Solo Adventure in Enchanting Sintra
Day 7: Discovering Sintra's Secrets: Initiation Wells and Mystical Views
Unveiling the mysteries of Sintra's Initiation Well, exploring Quinta da Regaleira, and enjoying panoramic views from the High Cross.
Farewell, Sintra!
As my solo adventure in Sintra draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past week with a mix of contentment and a tinge of melancholy. Sintra, with its mystical aura and enchanting landscapes, has truly captured my heart. Today, I planned to delve even deeper into its mysteries before heading back to Berlin, hoping to carry a piece of its magic with me.
My final day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Pic Nic I.
It's become a comforting ritual, and I savored every bite of my meal, knowing it was my last in this charming town. The air was crisp, and the promise of another day of exploration filled me with excitement. January in Sintra continues to be mild, with temperatures hovering around 57°F (14°C), making it perfect for walking and discovering hidden gems.
After a hearty meal, I set off to Quinta da Regaleira, eager to explore the famed Initiation Well.

The Initiation Well, or Poço Iniciático, is more than just a well; it’s a subterranean tower steeped in mystery and symbolism.
As I descended the winding staircase, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The air grew cooler, and the sounds of the outside world faded away, replaced by a profound silence. The well is said to have been used for initiation rites, and as I walked deeper, I imagined the countless souls who had embarked on a similar journey, seeking enlightenment and transformation. The architecture is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles, reflecting esoteric beliefs and Masonic influences.
The nine levels of the well are believed to represent the nine circles of Hell, Purgatory, or Heaven, as described by Dante in *The Divine Comedy*. Reaching the bottom, I took a moment to appreciate the intricate carvings and the sense of accomplishment that came with completing the descent.
It's a truly unique and awe-inspiring place, and I felt a deep connection to the history and mystery that permeated the air.
The journey inward is as profound and transformative as any outward exploration.
Emerging from the depths of the Initiation Well, I felt a renewed sense of wonder.
The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, and I was grateful for the opportunity to explore such a unique and enigmatic place. From there, I ventured towards the Torre da Regaleira, drawn by its imposing presence and the promise of panoramic views.

The Torre da Regaleira, while perhaps not as widely known as the Initiation Well, is an equally impressive structure.
Climbing the tower, I was rewarded with breathtaking views of the Quinta da Regaleira and the surrounding landscape. The tower itself is a marvel of architecture, with intricate stonework and a sense of grandeur that befits its surroundings.
From the top, I could see the Pena Palace perched high on the hill, the Moorish Castle standing guard over the town, and the vast expanse of the Sintra Mountains stretching towards the horizon. It was a perfect vantage point to appreciate the beauty and majesty of Sintra.
Saoirse would have loved this, I thought, as she always enjoyed high vantage points. I made a mental note to bring Hans and Saoirse here someday soon.
After soaking in the views from the Torre da Regaleira, I decided to make my way to the High Cross, Cruz Alta, the highest point in the Sintra Mountains.

The walk was invigorating, and the air was filled with the scent of pine and eucalyptus. As I ascended, the views became even more spectacular, with glimpses of the Atlantic coast in the distance. The High Cross itself is a simple yet powerful monument, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and perseverance.
Standing at the summit, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The world stretched out before me, and I was reminded of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.
Before leaving Sintra, I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind me of my trip.
I stopped by Casa Vidi, a charming shop in the heart of town, and browsed their selection of local crafts and artisanal goods.

I found a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting the Pena Palace, as well as a small bottle of locally produced wine. These treasures would serve as tangible reminders of my time in Sintra, and I knew they would bring a smile to my face whenever I looked at them.
For lunch, I enjoyed a delightful meal at A Praça, a vegetarian restaurant known for its fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I savored every bite of my meal, knowing that it was my last taste of Sintra's culinary delights. I opted for their menu, which is about 16€ per person and includes two courses, a dessert and unlimited water or tea, which is a great deal. The food was delicious, and I left feeling satisfied and content. It's a perfect spot for those seeking vegetarian and vegan options, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Sintra.
Everything is homemade and they are super kind when explaining the ingredients, which is great if you have any food restrictions.
My final dinner in Sintra was at Sabores de Sintra, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Portuguese cuisine.

Located in a historic building in São Pedro, the restaurant exuded charm and elegance. I indulged in a hearty meal of grilled fish, accompanied by a glass of local wine. It was a memorable way to end my culinary journey in Sintra. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to experience authentic Portuguese flavors.
As I prepare to leave Sintra tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had here.
This solo adventure has been a journey of self-discovery, and I have learned so much about myself and the world around me. Sintra has challenged me, inspired me, and captivated me with its beauty and mystery. I leave with a heavy heart, but also with a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to continue exploring the world. I know that I will carry the memories of this trip with me always, and I look forward to returning to Sintra someday soon, perhaps with Hans and Saoirse in tow.
Until then, *adeus*, Sintra, and thank you for the memories. Berlin, here I come!
