Family Adventure to the Majestic Geirangerfjord
Day 7: Farewell to Geiranger: Reflecting on a Week of Fjord Magic
Saying goodbye to Geirangerfjord after seven days of breathtaking scenery, family fun, and unforgettable Norwegian experiences.
A Fond Farewell to Geiranger
As our family adventure in Geirangerfjord draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, having explored this stunning corner of Norway, and a deep gratitude for the memories we've created. But there's also a pang of sadness, knowing that our time in this magical place is coming to an end. These past seven days have been nothing short of extraordinary, and I'm eager to share the highlights of our final day with you all.
Our last day in Geiranger began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at the Grande Fjord Hotel. The views from the breakfast room were, as always, breathtaking. I savored the last of the fresh Norwegian pastries, thinking about how much Linnea has enjoyed them this week. Maximilian and I sipped our coffee, making plans for our final day of exploration. We decided to take it easy and soak in as much of the fjord’s beauty as possible before heading back to Ålesund tomorrow.

First on our agenda was a visit to the Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde. This protected landscape area offered a chance to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that defines Geiranger. We drove along the winding roads, stopping frequently to capture photos of the dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. Linnea was particularly excited, pointing out every sheep and goat we passed along the way. She even spotted a few wild blueberries, which we carefully picked and enjoyed.

We parked the car and took a short hike into the landscape area, following a well-marked trail that led us to a stunning overlook. From there, we could see the entire fjord spread out before us, a tapestry of blue water and green mountains. It was a moment of pure serenity, and I felt incredibly grateful to be sharing it with my family. Maximilian, ever the photographer, snapped away, trying to capture the scene's grandeur, but some things just can't be fully captured in a photograph. They need to be experienced.
Sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the ones that take your breath away and leave you speechless.
Next, we decided to take a closer look at the fjord itself. We headed to Geiranger Fjordservice AS, where we booked a short boat tour. I remembered reading about them before the trip, and it seemed like the perfect way to say goodbye to the water. As the boat glided across the water, we were treated to even more stunning views of the Seven Sisters waterfall and the Suitor. The guide shared stories about the history and folklore of the area, adding another layer of depth to our experience. Linnea was captivated by the tales of Vikings and mythical creatures, her eyes wide with wonder.

After the boat tour, our stomachs started to rumble, so we made our way to Geiranger Brygge for lunch. This charming waterfront restaurant offered a menu of traditional Norwegian dishes, and we eagerly ordered a selection to share. The fresh seafood was particularly delicious, and we savored every bite as we watched the boats bobbing in the harbor. Linnea, surprisingly, devoured a plate of smoked salmon, declaring it her favorite food of the trip.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we strolled along the Promenada Geiranger Port. This bustling promenade was filled with tourists and locals alike, all enjoying the beautiful day. We stopped to browse the souvenir shops, picking up a few small mementos to remind us of our time in Geiranger. Linnea insisted on buying a small troll figurine, which she promptly named Fjordy.

Our final stop of the day was the Norwegian Fjord Centre. I had been looking forward to this visit all week, as I was eager to learn more about the history and geology of the fjords. The center was filled with interactive exhibits and informative displays, and we spent hours exploring its many facets. Linnea particularly enjoyed the children's section, where she could play with models of glaciers and learn about the animals that inhabit the area.

I found the exhibits on the UNESCO World Heritage status of the Geirangerfjord particularly fascinating. It was inspiring to learn about the efforts being made to preserve this natural wonder for future generations. I also appreciated the center's focus on sustainable tourism, which resonated with my own values. As a librarian, I always appreciate a well-curated collection of information, and the Norwegian Fjord Centre certainly delivered.
As evening approached, we made our way to Brasserie Posten for our final dinner in Geiranger. This cozy restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and we settled in for a relaxing meal. Maximilian and I shared a bottle of Norwegian wine, while Linnea sipped on apple juice. We reminisced about our favorite moments of the trip, laughing and sharing stories. It was the perfect way to end our adventure.

“This trip has been so magical,” I said, raising my glass. “To Geirangerfjord, and to many more family adventures to come!”
Maximilian and Linnea clinked their glasses against mine, their faces beaming. As we finished our dinner, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. We had come to Geirangerfjord seeking beauty and adventure, and we had found it in abundance. This trip had not only allowed us to explore a stunning corner of the world but had also strengthened our bonds as a family.
Back at the Grande Fjord Hotel, as I tucked Linnea into bed, she whispered, “Mommy, can we come back to Geiranger again?”
“Of course, my love,” I replied, kissing her forehead. “We’ll come back as soon as we can.”
And as I sit here now, writing this blog post, I know that I mean it. Geirangerfjord has captured a piece of my heart, and I can’t wait to return and explore its wonders again.
Our flight leaves from Ålesund tomorrow, and the drive will be scenic, I am sure. I am already thinking about our next adventure and where our travels will take us. Perhaps we will explore more of Norway. Perhaps we will visit Sweden, so I can show Linnea where I grew up. Until then, thank you for joining us on our journey!
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” I am so grateful that I get to share these adventures with my family and with all of you.
