A Day of Myth and Earth

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through the whimsical world of Japanese folklore and the serene beauty of its agricultural heartland. It’s amazing how much variety Shikoku Island holds, and I was eager to dive into both the playful and peaceful sides of it. I packed my camera, prepped Saoirse for some spooky fun, and off we went, ready to embrace whatever adventures the day held.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Okamura in Nankoku. This cozy izakaya offered an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, including grilled meats, fresh sashimi, and seasonal specialties that highlighted the best ingredients from the region. I opted for a grilled fish set, while Hans enjoyed a hearty bowl of udon. Saoirse, ever adventurous, tried some tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette) and declared it delicious. It's these simple, authentic experiences that really make a trip special. The staff were so welcoming, making us feel right at home.
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found in the unexpected corners of the world.
After breakfast, we set off for the Yokai Village - East End in Miyoshi, Tokushima. Nestled in the serene landscapes, this village offered a unique glimpse into the captivating world of Japanese folklore. Yokai are mysterious creatures from Japanese stories, and this village was dedicated to bringing them to life. As we drove, the scenery transformed into rolling hills and lush greenery, a stark contrast to the bustling cityscapes we had left behind. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, wondering what kind of mythical beings we would encounter.

Upon arriving, we were immediately greeted by imaginative installations and sculptures that brought these mythical beings to life. Saoirse was particularly thrilled, her eyes wide with wonder as she pointed out various Yokai figures. We wandered through the village, reading about each creature's unique story and personality. From mischievous spirits to benevolent guardians, the Yokai Village was a fascinating blend of art and folklore. I even managed to capture a few photos of Saoirse posing with her favorite Yokai, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come. Hans, ever the pragmatist, enjoyed the artistry of the sculptures, appreciating the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The Yokai Village was a delightful experience for the whole family, proving that sometimes, the most unexpected places can offer the greatest surprises.Lunch today was at Tosa Rokkon in Kami, Kochi. This restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and warm, welcoming ambiance. I indulged in a multi-course meal featuring local seafood and seasonal ingredients. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Kochi's culinary delights. The staff informed me that all the ingredients were sourced locally, with even the rice being organic. I finished off the meal with a glass of freshly squeezed apple, carrot, and cabbage juice. After immersing ourselves in the world of Yokai, we drove to the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces. This breathtaking location featured a series of tiered rice paddies that cascaded down the mountainside, offering a unique perspective on the harmonious relationship between nature and agriculture. As we drove towards Motoyama, the landscape shifted once again, revealing a tapestry of green fields and verdant hills. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of earth and growing things. I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, a welcome contrast to the spooky excitement of the Yokai Village.

We parked the car and began our walk along the pathways that meandered through the terraces. The rice fields shimmered in the afternoon sun, creating a mesmerizing effect. It was planting season, and the paddies were filled with water, reflecting the sky like a series of mirrors. Saoirse was fascinated by the intricate patterns of the terraces, marveling at how the farmers had managed to cultivate such a challenging landscape. Hans, with his engineering background, appreciated the ingenuity and precision of the terraced fields. The Yoshinobu Rice Terraces are not only a feast for the eyes but also a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of rural Japan. The meticulous care that local farmers take in cultivating these fields is a testament to their dedication and respect for the land. As we walked, we saw farmers tending to their crops, their faces etched with years of hard work and wisdom. It was a humbling experience, reminding us of the importance of sustainable agriculture and the deep connection between people and the land. I captured numerous photos of the terraces, trying to capture the beauty and serenity of this unique landscape. As the sun began to set, we made our way to Takamatsu Central Shopping Street for some shopping. This bustling area is known as the longest shopping arcade in Japan, and it offered a wide variety of shops and restaurants. We strolled through the covered streets, browsing the local crafts and souvenirs. Saoirse was particularly excited to find a Hello Kitty-themed store, where she promptly picked out a few new accessories. Hans and I enjoyed sampling some local snacks, including takoyaki (octopus balls) and taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes filled with sweet bean paste). The shopping street was a vibrant mix of old and new, with traditional shops alongside modern boutiques. It was a great place to experience the energy and diversity of Takamatsu.

For dinner, we decided to try Amekaze Shokudo. Located in Nankoku, this restaurant offers diners a chance to savor authentic Japanese cuisine while enjoying stunning views of surrounding rice fields. The ambiance was both welcoming and serene, making it an ideal spot for those looking to relax after a day of exploration. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, ensuring freshness and quality in every bite. I opted for a savory rice bowl, while Hans enjoyed some delectable seasonal specialties. The friendly staff were always ready to recommend their favorites or accommodate dietary preferences, enhancing our dining experience. As we ate, we enjoyed the peaceful landscape, with the gentle rustle of rice plants creating a soothing backdrop. Tomorrow, we are off to explore Ioki Cave and Dragon Rock. Ioki Cave is supposed to be an incredible natural formation, and Dragon Rock looks like a great photo opportunity. Before that though, we're having breakfast at Hattorikun, lunch at Ombelico, and dinner at Japanese Cuisine Shiba. I am looking forward to it!

All in all, today was a fantastic exploration of Shikoku's diverse offerings.
