Family Adventure in Hoi An's Ancient Charm
Day 6: Lanterns, Rivers, and Irish Cheer: A Hoi An Evening
Drifting down the Thu Bồn River under a canopy of lanterns, savoring Vietnamese flavors, and finding a bit of Ireland in Hoi An.
Enchanting Evenings in Hoi An
Today was a day of embracing the magic that Hoi An offers after sunset. From tranquil river cruises to the lively buzz of local pubs, it was an experience that painted a vivid picture of this ancient town's charm. It was one of those days where the real adventure happened as the sun dipped below the horizon, and the city transformed into a mesmerizing spectacle of lights and shadows.
Our day began with a lovely breakfast at Restaurant & Cafe Tuấn Rich Flavor of Hoi An Vietnamese Familly Restaurant. It's always wonderful to find those family-run spots that just exude warmth and authenticity. The Bún chả was especially delicious, a perfect start to fuel our adventures.

With our bellies full, we headed out to the Thu Bồn River. Saoirse was particularly excited about the prospect of a boat trip. The November air was mild, with temperatures comfortably in the mid-70s, making it ideal for a leisurely cruise. We found a charming little boat, adorned with its own set of colorful lanterns, waiting to whisk us away. As we glided along the water, the reflections of the town's lights danced on the surface, creating a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

The boat ride itself was incredibly peaceful. Our boat was steered by a local woman who told us stories about the river and its significance to Hoi An's history. Saoirse was captivated, peppering her with questions about the lanterns and the traditions surrounding them. Releasing a lantern onto the river, making a wish for good fortune and safe travels for our family, was a particularly special moment. The gentle current carried our lantern away, joining dozens of others in a silent, shimmering procession.
The magic of Hoi An lies not just in its ancient architecture, but in the way it embraces the night, transforming into a living, breathing canvas of light and color.
After our serene river journey, lunch called, and we decided on Mr. Sơn Restaurant. It had been recommended to us for its authentic Cao lầu, and it did not disappoint. The flavors were rich and complex, a true taste of central Vietnam. Hans even braved the chili sauce, much to Saoirse's amusement!

As evening approached, we ventured back into the heart of Hoi An's Old Town, drawn in by the promise of dinner at Morning Glory Original. Finding a table wasn't easy, but it was well worth the wait. The restaurant bustled with activity, the open kitchen a hive of culinary artistry. I opted for the Banh Xeo, while Hans enjoyed the Mi Quang. Saoirse, ever adventurous, tried the white rose dumplings and declared them her new favorite.

With our appetites thoroughly satisfied, we decided to embrace the lively nightlife of Hoi An. Now, I know what you might be thinking – Aoife, the ESL teacher from Berlin, in an Irish pub in Vietnam? But sometimes, you just need a little taste of home, even when you're thousands of miles away. So, we found ourselves at The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An.

The pub was surprisingly authentic, with Guinness on tap and live music filling the air. It was a bit surreal to be surrounded by Irish memorabilia in the middle of Vietnam, but the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We even met an Australian expat who owned the place, and we shared stories about our travels and experiences abroad. Hans enjoyed a pint of Guinness while Saoirse sipped on a soft drink, tapping her feet to the music. I felt a pang of nostalgia for Westport, and promised myself I’d get to a traditional music session when I returned to Berlin.
As we sat there, enjoying the music and the company, I couldn't help but reflect on the day. Hoi An had surprised me once again with its ability to seamlessly blend cultures and traditions. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things and connecting with people from all walks of life.
I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include a visit to the Cam Thanh Rice Fields and the Ancient House. I'm hoping to learn more about the local agriculture and architecture, and perhaps even try my hand at some traditional crafts. Saoirse is keen on visiting the BLOOM HOI AN STORE, maybe we will find a souvenir there. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration.
The weather in November has been quite pleasant, with only occasional showers, and mostly sunny skies. It is a great time to visit Hoi An, as the crowds are smaller than in the peak season. I would recommend packing a light jacket or sweater for the evenings, as it can get a bit cooler.
It's amazing how a place so far from home can feel so familiar and welcoming. Hoi An has a way of capturing your heart, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
And as I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the faint sounds of Irish music mingling with the gentle lapping of the Thu Bồn River, a symphony of cultures that perfectly encapsulates the magic of Hoi An.
I think I'll dream of County Mayo tonight, too.
