A Fond Farewell to Kanazawa

As our two-week adventure in Kanazawa draws to a close, today was a day of reflection, savoring the last moments in this enchanting city. With Maximilian and Linnea by my side, we set out to explore a few hidden gems and revisit some favorite spots, aiming to etch Kanazawa deeper into our hearts. It's amazing how a place can feel like home in such a short time, and I already know we'll be back.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. This charming café, with its Seattle-inspired ambiance, was the perfect spot to start our day. I ordered my usual soy latte, while Maximilian enjoyed a cappuccino, and Linnea devoured a delicious pastry. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service always made us feel welcome, and it was a lovely way to ease into our final day.

After breakfast, we decided to explore Kuragarizaka, or Dark Slope, a hidden alleyway with a fascinating history. Tucked away behind a shrine in the Kazuemachi district, this narrow stone staircase was once used by wealthy shopkeepers seeking discreet access to the teahouses. As we walked down the dimly lit path, I imagined the secrets and stories this slope could tell. It was a unique and atmospheric experience, offering a glimpse into Kanazawa's past. Linnea was especially intrigued by the name, whispering about shadows and mysteries as we descended the steps.

Next on our itinerary was Shin-maru Hiroba, a serene park located within the Kanazawa Castle grounds. This open space offers stunning views of the castle and surrounding gardens, providing a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. We took a leisurely stroll through the park, admiring the meticulously maintained greenery and the imposing architecture of the castle. Linnea enjoyed running around the grassy area, while Maximilian and I soaked in the tranquil atmosphere. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, reflecting on our time in Kanazawa and the memories we had created.

After our peaceful interlude at Shin-maru Hiroba, it was time for lunch. We headed to The Godburger, a local favorite known for its delicious burgers and cozy atmosphere. Maximilian had been craving a good burger, and this place did not disappoint. I opted for the vegetarian burger, which was surprisingly flavorful and satisfying. Linnea, of course, chose the classic cheeseburger with a side of fries. The Godburger is a small restaurant, but we managed to get a table and savored every bite of our meal. It was a fun and casual dining experience, a perfect contrast to some of the more traditional meals we had enjoyed during our stay.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some local crafts and visited Kanazawa Katani, a gold leaf shop with over a century of history. Kanazawa is famous for its gold leaf, and this shop offered a unique opportunity to learn about the craft and even try our hand at applying it. We selected small wooden boxes and, with the help of the staff, carefully applied delicate gold leaf to create our own unique souvenirs. Linnea was particularly fascinated by the process, meticulously placing each piece of gold leaf with intense concentration. It was a memorable and creative experience, a perfect way to connect with Kanazawa's artistic heritage.

As the day drew to a close, we had one final culinary experience to look forward to: dinner at Teppanyaki makibi san-an. This teppanyaki restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with chefs cooking delicious dishes right in front of us on a sizzling iron plate. We opted for the Wagyu beef course, and it was an absolute delight. The chef expertly prepared each dish, explaining the ingredients and cooking techniques with precision and flair. The aroma of the grilling meat filled the air, and the flavors were simply divine. It was a luxurious and unforgettable meal, a perfect way to celebrate our last night in Kanazawa.

Reflecting on our two weeks in Kanazawa, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we have shared as a family. From the serene gardens to the bustling markets, from the historic districts to the modern museums, Kanazawa has captivated our hearts and minds. It is a city that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation, offering something for everyone. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that we will carry the memories of Kanazawa with us, cherishing the moments we have spent together in this beautiful city. I’m already looking forward to planning our next visit, perhaps in a different season to experience a new facet of Kanazawa's charm. The bullet train awaits, but Kanazawa, you will not be forgotten. The charm of this city, nestled between the mountains and the sea, will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Until next time, sayōnara!
