A Day of Contrasts

Today was a day of experiencing Ireland's diverse beauty, a blend of rugged wilderness and serene elegance. We ventured into the heart of Connemara National Park, exploring its national park and the iconic Kylemore Abbey. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, historical insights, and a deeper connection to my homeland.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Savoir Fare in Westport. I always make a point of visiting this spot whenever I'm back. It's a little slice of France in the middle of Westport, and I wanted Hans and Saoirse to experience it. We enjoyed some lovely pastries and coffee, fueling up for our day of exploration. Savoir Fare is truly amazing. It has such a cozy atmosphere, and the food is always fresh and delicious. I had the smoked salmon and Saoirse had a pastry, while Hans enjoyed a coffee. It's the perfect way to start a day of sightseeing.

After breakfast, we set off towards Connemara National Park. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape transforming into a tapestry of rolling hills, rugged mountains, and glistening lakes. I always feel a sense of pride driving through this landscape, knowing this is where I come from. The park, a sprawling expanse of natural beauty, immediately captivated us. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of heather and damp earth. We decided to tackle one of the trails, eager to immerse ourselves in the wilderness. I remember hiking here as a child, the vastness of the landscape always making me feel both insignificant and deeply connected to something ancient. I was excited to share that feeling with Saoirse and Hans.

The trails were well-maintained, but still offered a sense of adventure. Saoirse, ever the energetic explorer, bounded ahead, while Hans and I took a more leisurely pace, soaking in the views. The park was buzzing with special events and educational activities. Connemara Pony Information Sessions were held in the Pony Stables. We learned about Ireland's native pony breed. The landscape was breathtaking, with rugged mountains, serene bogs, and lush woodlands. We explored remnants of past human settlements and 4,000-year-old megalithic tombs.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After our hike, we stopped for lunch at The Oak Door. The cozy atmosphere was exactly what we needed after our trek through the park. Hans enjoyed a hearty stew, while Saoirse opted for a classic fish and chips. I decided to try their seafood chowder, a creamy concoction filled with fresh, locally sourced fish. It was the perfect comfort food on a day that, despite the sunshine, held a certain coolness in the air. I was so happy to share this experience with my family. It's important for Saoirse to connect with her Irish heritage, and what better way to do that than through food and nature?

With renewed energy, we drove towards Kylemore Abbey. The abbey, with its stunning architecture and picturesque setting on the edge of a lake, is like something out of a fairytale. I'd visited Kylemore many times as a child, but seeing it again through the eyes of my family made it feel new. The history of the abbey is fascinating, from its origins as a family home to its current role as a Benedictine monastery. We wandered through the abbey's restored rooms, learning about its rich history and the lives of those who had lived there. Saoirse was particularly fascinated by the story of Mitchell and Margaret Henry, the couple who originally built the castle.

The Victorian Walled Garden was another highlight. It was an oasis of color and tranquility. The garden, divided by a mountain stream, was meticulously maintained, showcasing a variety of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. We explored the glasshouses, the head gardener's house, and the vegetable garden, marveling at the heritage varieties of plants on display. It was a beautiful contrast to the wildness of Connemara National Park.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we made a stop at Aunty Nellie's Sweet Shop in Westport. It was a must for Saoirse, who had been eyeing it since we arrived in town. The shop was a treasure trove of sweets, with jars of colorful candies lining the shelves. Saoirse, of course, was in heaven, carefully selecting a mix of old favorites and new discoveries. I picked up a few traditional Irish sweets for myself, nostalgic reminders of my own childhood. We all left with bags full of sugary treats, promising ourselves we'd ration them out over the next few days.

For dinner, we decided on Cronin's Sheebeen, a traditional Irish pub known for its seafood. The pub was cozy and inviting, with a lively atmosphere and the smell of peat fire in the air. We ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh oysters, hake, and mussels. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, with good food, good company, and a taste of authentic Irish hospitality. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. Saoirse even tried her hand at speaking a few words of Gaelic, much to the amusement of the locals.

As we drove back to The Wyatt Hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. Tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Achill Island and Mulranny Beach. I've heard Achill Island is stunning, with dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches. I am excited to explore another part of County Mayo and share its beauty with Hans and Saoirse. I am especially looking forward to seeing Mulranny Beach, as I've heard it's a great spot for a walk and offers stunning views of Clew Bay. Perhaps we'll even try our hand at some watersports, if the weather permits. I'm also planning to stop by The Old Grainstore Westport for a drink in the evening, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

I am so grateful for these opportunities to reconnect with my roots and create lasting memories with my family. Ireland, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, always has a way of rejuvenating my soul. I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow brings.

I'm also reminded of how much I miss the simple pleasures of life in Westport. The friendly faces, the cozy pubs, the stunning scenery – it all holds a special place in my heart. While Berlin is now my home, a part of me will always belong to this charming town on the west coast of Ireland. And I am so glad to be able to share it with my family.

As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories with my family. Ireland, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, always has a way of rejuvenating my soul. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.

I think this trip has really emphasized how important it is to me that Saoirse understands her Irish heritage. It's more than just knowing where you come from; it's about feeling a connection to the land, the people, and the culture. And I hope that this trip has instilled in her a sense of pride in her Irish roots, something that she can carry with her wherever life takes her.
