Family Adventure in the Heart of the Douro Valley
Day 10: A Farewell Toast to the Douro: Reflecting on a Week of Wonders
Join us on our final day in the Douro Valley as we savor the last drops of wine and unforgettable views before heading home.
Homeward Bound, But Hearts Full
As our Douro Valley adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared over the past ten days. This final day was a bittersweet symphony of savoring every last moment, knowing that the stunning landscapes and delightful flavors would soon be a cherished memory. But, oh, what a memory it will be!
Our last day in the Douro Valley was designed to be a gentle farewell, a series of moments to soak in the region's beauty and flavors before our journey back to Berlin. We started our day with a leisurely breakfast at Ruby Douro Cafe and Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, setting a cozy tone for our final day. Saoirse was particularly enthusiastic about the pastries, while Hans and I enjoyed planning out our day while enjoying the view of the Douro.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to Quinta das Carvalhas. The drive itself was a treat, winding through the terraced vineyards that define the Douro Valley. Upon arriving at Quinta das Carvalhas, we were immediately struck by the panoramic views. The estate is nestled on a prominent slope, offering a sweeping vista of the Douro River and the surrounding hills. The location alone is worth the visit, providing countless photo opportunities and a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.

We opted for a tour and tasting, eager to learn more about the winemaking process. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the history of the estate and the unique characteristics of the local grape varietals. I found it fascinating to hear about the traditional methods still used in conjunction with modern techniques to produce their exceptional wines.
The tasting, of course, was the highlight. We sampled a range of their Ports, each with its own distinct flavor profile. I was particularly taken with their Very Old Tawny Port, a blend of vintages primarily from 1867 with a touch of 1900. The complex notes of dried fruits, nuts, and caramel were a testament to the careful aging process. Hans, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the craftsmanship and history behind each bottle, while Saoirse enjoyed the non-alcoholic grape juice, feeling very grown-up as she swirled it in her glass.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
After Quinta das Carvalhas, we drove to Quinta da Pacheca. This estate offered a different, yet equally enchanting experience. Known for its innovative approach to wine tourism, Quinta da Pacheca boasts unique accommodations, including giant wine barrels that have been converted into cozy rooms. While we weren't staying overnight, we did explore the grounds and indulge in a delightful picnic amidst the vineyards.

The picnic was a feast for the senses. We savored local delicacies such as traditional Lamego meat cake, regional cheeses, and an assortment of Douro wines. Saoirse was thrilled with the fruit skewers and the mini “Pastel de Natas,” while Hans and I enjoyed sampling the different wines, each perfectly paired with the food. The setting was idyllic, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle hum of nature. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our Douro Valley adventure.
For lunch, we ventured to Restaurante Da Azenha. This charming spot offered traditional Portuguese cuisine in a cozy setting. The service was warm and welcoming, and the food was hearty and delicious. We savored dishes like arroz de marisco (seafood rice) and polvo à lagareiro (octopus with roasted potatoes), each bursting with authentic flavors. It was a comforting meal that felt like a warm hug, reminding me of the simple, home-cooked meals my own mother used to make back in Westport.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to make one last stop at Wine Quay Bar in Porto. Although technically not in the Douro Valley, it was the perfect spot to bid farewell to the region. Situated along the Ribeira district's waterfront, this intimate bar specializes in Portuguese wines and petiscos (small bites). We grabbed a table with a view of the Douro River and ordered a selection of local wines. The sunset over the river was breathtaking, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to our Douro Valley adventure.

For our final dinner, we chose Castas e Pratos in Peso da Régua. This restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine and elegant ambiance. The Michelin guide even recommends this restaurant. The menu featured a modern take on traditional Portuguese dishes, and we were eager to experience their culinary creations. We started with the sea scallops sealed with peas purée and dried ham and lemon, followed by the oxtail with purple onion chutney and coriander mayonnaise. For the main course, I opted for the partridge ravioli, morel and foie gras, while Hans enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak. Saoirse, always a fan of pasta, devoured her spaghetti carbonara. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier guided us through the extensive wine list, helping us choose the perfect pairings for our meal.

As we savored our final glasses of wine, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip. From the breathtaking views of the vineyards to the warmth of the local people, the Douro Valley had captured our hearts. It was a journey filled with discovery, laughter, and unforgettable memories. As an ESL teacher, I’m always looking for ways to connect with different cultures, and this trip provided the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Portuguese way of life.
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Berlin. While I’m looking forward to returning to our cozy apartment and familiar routines, a part of me will always remain in the Douro Valley. This trip has reminded me of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things in life, and cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones. As we pack our bags, I know that we’re not just taking home souvenirs, but also a renewed sense of gratitude and a deeper connection to each other.
The Douro Valley, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, has left an indelible mark on our hearts. It’s a place we’ll always remember fondly, and I have no doubt that we’ll return someday to explore more of its hidden gems. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories we’ve made and continue to share our adventures with all of you. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey!
