Today was a sensory explosion! Fes truly came alive for me, offering a captivating blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and delicious food. It was a day of wandering, discovering, and simply soaking in the atmosphere of this remarkable city. From the bustling heart of the medina to panoramic views from ancient tombs, Fes revealed its many layers, leaving me utterly enchanted.



Our day began with breakfast at La Breva. It was a charming spot, and the Moroccan breakfast was amazing! Saoirse loved the pastries. I opted for the traditional oats harcha, which was a delightful experience. Hans enjoyed his coffee, as always. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring Fes. The weather in Fes in May is pleasant, with daytime highs often reaching around 25 to 30°C. It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater for evening outings.

After breakfast, we dove headfirst into the heart of the Fes el Bali, starting with Talaa Kebira. This main street pulsated with life. We strolled along, taking in the sights and sounds. Saoirse was particularly fascinated by the handcrafted leather goods and the vibrant textiles. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs, small treasures to remind me of this unforgettable journey. Hans, ever the practical one, made sure we didn't get too carried away with our purchases, reminding us of our limited luggage space. The street was bustling with shoppers, artisans, and donkeys carrying goods – a true reflection of the city's vibrant energy. I could have spent hours simply wandering and observing, but we had a schedule to keep, and Bab Boujloud was calling our name.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Darna Fes. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. We sat in a traditional Moroccan setting, surrounded by intricate tilework and ornate details. It was a welcome respite from the bustling streets of the medina. The food was simply divine. We shared a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and tender meat. Saoirse, who can be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring the couscous. Hans enjoyed the mint tea, declaring it the perfect accompaniment to the meal. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like honored guests. We left feeling full, content, and ready for more adventures.

Our final stop for the day was the Marinid Tombs. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, these ancient ruins offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Fes. It was believed that members of the Marinid royal family were among its deceased dwellers. Despite their dilapidated state, the tombs exuded a sense of history and grandeur. As we stood there, gazing out at the sprawling city below, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Before dinner, we decided to relax at Zen Garden. It was a welcome escape from the intensity of the medina. The atmosphere was calm and serene, with lush greenery and soothing music. We ordered drinks and simply enjoyed the tranquility of the space. Saoirse loved the mocktails, while Hans and I savored the local beer. It was a chance to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. For dinner, we chose Restaurant Palais Lahlou. This restaurant is located in the vibrant and historic ancien médina of Fes. The restaurant's interior is adorned with intricate tile work and traditional decor, creating an inviting atmosphere that reflects the cultural heritage of the region. We indulged in a variety of authentic Moroccan dishes, from aromatic tagines to savory couscous, all prepared with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The fine decor and quiet ambiance let guests feel relaxed here.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to our riad, our hearts full of memories and our senses overloaded with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Fes. I know that in the coming days we will be visiting Fez Cooking School at Palais Amani, Nejjarine Fountain, and Borj Sud. I'm already anticipating tomorrow's cooking class, where I hope to learn the secrets of Moroccan cuisine. I'm also looking forward to exploring the Nejjarine Fountain and Borj Sud, each promising unique insights into the city's history and culture. But for now, I'm content to simply savor the memories of today, a day of discovery in the enchanting city of Fes.
