Finding Serenity and Stories in Kyoto

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of the ancient and the modern that only a city like Kyoto can offer. From the serene halls of a temple filled with a thousand statues to the colorful stacks of a manga museum, it was a journey through different facets of Japanese culture. I find myself constantly amazed by how seamlessly Kyoto weaves together its rich history with its vibrant contemporary scene.

Our day began, as many do, with a quest for the perfect breakfast. Alice On Wednesday was the chosen spot, a whimsical cafe that, as the name suggests, is themed around Alice in Wonderland. It felt a bit like stepping into a storybook, with quirky decor and treats that were almost too cute to eat. I couldn't help but think of Linnea as I sipped my tea, imagining her eyes wide with wonder at the Mad Hatter-esque setting. It's these little moments of connection that make traveling with friends so special, even when our families are far away.

Fueled and ready, we headed to Sanjusangendo Temple. The name, meaning Hall with Thirty-Three Spaces Between Columns, hints at the architectural marvel within. But nothing can truly prepare you for the sight of the 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Each statue, crafted centuries ago, has a unique expression, a testament to the skill and artistry of the sculptors. The sheer scale of the hall, the longest wooden structure in Japan, is breathtaking, but it's the collective presence of those golden figures that leaves a lasting impression.

The temple was a reminder that even in the most chaotic of times, there is always a place for peace, for reflection, and for the quiet contemplation of beauty.

Photography wasn't allowed inside, a rule I initially lamented, but later appreciated. It forced me to truly observe, to soak in the atmosphere without the distraction of trying to capture the perfect shot. Instead, I focused on the details: the gentle curve of a hand, the serene gaze of an eye, the intricate folds of a robe. It was a meditative experience, a chance to quiet my mind and connect with something larger than myself. I found myself thinking about the importance of preserving these cultural treasures, not just as historical artifacts, but as sources of inspiration and solace for generations to come.

After the tranquility of Sanjusangendo, we plunged into the vibrant world of the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum is a celebration of all things manga, with shelves upon shelves of comics, exhibits on the history of the art form, and even live drawing demonstrations. It was a fascinating contrast to the temple, a reminder that culture is not static, but constantly evolving and reinventing itself.

I was particularly intrigued by the international section, which showcased manga from around the world. It was fascinating to see how different cultures have embraced and adapted this uniquely Japanese art form. I even found a few Swedish comics, a nostalgic reminder of home. My friends teased me relentlessly as I poured over them, but I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in seeing my native culture represented on a global stage.

Lunch at Fujiya was a delightful experience. This Ryokan is located near Kyoto Station. The staff was very kind and the rooms comfy. We even saw the Ryokan's adorable cat. The location was excellent, with easy access to many public transportation options. The owner was exceptionally welcoming and helpful, making our time in Kyoto wonderful.

As evening approached, we ventured out in search of dinner, ending up at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant itself was an experience, with only ten counter seats offering a front-row view of the chefs at work. Each dish was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients. The sake was sweet, clean and light.

The chef, Takatomo Izumi-san, clearly has a passion for his craft, and his dedication to using only the finest ingredients was evident in every bite. It was a meal to remember, a true culinary journey that left us feeling both satisfied and inspired. I made a mental note to try Godan Miyazawa, the sister restaurant run by chef-owner Masato Miyazawa, on my next visit.

To cap off the night, we decided to check out Concrete Bar, a hidden gem recommended by a local we met at the Manga Museum. It was a bit tricky to find, tucked away in a narrow alley, but the search was well worth it. The bar had a cool, intimate vibe, with a friendly owner and staff who made us feel right at home. The drinks were reasonably priced, and the atmosphere was perfect for relaxing and unwinding after a long day of exploring. I even befriended A-kun, a college student who works part-time at a Korean Cuisine restaurant.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences Kyoto has to offer. From the spiritual to the whimsical, the ancient to the modern, there's something here for everyone. And while I cherish the grand sights and historical landmarks, it's often the small, unexpected moments that stay with me the longest: a shared laugh with friends, a quiet moment of reflection in a temple, a chance encounter with a local. These are the moments that make travel so enriching, so transformative.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Kodaiji Temple and wander through the charming streets of Sannenzaka. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us, what new stories we'll uncover in this captivating city. And who knows, maybe I'll even find the perfect souvenir to take back home to Linnea, a little piece of Kyoto magic to share with my family.

I must remember to buy a portable phone charger, as I forgot it at our Ryokan!
