Fes Through a Kaleidoscope

Today was a day of vibrant discoveries and sensory delights in Fes. From exploring colorful streets to savoring authentic Moroccan flavors, every moment was a new experience etched into my memory. Join me as I recount our family's adventures through the heart of this ancient city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Les Mystères de Dar Tajine. It was a charming little spot, and the atmosphere was so inviting. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the decor had a lovely, relaxed feel. Saoirse was particularly taken with the intricately designed teacups, each one a unique piece of art. I opted for the traditional Moroccan pancakes, which were light and fluffy, served with a drizzle of honey. Hans, ever the coffee aficionado, thoroughly enjoyed his strong, aromatic brew. It was the perfect way to kickstart our day of exploration.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was Place de Florence. The square was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. The architecture around the square was stunning, a blend of traditional Moroccan design and European influences. It was fascinating to watch the ebb and flow of daily life, people chatting, children playing, and the general hum of the city creating a symphony of sounds. Saoirse, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by a group of men playing a traditional board game, their faces etched with concentration. It reminded me of the quiet evenings back in Westport, watching the locals play cards in the pub.

Next on our itinerary was Bab Makina Plaza, a place steeped in history. The sheer scale of the plaza was awe-inspiring, surrounded by high stone walls that whispered tales of centuries past. I learned that Bab Makina was once an arms factory, an early attempt at industrialization in Fes. It's incredible to think that this place, now a venue for music festivals and cultural events, once played a role in the city's defense. The architecture had an Italianate style, a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped Fes over the years. Hans, with his background in engineering, was particularly interested in the structural design of the plaza, marveling at the ingenuity of the builders.

One of the highlights of our day was undoubtedly Rainbow Street Art. As we turned the corner, we were greeted by an explosion of color. Every wall was adorned with vibrant murals, each one telling a unique story. Saoirse was in her element, snapping photos from every angle, her eyes wide with wonder. It was incredible to see how art could transform a simple street into a lively and engaging space. We met a local artist who shared the inspiration behind some of the murals, explaining how they reflected the city's history, culture, and hopes for the future. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of art in expressing identity and fostering community.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for lunch. We headed to Zohra, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The warm atmosphere made us feel right at home. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, each one bursting with fresh flavors and vibrant colors. For the main course, I couldn't resist trying the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. The meat was tender and succulent, infused with a blend of spices that danced on my palate. Hans opted for the couscous, a staple of Moroccan cuisine, while Saoirse, always up for trying new things, enjoyed a flavorful soup. The meal was a true culinary journey, a celebration of Moroccan flavors and hospitality.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Restaurant Darna Fes. The ambiance was elegant and refined, a perfect setting for a relaxing evening meal. The menu offered a range of Moroccan and international dishes, catering to every palate. I chose a seafood dish, grilled to perfection and served with a side of saffron-infused rice. Hans, craving something familiar, ordered a steak, cooked to his liking and accompanied by crispy fries. Saoirse, feeling adventurous, tried a traditional Moroccan pastry, which she declared was the perfect ending to a perfect meal.

To cap off our day, we ventured to Bar Café Dalila for a nightcap. The bar had a lively and welcoming vibe, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. I ordered a mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality, while Hans enjoyed a local beer. Saoirse, sipping on a refreshing juice, was captivated by the live music, a blend of traditional Moroccan tunes and contemporary beats. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. As we sat there, soaking in the atmosphere, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Fes with my family.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Viewpoint Medina, Dar al-Magana (Water Clock), and Bab Dekkakin. I am particularly excited about Dar al-Magana, as I read about its fascinating history and unique architectural design. It will be another day of exploration, discovery, and creating lasting memories. I am also looking forward to visiting Cooperative Artisanal de Fes for some local shopping.

Fes, with its vibrant colors, rich history, and warm hospitality, has truly captured my heart. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where every corner holds a new surprise, and where every experience is a feast for the senses. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I am also very happy that we managed to visit Fes during the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, which runs until today. The festival features artists from various spiritual and musical backgrounds, celebrating diversity and cultural understanding. The theme for this year is “RENAISSANCES,” reflecting Morocco's cultural renewal and the festival's commitment to rejuvenating ancient musical traditions. The festival takes place in various venues throughout the city's medina, adding to the city's vibrant atmosphere.

Until tomorrow!
