Explore Achill Island's rugged beauty and Mulranny Beach's serene landscapes. A day of Irish adventures you won't forget!
Chasing the Horizon: Achill Island and Mulranny's Embrace
Today was a day of breathtaking vistas and tranquil moments as we ventured out to Achill Island and Mulranny Beach. The rugged landscapes and serene shores offered a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, creating memories that I know our family will cherish for years to come. It was a day where the wild beauty of Ireland truly captured our hearts, and I couldn't wait to share it all with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Friends Bistro in Westport. Saoirse was particularly excited, having heard me rave about their vegan options. I opted for their vegetarian breakfast, which can easily be made vegan, while Hans enjoyed the traditional Irish breakfast. Saoirse chose the vegan burger, and declared it the best she’d ever had! Fueled up and ready for adventure, we set off towards Achill Island. The drive itself was stunning, with rolling green hills and picturesque villages dotting the landscape. I always feel a sense of coming home whenever I drive these roads, remembering childhood trips with my own family. As we approached Achill, the landscape transformed into something even more dramatic, with rugged cliffs and expansive skies.
Our first stop was Achill Island, a place I’d always dreamed of sharing with my family. We drove along the Atlantic Drive, a coastal route that offered panoramic views of the island's dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters. Saoirse was glued to the window, exclaiming at every turn. Hans, ever the photographer, was in his element, capturing the stunning scenery.
The beauty of Achill Island lies not just in its landscapes, but in the sense of peace and connection it evokes within you.
We made our way to Keem Bay, a secluded beach nestled between towering cliffs. The scene was simply breathtaking. The golden sands met the crystal-clear waters, creating a picture-perfect setting. Saoirse immediately ran towards the water, eager to dip her toes in the Atlantic. Hans and I followed, and soon we were all paddling in the refreshing sea.
After our invigorating dip, we decided to explore the area further. We took a short hike along the cliffs, marveling at the dramatic coastline. The views were simply incredible, with the vast expanse of the Atlantic stretching out before us. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for the natural beauty that surrounded us. Achill is a place that truly captures the spirit of Ireland, wild and untamed, yet incredibly inviting.
By lunchtime, we were all feeling peckish. We found a lovely little cafe in Keel, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch of fresh seafood and hearty sandwiches. The cafe had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel before our next adventure.
After lunch, we decided to visit Mulranny Beach, another gem along the Mayo coastline. The drive from Achill to Mulranny was just as scenic, with stunning views of Clew Bay and its many islands. Mulranny Beach is known for its expansive stretch of golden sand and its tranquil atmosphere. It's a Blue Flag beach, meaning it meets high standards for cleanliness and water quality.
As we arrived at Mulranny, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the beach. Saoirse was thrilled to see the vast expanse of sand, and she immediately started building a sandcastle. Hans and I took a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, enjoying the gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves. Mulranny Beach is a place where you can truly relax and unwind, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Mulranny Beach is approximately 30km from Westport, and is a popular beach for relaxing, swimming, walking, windsurfing and kayaking. Enjoy magical views across Clew Bay towards Clare Island. After our beachside stroll, we decided to treat ourselves to some delicious pizza at Gracy's Pizzeria & Bistro for lunch. Located on the grounds of Westport House, it was the perfect spot to grab a bite before heading back to town. The atmosphere was lively and family-friendly, and the pizza was absolutely delicious. Saoirse enjoyed her vegan pizza, while Hans and I savored the local flavors. [Gracy's Pizzeria & Bistro Westport reviews]
As evening approached, we made our way back to Westport, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated by our day of coastal adventures. Before heading back to The Wyatt Hotel, we decided to stop at The Old Grainstore for a pint of Guinness. The pub was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We found a cozy corner by the fireplace and enjoyed the traditional Irish music session that was underway. It was the perfect way to end our day, soaking in the local culture and enjoying the craic.
The Old Grainstore, recently crowned Pub of the Year 2024, is famed for its friendly staff, stunning interiors, and impressive selection of over 150 premium Irish whiskeys. The building dates back to the late 1800s and was originally a pub and working grain store. After careful restoration, it's now a must-visit in Westport. [The Old Grainstore Westport reviews]
For dinner, we decided to try The Everest Restaurant, known for its Indian and Nepalese cuisine. I was curious to see how it compared to the Indian restaurants in Berlin. We ordered a variety of dishes, including chicken tikka, biryani, and a vegetarian curry. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, and the service was excellent. Saoirse even tried a bit of the curry and declared it delicious! It was a delightful culinary experience that added a touch of spice to our day. [The Everest Restaurant Westport reviews]
As we walked back to The Wyatt Hotel, under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had experienced. From the rugged beauty of Achill Island to the tranquil shores of Mulranny Beach, we had immersed ourselves in the natural wonders of County Mayo. It was a day filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories. As I tucked Saoirse into bed, I knew that this was a day we would all cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our trip. We plan to take a Westport Walking Tour to delve deeper into the town's history and visit St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church, a local landmark. We'll have breakfast at The Gallery Cafe, Wine & Tapas Bar, lunch at The Towers Bar & Restaurant Westport, and a farewell dinner at The Clock Tavern. We also plan to do some shopping at Westport Design to bring home some souvenirs. It’s bittersweet, but I’m determined to make the most of our last day here in my beloved Westport.
