Exploring Kyoto: A Cultural and Historical Adventure with Friends
Day 6: A Stroll Through Serenity: Discovering Kyoto's Hidden Gems
Today, I wandered along the Philosopher's Path and explored Nanzen-ji, immersing myself in Kyoto's serene beauty and rich history.
Finding Peace on the Philosopher's Path
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to slow down and truly soak in the atmosphere of Kyoto. Leaving behind the bustling city streets, I ventured into a world of tranquil paths, ancient temples, and the soothing sounds of nature. It was a day to reconnect with myself and appreciate the simple beauty that Kyoto so readily offers.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. It’s a small, intimate restaurant, and I was so glad we made a reservation. Miho and Patrick, the owners, were incredibly welcoming, and the food was a delightful introduction to traditional Japanese flavors. I opted for the vegetarian menu, and each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to contemplation and exploration.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I, along with my friends, set out for the Philosopher's Path. This route is a stone path that follows a canal lined with cherry trees. Though the peak bloom has passed, there were still plenty of blossoms to admire, their delicate petals creating a pink carpet on the water's surface. The path got its name from Nishida Kitaro, a Kyoto University professor who would meditate while walking this route. It’s easy to see why he chose this place for contemplation; the gentle flow of the canal, the rustling of leaves, and the soft sunlight filtering through the trees create a truly peaceful atmosphere.

As we strolled along the path, I thought about my own life back in Heidelberg. I pictured Maximilian at his computer, probably deep in code, and Linnea playing in our garden. I missed them both dearly, but I also knew that this trip was important for me. It was a chance to reconnect with myself, to find inspiration, and to bring back new perspectives to my family.
Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of our world, where the whispers of history and nature intertwine.
The Philosopher's Path led us to Nanzen-ji Temple, a sprawling Zen paradise nestled against the lush green hills of Kyoto's Higashiyama district. Nanzen-ji is one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples. The temple was originally built as a retirement villa for Emperor Kameyama in the 13th century, before being converted into a temple. We entered through the imposing Sanmon Gate, a massive wooden structure that seemed to guard the entrance to a sacred realm. For a small fee, you can climb to the top of the gate and enjoy panoramic views of the temple grounds and surrounding city. The gate was built in 1628 to commemorate warriors killed during the siege of Osaka.

Wandering through the temple complex, I was struck by the sense of harmony and balance. The meticulously raked gravel gardens, the moss-covered stones, and the ancient trees all seemed to exist in perfect equilibrium. We paused at the Hojo, the main hall, to admire the exquisite paintings by Kano Tanyu and Kano Eitoku, masters of the Kano school of art. The sliding doors and screens were adorned with images of tigers, dragons, and landscapes, each brushstroke conveying a sense of power and grace.
One of the most unexpected sights at Nanzen-ji was the Suirokaku Aqueduct, a brick structure built in the Meiji era to transport water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. The aqueduct's Roman-style arches seemed incongruous in the midst of a traditional Japanese temple, yet it added a unique and fascinating element to the landscape. Walking beneath the arches, I could hear the rush of water overhead, a reminder of the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the past.
After exploring the main complex, we ventured into some of Nanzen-ji's sub-temples, each with its own distinct character and charm. Tenjuan Temple, with its beautiful rock gardens and serene atmosphere, was a particular favorite. We also visited Nanzen-in, the original site of Emperor Kameyama's villa, and Konchi-in, known for its stunning autumn foliage. I found myself reflecting on the impermanence of things, the way that empires rise and fall, and the enduring power of nature to reclaim even the most magnificent creations.
As evening approached, we made our way to Kikunoi Roan for a Kaiseki dinner. The restaurant is renowned for its exquisite multi-course meals that showcase the finest seasonal ingredients and traditional culinary techniques. Each dish was a miniature work of art, carefully crafted to delight both the eye and the palate. The flavors were subtle yet complex, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a celebration of Japanese gastronomy and artistry.

After dinner, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We headed to Kyoto Star Bar, known for its innovative cocktails and stylish atmosphere. The bar was tucked away in a quiet alley, creating a sense of intimacy and exclusivity. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, made with local gin and a blend of traditional Japanese botanicals. The drink was expertly crafted, the flavors perfectly balanced and the presentation elegant. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and contemplation.

As I sipped my cocktail, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. We are planning to visit Heian Shrine and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I am particularly excited about Heian Shrine, with its striking architecture and beautiful gardens. I am also looking forward to strolling through Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, the former site of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Before that, we have reservations for breakfast at Hafuu, followed by lunch at Sakuragawa. And for dinner, we’re booked at Gion Mikaku. Before heading back to the Ryokan, we will probably visit Kazari Nishiki, a shop.
Back at the Kyoto Watazen Ryokan, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Today had been a perfect blend of exploration, contemplation, and indulgence. I had walked in the footsteps of philosophers, marveled at ancient temples, savored exquisite cuisine, and sipped expertly crafted cocktails. Kyoto had once again worked its magic, leaving me feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply connected to the beauty and serenity of this remarkable city.

The hot bath was exactly what I needed to unwind before bed. As I soaked in the warm water, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, the exquisite Kaiseki dinner, and the innovative cocktails at Kyoto Star Bar had all contributed to a day of perfect harmony. I drifted off to sleep with a smile on my face, eager to see what tomorrow would bring.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to buy a portable phone charger. It would definitely come in handy tomorrow!
