Finding Serenity and Savoring Kyoto: Day 8
Today was a day of gentle contemplation and delightful indulgence. I set out to explore the philosophical side of Kyoto, followed by a culinary adventure that tantalized my taste buds. It was the kind of day that reminds me why I love solo travel – the freedom to wander, to ponder, and to treat myself without compromise.
The morning began with a visit to the famed Philosopher's Path. Despite it being February, and the cherry blossoms still a distant dream, the path held a quiet charm. The air was crisp, and the canal gurgled softly as I walked alongside it. I imagine it's quite different in spring, awash with pink, but there was a certain peacefulness to its winter guise that I truly appreciated. The bare branches of the cherry trees reached towards the sky like skeletal fingers, promising the beauty to come.

The Philosopher's Path, named after Nishida Kitaro, a philosopher from Kyoto University who would stroll here daily in contemplation, is a tranquil escape from the bustling city. I found myself reflecting on my own life, my move to Berlin, my family back in Westport. It's funny how a change of scenery can bring things into sharper focus. I even composed a mental email to Hans, detailing some of the more amusing moments of the trip so far, promising to bring him back some special Kit Kats.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the quiet moments of reflection it inspires.
I continued along the path until I reached Nanzen-ji Temple. The sheer scale of the Sanmon Gate was breathtaking. It's one of the largest wooden gates in Japan, and standing beneath it, looking up at its imposing structure, I felt a sense of awe. I paid the small fee to climb to the top and was rewarded with a panoramic view of Kyoto. The city sprawled before me, a tapestry of rooftops and temples, framed by the distant mountains. It was a perfect spot for a moment of quiet contemplation. I could almost picture Nishida Kitaro doing the same, lost in thought as he gazed upon his city.

After soaking in the views, I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the Suirokaku Aqueduct. This brick structure, built during the Meiji era, is an unexpected sight within the temple complex. The aqueduct, part of the Lake Biwa Canal, is a testament to Kyoto's ingenuity and its blend of tradition and modernity. The sound of water flowing through the aqueduct added to the serene atmosphere.
By this point, my stomach was beginning to rumble, so I decided to indulge in some of Kyoto's renowned cuisine. I had heard whispers of Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION, and my curiosity, and appetite, got the better of me. I managed to secure a reservation, and I'm so glad I did. The restaurant was an experience in itself. I was seated at a counter overlooking a large teppan hot plate, where a personal chef stood ready to work his magic.

I opted for the Kobe sirloin tasting menu, and it was worth every penny. Each element, from the soup to the salad, was meticulously prepared with ingredients sourced from Kyoto. The chef expertly grilled the beef right in front of me, explaining each cut and its unique characteristics. The Kobe filet was exquisite and melted in my mouth. It truly was a culinary experience. Even though I am not a big meat eater, but the quality was undeniable. I made a mental note to tell Hans about it, as I know he would love it.
After such a decadent meal, I felt the need to walk it off, so I decided to explore some of the local shops. I stumbled upon Kyo-komono Kinugasa, a charming little shop selling traditional Kyoto crafts. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Saoirse. I know she will love the little trinkets. The shop was filled with beautiful accessories made with Kyoto printed silk and Nishijin silk fabrics. I was particularly drawn to the hexagon-shaped “nejiiri-bako” box, made with Nishijin silk gold brocade. It was so delicate and beautiful, and I knew Saoirse would adore it.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made a stop at Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store, a pop-up shop dedicated to Kyoto Animation. As someone who appreciates Japanese animation, I couldn't resist taking a look. The store was filled with merchandise from all of Kyoto Animation's series, including *Haruhi Suzumiya*, *K-ON!*, *Sound! Euphonium*, and *Violet Evergarden*. I picked up a small Violet Evergarden keychain for myself, a reminder of my time in Kyoto and the beauty of Japanese animation. The shop is a treasure trove for any anime enthusiast, showcasing the studio's dedication to quality and artistry.

As I walked back to the Park Hotel Kyoto, I reflected on the day. It had been a perfect blend of culture, contemplation, and culinary indulgence. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and the Kyoto International Manga Museum. I think Saoirse would love the Manga Museum, maybe I'll bring her here one day.
