A Solo Adventure into the Heart of Yakushima
Day 5: A Day of Cultural Immersion and Natural Splendor in Yakushima
Discover the captivating Ohko Waterfall and delve into Yakushima's rich history and folklore on an enriching solo adventure.
Whispers of Water and Echoes of the Past
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of nature's raw power and the quiet whispers of history. I set out to explore more of Yakushima's natural beauty and to delve into its cultural heart. It’s amazing how much history is infused in this island, a place where nature and human stories intertwine so seamlessly. I was eager to see what new perspectives this day would bring.
My morning began with a visit to Michikusa for breakfast. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals, and I felt immediately welcome. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The soy milk chai, made with black tea and ginger from Kagoshima, sounded equally tempting, perhaps for another morning.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards Ohko Waterfall. The drive itself was stunning, winding through dense forests with glimpses of the coastline. It’s incredible how quickly the landscape changes here – one minute you’re surrounded by towering trees, the next you catch a glimpse of the vast ocean. As I approached the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder, creating a sense of anticipation.
Ohko Waterfall is truly a sight to behold. As one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls, it certainly lives up to its reputation. The water cascades down an 88-meter cliff in two streams, creating a powerful and mesmerizing display. I walked along the rocks near the basin, feeling the cool spray on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the water. The vibrant green surroundings, teeming with unique flora and fauna, added to the waterfall's allure. It was a popular spot, even on a Wednesday, with people eager to experience its refreshing coolness during these warm summer months. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view and capturing photos of the dynamic waterfall. It's moments like these that remind me why I love wildlife photography – capturing the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After the invigorating experience at Ohko Waterfall, I decided to immerse myself in Yakushima's history and culture. I made my way to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore in Miyanoura. The museum is located close to the Miyanoura River, making it a peaceful spot to reflect on the island's past. The single-story exhibition hall is packed with artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Yakushima's people, traditions, and natural environment.
Inside, I explored exhibits detailing the island's early inhabitants, their traditional ways of life, and the unique cultural practices that have shaped Yakushima over centuries. There were displays of old tools, clothing, and household items that painted a vivid picture of daily life in the past. I was particularly interested in the exhibits relating to festivals on the island, including costumes and a rice straw rope used in a tug-of-war festival between different villages. I also learned about the island's unique relationship with the nearby volcanic island of Kuchinoerabu, which is just a short boat ride away. The museum even had exhibits on Yakushima's native monkeys and deer, which are smaller sub-species of their mainland cousins. It was fascinating to learn about the methods used in cutting down the massive Yakusugi cedar trees and the techniques of long line fishing, providing a comprehensive look at the island’s heritage. The museum also had a reconstruction of a rural house where roof tiles, known as hiragi, were made, offering a glimpse into the island’s architectural history. While most of the exhibits were labeled in Japanese, the English pamphlet provided was incredibly helpful.

Leaving the museum, I felt a deeper connection to Yakushima, understanding not just its natural wonders but also the stories of the people who have called this island home for generations.
For lunch, I decided to try Shiosai, a Japanese restaurant specializing in tempura. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Miyanoura Port and the local police station. Shiosai prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring that every bite is a delightful experience. I savored a variety of tempura options alongside other classic Japanese dishes. The attentive staff were knowledgeable about the offerings and recommended pairings with local sake, enhancing the overall dining experience. Shiosai's commitment to quality and authenticity made it a memorable culinary experience. I opted for the mackerel sashimi, a Yakushima specialty, and it was incredibly fresh and flavorful. I made sure to arrive early, as it tends to get busy during lunch hours.

In the late afternoon, I wanted to do some shopping for souvenirs, so I headed to Gramoon. It was a delightful little shop with unique fashion and local artisan crafts. I found a beautiful hand-painted scarf that I thought Liam would love. I also picked up a few small trinkets for my friends back in Banff. It’s always nice to bring back something special that captures the essence of a place.

As evening approached, I made my way to DINING CAFE BAR SLOW for dinner. The cafe serves a range of foods, including salads, soups, pasta, burgers, and seafood. What drew me in was the promise of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and handmade pasta. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for solo travelers looking to unwind. I enjoyed my meal while overlooking stunning views of the island's lush greenery. I opted for the handmade pasta, which was indeed delicious. The rustic decor and serene setting made it a perfect end to a busy day.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Yakushima's diverse offerings. From the thundering waters of Ohko Waterfall to the quiet echoes of history in the museum, every moment was a reminder of the island's unique charm.
Tomorrow, I’m planning to explore the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato” and the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. I’m particularly excited about the sea turtles, as I’ve always been fascinated by these gentle creatures. I’m also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Yakushima Airport Restaurant for breakfast and Hachiman for dinner, and perhaps stopping by Fisherman's Bar NINA for a drink in the evening. Another day of adventure awaits in this magical place. With the summer heat in full swing, I’m hoping for clear skies and great views. I'm also making a mental note to buy some insect repellent; the mosquitoes are quite persistent, and I definitely forgot to pack that essential item!
