A Fond Farewell

As my time on this enchanting island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken. Yakushima, with its ancient forests and dramatic coastlines, has left an indelible mark on my soul. Today was about soaking in the last moments, capturing the essence of this magical place before heading back to Banff. It's funny how a place can feel like home, even after just a few days. The fresh air, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the people – it all weaves together to create a sense of belonging. Today was about saying goodbye, but also about promising myself that I'd return one day.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley, a cozy little eatery near Anbo Port. The cafe was indeed aptly named, setting the tone for a day filled with smiles and fond memories. I savored a simple yet satisfying meal of freshly baked muffins and strong coffee, the perfect fuel for my last day of exploration. It was a great place to start the day and I could see myself spending hours there, enjoying the view and the atmosphere.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the World Heritage Listed Coastal Road with Wildlife. The drive along the western coast of Yakushima was nothing short of spectacular. The road wound its way through lush forests, hugging the rugged coastline, with breathtaking views of the ocean stretching out before me. It was easy to see why this area is a UNESCO World Heritage site; the natural beauty is simply awe-inspiring.

As I drove, I kept my eyes peeled for the island's famous wildlife. It wasn't long before I spotted a troop of Yakushima macaques lounging by the roadside. These monkeys, endemic to the island, are smaller and more docile than their mainland counterparts. They seemed completely unfazed by my presence, allowing me to observe them from a respectful distance as they groomed each other and played in the trees. It was a truly special moment, witnessing these creatures in their natural habitat.

Further along the road, I encountered a herd of Yakushima deer grazing peacefully in a meadow. These deer are also unique to the island, known for their small size and gentle nature. They were equally unconcerned by my presence, allowing me to capture some stunning photographs of them against the backdrop of the rolling hills. I made sure to keep a respectful distance, remembering the importance of preserving their natural habitat. The experience was a photographer's dream, and I felt incredibly fortunate to witness these beautiful animals in their natural environment.

Continuing my drive, I made a stop at the Yakushima Visitor Centre. Eager to learn more about the island's unique ecosystem and conservation efforts, I spent a couple of hours exploring the exhibits and displays. The center provided a wealth of information on Yakushima's flora and fauna, as well as the challenges of preserving its natural heritage. I was particularly impressed by the exhibits on the island's ancient cedar trees, some of which are over a thousand years old. It's incredible to think of the history these trees have witnessed and the resilience they possess.

The end of a journey is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new perspective.

Leaving the visitor center, I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for the importance of conservation. It's up to all of us to protect these natural treasures for future generations. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a small book on Yakushima's wildlife and a handcrafted cedar ornament. These items will serve as a reminder of my time on the island and the lessons I've learned here.

For lunch, I decided to try Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its local dishes and traditional Japanese fare. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the flying fish set, a Yakushima specialty, and was not disappointed. The fish was fresh and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the accompanying rice and miso soup. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, and I savored every bite.

After lunch, I ventured to Wood Shop Kikori, a local craft store specializing in handcrafted wooden products. The owner, a former Yakushima forester, uses locally sourced cedar to create a wide range of unique souvenirs and gifts. I was immediately drawn to the intricate carvings and the beautiful grain of the wood. I purchased a small wooden bowl, a perfect memento of my time in Yakushima's forests. It was wonderful to support a local artisan and bring home a piece of the island's natural beauty.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to an early dinner at Subarashi Indian Restaurant. While Indian cuisine may seem out of place on a Japanese island, I had heard rave reviews about this restaurant and was curious to try it for myself. I ordered a vegetarian curry, specifying that I wanted it made vegan, and was blown away by the flavors. The curry was rich and aromatic, with just the right amount of spice. It was a delicious and unexpected culinary experience, and I left feeling completely satisfied.

Reflecting on my solo journey, I realize how much I've grown and learned. Traveling alone has its challenges, but it also offers unparalleled opportunities for self-discovery and reflection. I've learned to rely on myself, to trust my instincts, and to embrace the unexpected. I've also discovered a newfound appreciation for the kindness and generosity of strangers. From the friendly locals who offered me directions to the fellow travelers who shared their stories, I've been touched by the warmth and hospitality of the people I've met along the way.

My thoughts drifted to Liam back in Banff. I imagined him at the brewery, the familiar scent of hops filling the air. I smiled, picturing his ruggedly handsome face and the comforting weight of his hand in mine. I missed him dearly, but I knew he understood my need for these solo adventures. He always encouraged me to follow my passions and explore the world, knowing that I would return with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration.

As I prepare to leave Yakushima, I carry with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences. I'll never forget the ancient forests, the dramatic coastlines, and the abundant wildlife. I'll cherish the moments of solitude and reflection, as well as the connections I've made with fellow travelers. And I'll always be grateful for the opportunity to have explored this magical island on my own terms.

While I'm sad to leave Yakushima, I'm also excited about what lies ahead. Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Kagoshima, then Tokyo, and finally, home to Banff. I can't wait to share my stories and photographs with Liam, and to begin planning our next adventure together. Until then, Yakushima will remain in my heart, a reminder of the power of nature and the beauty of solo travel. It’s time to return home, to share my stories with Liam, and to plan our next adventure together. The memories and experiences from this solo journey will undoubtedly enrich our future travels and our life together in Banff.

Tomorrow marks the end of the trip. I'll be making my way back to Kagoshima and then onwards to Tokyo before my flight back to Canada. It's a bittersweet feeling, leaving behind this enchanting island, but I'm also filled with anticipation for the journey home and reuniting with Liam. I already know that Yakushima will hold a special place in my heart, and I'm sure I'll be back someday to explore more of its hidden treasures.
