Family Adventure in the Heart of the Douro Valley
Day 9: Vineyards, Views, and Vintage Finds: A Day of Douro Delights
Discover the Douro Valley's charm: breathtaking viewpoints, family vineyards, and unique wine shopping experiences. A perfect day!
Chasing the Douro's Golden Light
Today was all about soaking in the Douro Valley's magic, from its stunning vistas to its family-run vineyards and, of course, its world-class wines. It's hard to believe this incredible journey with Hans and Saoirse is nearing its end, but we're determined to make every moment count. Today was a perfect blend of natural beauty and authentic local experiences.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A Ver O Douro. The views alone were enough to make it a memorable start, but the food was equally delightful. It's a charming spot, and even though the waitress didn't speak English, we managed just fine with gestures and smiles. Saoirse, ever the adventurer, even tried some local cheese, which she surprisingly enjoyed. It reminded me of our little kitchen back in Berlin, where we always try to incorporate local ingredients into our meals. The simple cheese platter was a must!
Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was the Miradouro do Imaginário. This viewpoint is shaped like a traditional rabelo boat, offering panoramic views of the Douro River and the terraced vineyards. It was a bit crowded, but the view was worth it. Saoirse was particularly excited, pretending she was steering the boat. I managed to snap some photos of Hans and Saoirse with the breathtaking scenery as a backdrop. The Douro Valley in May is simply stunning, with the vineyards in full bloom and the weather pleasantly warm.

Like an amphitheater, the protagonists of this stage are the valleys, the vineyard terraces, decorated with the unforgettable blue of the River Douro.
Next on our itinerary was Quinta do Jalloto, a family-run vineyard that has been in operation since 1873. This was an experience I was particularly looking forward to, as I always appreciate the personal touch that family businesses offer. The quinta is nestled amidst rolling hills, offering breathtaking views of the Douro River. We were greeted by António, who shared the history of his family's vineyard and their passion for winemaking. Saoirse, surprisingly engaged, asked lots of questions about the grapes and the process.

We enjoyed a tasting of their wines, including a crisp white, a delicate rosé, and a robust red. I particularly enjoyed the red, with its rich and complex flavors. Hans, ever the wine connoisseur, appreciated the nuances of each blend. Of course, we couldn't leave without purchasing a few bottles to take back home to Berlin. I am already looking forward to sharing them with our friends during one of our Irish music sessions.
For lunch, we headed to Douro In, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. We shared a few dishes, including grilled octopus and arroz de marisco (seafood rice). Saoirse opted for a simpler dish of grilled chicken, but she did try a bite of the arroz de marisco and declared it interesting. The restaurant had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely lunch. It felt like a true taste of Portugal, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Berlin.
In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Kopke Wine House. As the oldest Port wine house, founded in 1638, I was eager to explore their offerings. The shop itself was small and intimate, filled with bottles of every vintage imaginable. I spent quite some time browsing, chatting with the staff, and learning about the different types of Port wine. I finally settled on a bottle of Colheita Port from 2001 – a special treat for a special occasion. I also picked up a few smaller bottles as gifts for friends back home. I must admit, I also enjoyed the prices being a bit better than at Garrafeira Nacional in Lisbon!

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Terraçu's Restaurant for dinner. Perched high above the valley at Quinta Nova, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Douro. The setting was truly magical, with the vineyards bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. Chef André Carvalho's team did not disappoint; the food was exquisite, a modern take on traditional Portuguese flavors. I opted for a seafood dish, while Hans chose a meat option. Saoirse, again, stuck with chicken, but she did sample some of my seafood and declared it not bad. The service was impeccable, and the wine pairings were spot on.

We believe that creating wine and food is also about creating unique moments.
During dinner, we reminisced about our adventures in the Douro Valley so far. From the bustling streets of Porto to the serene beauty of the vineyards, this trip has been a feast for the senses. I am so grateful to have shared these experiences with my family. It's moments like these that make all the challenges of expat life worthwhile.
As we head into our final day tomorrow, I am already feeling a tinge of sadness. However, I am also excited to explore Quinta das Carvalhas and Quinta da Pacheca. We'll start with breakfast at Ruby Douro Cafe and Restaurant, followed by wine tasting and a relaxing lunch at Restaurante Da Azenha. And, of course, we'll end our trip with a final toast at the Wine Quay Bar. It's going to be a bittersweet farewell to this magical place.
Back at Gaia Residence, Saoirse is already fast asleep, dreaming of vineyards and rabelo boats. Hans and I are enjoying a final glass of Douro wine on the balcony, savoring the peace and quiet of the night. Tomorrow marks the end of our Douro Valley adventure, but the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of family, the beauty of nature, and the joy of discovering new cultures. As I look out at the twinkling lights of the valley, I feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. The Douro Valley, you have captured my heart.

And as I reflect on our journey, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places, it's about creating new memories and strengthening bonds with the ones you love. It's about stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown. It's about learning, growing, and becoming a more open-minded and compassionate person. And most importantly, it's about appreciating the simple things in life – a beautiful sunset, a delicious meal, a shared laugh. These are the moments that truly matter, the moments that make life worth living.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore the Douro Valley with my family. It has been an experience that I will cherish forever. And as we prepare to return to Berlin, I know that we will carry a piece of this magical place with us in our hearts.
Until tomorrow, when I share our final day in the Douro Valley...
