Family Adventure to the Majestic Geirangerfjord
Day 6: Chasing Views and Thrills in Geiranger: A Day of Swings and Serenity
Experience Geiranger's charm with family: breathtaking views from Blair's Viewpoint, swinging adventures, and cozy dining by the fjord.
Swinging into Geiranger's Heart
Today was a day of embracing the playful side of Geiranger, mixed with moments of serene contemplation. It’s funny how a simple swing can bring so much joy, but the Geiranger Schaukel was more than just a swing; it was an experience. We balanced the day with stunning viewpoints and the soothing sounds of the Geirangerelva river, creating memories that I know our family will cherish.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Naustkroa Restaurant. Maximilian opted for the kjøttkaker (meatballs), a classic Norwegian dish, while Linnea insisted on pizza. I chose the laks (salmon), wanting to start the day with something fresh and local. It was a cozy start, the kind that sets the tone for a day of exploration. The weather was a bit unpredictable, with a mix of rain and snow showers. I was glad I had packed layers, even though I forgot my raincoat back in Heidelberg! I made a mental note to buy one tomorrow when we visit the Norwegian Fjord Centre [see Itinerary of Tomorrow].
After breakfast, we set off to find the famous Geiranger Schaukel. The swing is located a short walk from the waterfall, and I will admit that it wasn't clearly marked, and we ended up walking around for a while. The crisp air was invigorating, and the landscape was just stunning. I could see why so many people are drawn to this place. When we finally found the swing, Linnea was ecstatic! The Geiranger Schaukel is essentially a swing hanging off the edge of a cliff, offering breathtaking views of the Geirangerfjord. It was a bit daunting at first, but once I sat on it and felt the rush of swinging with that view in front of me, it was exhilarating. Linnea was giggling the whole time, shouting, Again, Mama, again! Maximilian captured some wonderful photos, though I think he was secretly relieved to stay firmly on the ground.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of moments, like a swing with a view that takes your breath away.
Next on our list was the Geirangerelva river. We followed the path alongside the river, listening to the water cascade over the rocks. The Geirangerelva is a beautiful waterway that flows through the heart of Geiranger, emptying into the Geirangerfjord. The river is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful escape. Linnea enjoyed throwing little pebbles into the water, watching them disappear into the current. Maximilian, ever the thoughtful one, pointed out the diverse flora and fauna, explaining the importance of preserving such natural beauty. I was just happy to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.

Our afternoon was dedicated to Blair's View Point. The drive there was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the fjord. When we arrived at Blair's View Point, the panorama was breathtaking. The Geirangerfjord stretched out before us, framed by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. It was easy to see why this spot is so popular. The viewpoint offered a sweeping vista of the fjord, with its dramatic cliffs, serene waters, and the occasional cruise ship gliding by. Linnea was fascinated by the tiny boats, imagining them as her toy ships sailing on a giant bathtub. I took several photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice.

For lunch, we decided to try Låna Bistro. It had been known as Friaren Bistro, but changed its name in 2020. The Bistro offered a charming atmosphere with a sunny outdoor seating area. We enjoyed a delightful meal of traditional Norwegian dishes, savoring the local flavors while soaking in the stunning views. I tried the fish soup, which was hearty and flavorful, while Maximilian opted for a reindeer dish. Linnea, predictably, wanted something simple, so we got her some fries. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

As evening approached, we decided to experience Geiranger's nightlife with a visit to MILK Bar & Lounge. The place is located on an old ferry quay outside Skansekaia. I had read about MILK Bar & Lounge before our trip. Apparently, the name MILK dates back to when Skateflua was a meeting point for the delivery of milk and products from the fjord farms. It’s fascinating how places evolve, retaining echoes of their past while adapting to the present. While Maximilian and I enjoyed some local beers, Linnea was content with her juice, gazing out the glass floor and studying the life under the quay. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, a perfect way to wind down after a day of adventures. We chatted about our favorite moments of the day, Linnea already planning our activities for tomorrow.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Olebuda. The restaurant is in an old wooden house from the 1800s. The ambiance was intimate and charming, with a touch of rustic elegance. The menu featured Norwegian ingredients, and we decided to indulge in some local specialties. I ordered the sea bass, which was cooked to perfection, while Maximilian went for the venison. Linnea had a simple pasta dish, which she devoured with gusto. The service was attentive, and the food was delicious, making it a memorable end to our day.

As I sit here, writing in our cozy guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we shared today. Geiranger has a way of capturing your heart, blending adventure with serenity. Tomorrow is our last day in Geiranger, and we plan to make the most of it. We will visit Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde and take a trip with Geiranger Fjordservice AS [see Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I also want to buy that raincoat I forgot, and maybe a few souvenirs for our friends back in Heidelberg. But for now, it’s time to rest and dream of fjords and swings. It's experiences like these that make me so happy I chose to be a librarian. The job allows me the time to travel with my family.
