Discover the natural wonders of Shikoku Island with a visit to Shikoku Karst, Todoroki Falls, and the Otoyo Yone Rice Terraces.
A Day of Natural Wonders
Today was a day of immersion in the raw, untamed beauty of Shikoku's heartland. Leaving behind the more familiar coastal landscapes, we ventured inland, eager to explore the island's mountainous interior. What awaited us was a tapestry of stunning vistas, cascading waterfalls, and tranquil rice terraces that painted a vivid picture of rural Japan. It was a day that reminded me why we travel – to witness the earth's artistry and to connect with the simple rhythms of life.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kohanyu, a local spot known for its traditional Japanese fare. I enjoyed a comforting bowl of rice with miso soup and grilled fish, while Hans opted for a more adventurous dish involving local vegetables I couldn’t pronounce. Saoirse, predictably, stuck with plain rice and some fruit. Fueled up, we were ready to tackle the day’s adventures.
First on our itinerary was the Shikoku Karst. As we drove, the landscape transformed dramatically. The roads wound higher and higher, offering glimpses of verdant valleys and distant peaks. The air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Soon, the trees began to thin, revealing a landscape unlike anything I had anticipated. I couldn't help but think of County Mayo back home, with its own rugged beauty.
The Shikoku Karst is a geological marvel, a high plateau dotted with jagged limestone formations. Imagine a sea of rolling green hills punctuated by stark white rocks that jut out from the earth like ancient bones. The views were panoramic, stretching as far as the eye could see. We parked the car and took a walk along one of the many trails, the wind whipping through our hair as we gazed at the breathtaking scenery. Saoirse, of course, was in her element, scrambling over the rocks and declaring herself queen of the mountain. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the geological formations, snapping photos and reading aloud from our guidebook. The Karst extends along rolling mountains and has multiple trails with expansive panoramas of the Shikoku region and the Pacific Ocean.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that make you feel small, insignificant even, in the face of nature's grandeur.
We spent a good couple of hours exploring the Karst, breathing in the fresh mountain air and marveling at the unique landscape. It was a welcome change from the bustling cities we had visited earlier in our trip, a reminder of the simple, enduring power of nature. As we drove away, I felt a sense of peace and rejuvenation, a feeling that only comes from being surrounded by such unspoiled beauty.
Our next destination was Todoroki Falls, and I was excited to see what it held in store. After a winding drive through dense forests, we arrived at the trailhead. The path leading to the falls was lush and green, the air thick with humidity. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, building anticipation for the spectacle that awaited us.
The trail meandered alongside the river, crossing small bridges and passing moss-covered rocks. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale, a world of emerald green and sparkling water. Saoirse, predictably, wanted to explore every nook and cranny, while Hans kept a watchful eye, ever the cautious parent. I, on the other hand, was content to simply soak in the atmosphere, enjoying the cool spray on my face and the soothing sound of the water.
Finally, we reached the falls, and they were even more impressive than I had imagined. Todoroki Falls is Shikoku's largest waterfall, cascading down a rocky cliff into a crystal-clear pool below. The water thundered down with immense power, creating a cloud of mist that shimmered in the sunlight. We stood there for a long time, mesmerized by the sheer force and beauty of the falls.

We took some photos, of course, trying to capture the magic of the moment, but no picture could truly do it justice. It was an experience that had to be felt, the cool mist on your skin, the roar of the water in your ears, the sense of awe in your heart. Todoroki Falls is also one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls.
After the falls, we were all feeling a bit peckish, so we headed to Eki-mae Shokudo for lunch, which was conveniently located nearby. This charming restaurant is known for serving authentic Japanese regional cuisine. I opted for a comforting bowl of ramen, while Hans tried a local specialty involving mountain vegetables and fermented soybeans. Saoirse, predictably, stuck with plain rice and some seaweed. The food was simple but delicious, the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure. The restaurant operates daily from 7 AM to 7 PM, allowing ample time for visitors to drop by at their convenience.

Our final stop for the day was the Otoyo Yone Rice Terraces, and it was perhaps the most enchanting experience of all. As we drove, the landscape once again transformed, the mountains giving way to rolling hills covered in a patchwork of rice paddies. The terraces stretched as far as the eye could see, a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of the local farmers. Hachiune no Tanada is a unique site featuring a small Shinto shrine, Akiba Shrine, nestled amongst its rice terraces.
We parked the car and took a walk along the narrow paths that wound through the terraces. The rice plants were a vibrant green, swaying gently in the breeze. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden light over the landscape. It was a scene of utter tranquility, a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Water in Spring, the golden Rice Ears in autumn, and the superb scenery of the Four Seasons Unfolds.

As we walked, we passed local farmers tending to their crops, their faces etched with the wisdom of generations. They smiled and nodded as we passed, their eyes conveying a sense of pride and contentment. It was a reminder that even in this modern age, there are still places where people live in harmony with nature, where the rhythms of life are dictated by the seasons and the land.
The Otoyo Yone Rice Terraces were a truly magical place, a testament to the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. As we drove away, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a special place, a place that will stay with me long after we leave Shikoku.
Tonight, we are treating ourselves to dinner at Tosa Rokkon, known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I am particularly looking forward to trying some local sake. Tomorrow, we will be exploring Umpenji Temple and the Kurushima Strait Observatory, so stay tuned!

Before I turn in for the night, I must mention that I nearly forgot to pack a raincoat and a portable phone charger! Thank goodness Hans reminded me, otherwise, I would have been caught in the rain and had a dead phone. Lesson learned: always double-check your packing list!
