefully placing each foot and soaking in the stunning views. The lush green mountains rose on either side, and the clear water of the Iya River sparkled in the sunlight. It was a truly magical experience.

After crossing both bridges, I decided to try the Wild Monkey, a hand-powered ropeway that offered a unique way to traverse the gorge. Hopping into the small wooden basket, I pulled myself across the river, hand over hand, feeling like a true adventurer. It was exhilarating and a little bit comical, and I couldn't help but laugh at myself as I struggled to gain momentum. I thought of Thandiwe and how much she would have loved this. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. The views from the ropeway were incredible, offering a different perspective of the bridges and the surrounding landscape. It was a fun and memorable experience that I wouldn't soon forget.

Next on the agenda was Todoroki Falls. After the thrill of the vine bridges, I was ready for something a little more serene. The drive to the falls took me through more winding mountain roads, each turn revealing new vistas of rolling hills and verdant forests. As I got closer, I could hear the distant roar of the falls, a promise of the natural spectacle that awaited me. The walk to the falls was short but steep, leading me through a lush forest filled with the sounds of birdsong and the scent of damp earth. When I finally reached the falls, I was not disappointed.

Todoroki Falls is a majestic cascade of water that plunges down a rocky cliff into a crystal-clear pool below. The falls are surrounded by dense forest, creating a sense of secluded tranquility. I stood there for a long time, simply watching the water as it tumbled down the rocks, listening to its soothing roar, and feeling the cool mist on my skin. It was a perfect moment of peace and reflection.

I found a quiet spot on a nearby rock and sat down to meditate. Closing my eyes, I focused on my breath, letting the sounds of the falls wash over me. It was easy to lose myself in the moment, to forget about the stresses of daily life and simply be present in the beauty of nature. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to connect with myself and with the world around me.

After my meditative interlude, I worked up an appetite and headed to Amekaze Shokudo for lunch. This charming restaurant offered a variety of local dishes, and I decided to try the Kochi ramen. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, the perfect way to refuel after a day of adventure. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. I savored every bite, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendly conversation with the staff.

With the afternoon still stretching ahead, I decided to do some shopping at AEON MALL Kochi. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular, but I enjoyed browsing the shops and soaking in the local atmosphere. It was interesting to see the variety of goods on offer, from traditional crafts to modern electronics. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Thandiwe and David, little reminders of my trip that I knew they would appreciate. I even treated myself to a new lens for my camera, hoping to capture even more of the stunning scenery I've been encountering on this trip.

As evening approached, I settled down for dinner at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. It's a family restaurant, and it was just what I needed after a long day. I ordered a simple set meal and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. It was a far cry from the fine dining experiences I sometimes indulge in back in Canada, but it was perfect for the occasion. I watched families enjoying their meals, children laughing and playing, and couples sharing quiet conversations. It was a reminder of the simple joys of life, the importance of connection and community.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Shikoku adventure, and I'll be heading to Tobinosu Canyon and the Kurushima Strait Observatory. I am excited to see what wonders await me. I plan to end my trip with a visit to Bar Salvador. I'm hoping to find a moment to reflect on everything I've experienced over the past ten days. This solo journey has been transformative, challenging me in ways I never expected and opening my eyes to new perspectives. I've learned so much about myself, about Japan, and about the world around me. I'm grateful for every moment, every challenge, and every opportunity for growth. I know that I'll return home a changed woman, with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and wonder of life.

I'm looking forward to sharing more stories and photos with you all soon. Until then, stay tuned and keep exploring!
