Kyoto's Gentle Embrace

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a quiet Sunday spent wandering through Kyoto's serene landscapes and historic temples. It’s days like these, away from the ESL classroom in Berlin, that remind me why I need these solo adventures. They allow me to reconnect with myself and the world, finding inspiration in the simplest of moments.

My day began with a leisurely stroll through Maruyama Park. Even though it's early March, and I'm a bit ahead of the main cherry blossom rush, the park was already showing signs of the coming spring. The air was crisp, and the first blossoms were tentatively unfurling, promising the riot of pink that will soon engulf the city. I made a mental note to Saoirse that we should try to see the park in full bloom one day. The bare branches of the trees still held a stark beauty against the clear sky, and the park itself was alive with locals enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning. It was easy to see why Maruyama Park is Kyoto's most famous cherry blossom park.

I found a quiet spot near a small pond and sat for a while, simply observing. Families were picnicking, couples were strolling hand in hand, and elderly people were practicing tai chi. The scene was a microcosm of Kyoto life, a blend of tradition and modernity, of activity and stillness. I closed my eyes, listened to the gentle murmur of voices and the rustling of leaves, and felt a sense of deep contentment wash over me. It's moments like these that make traveling solo so rewarding. No compromises, no schedules, just the freedom to be present in the moment and soak it all in.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection that it invites.

After leaving Maruyama Park, I made my way to Chionin Temple, the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism. The temple complex is vast, and I spent several hours exploring its many halls and gardens. The sheer scale of the place is awe-inspiring, a testament to the power and influence of the Tokugawa shogunate, who supported the temple's reconstruction in the 17th century. The Sanmon gate, one of the largest wooden gates in Japan, is particularly impressive, looming over visitors as they approach the main grounds.

Inside the Mieido hall, I watched as monks chanted sutras, their voices echoing through the cavernous space. I don’t pretend to understand the intricacies of Pure Land Buddhism, but I found the chanting deeply moving, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition. I learned that Chionin Temple was founded by the disciples of Honen Shonin, the founder of Jodo-Shu (Pure Land Sect), to carry on his teachings following his death. The Jodo-Shu of Buddhism teaches that all people can be saved by chanting the “Namu Amida Butsu” prayer.

One of the highlights of Chionin was the Uguisubari-no-rōka, the nightingale floor. As I walked along the corridor, the floorboards creaked and chirped beneath my feet, sounding like a flock of nightingales. I was told that this ingenious design was intended to warn the monks of intruders, a clever security system in a time long before alarms and cameras. I also learned about the temple's giant bell, which weighs 70 tons and requires a team of monks to ring it – a truly impressive feat of engineering and coordination.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a proper dinner. I had spotted a promising restaurant near Maruyama Park called Kyoto Japan, and I was eager to sample some authentic Kyoto cuisine. After a quick search, I found Tategami and Saishuan Shiraki, both offering Kyoto style cuisine, and I decided to check them out. The meal was a delight, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of local ingredients. I savored every bite, washing it down with a glass of sake, and reflected on the day's experiences.

Later, I thought I'd check out the Kyoto Pub for a nightcap. I remember Hans once telling me about the Irish pubs in Japan, and how they strive to maintain an authentic Irish atmosphere. It seemed like a fun way to end the day. I found several pubs with good reviews, including ZAZA PUB Kyoto and The Common One Bar Kyoto, but ended up at Dublin, Kyoto: Apparently, it's an Irish pub. It had the kind of atmosphere I was looking for, a place where I could relax, enjoy a good pint, and maybe even strike up a conversation with some locals or fellow travelers.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kodaiji Temple and Kenninji Temple. I'm particularly interested in Kenninji, as it is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at mumokuteki goods & wears Kyoto. It promises to be another day filled with cultural exploration and quiet contemplation.

Back at the Park Hotel Kyoto, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this solo journey. It's not always easy traveling alone, but the rewards are immeasurable. The freedom to explore at my own pace, to follow my instincts, and to immerse myself fully in the local culture is something I wouldn't trade for anything. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that Kyoto had once again worked its magic, leaving me feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply connected to the world.

The Higashiyama Hanatoro Festival is held each year in March, transforming Maruyama Park and the surrounding area into an illuminated wonderland. Dotted with thousands of lanterns, the festival makes for a stunning walk and an ideal way to explore the park. I'll be sure to check it out if I'm still here!
