Exploring the Enchanting Landscapes of The Burren
Day 10: A Day of Prehistoric Wonders and Irish Spirits in The Burren
Exploring The Burren's ancient landscapes, charming pubs, and culinary delights with Astrid and Liam in the heart of Ireland.
Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present
Today felt like stepping back in time, intertwined with the warm embrace of Irish hospitality. The Burren revealed more of its secrets, and we savored every moment, from exploring ancient parks to enjoying the local flavors. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the blend of discovery and connection.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Linnanes Pub. This charming spot, with its traditional feel, was the perfect way to start our explorations. I opted for a classic Irish breakfast, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried their seafood offering. Fuelled up, we set off to our first destination: The Burren Nature Sanctuary & Botanical Collection.
Discover the stunning biodiversity and educational wonders of Burren Nature Sanctuary in County Galway, a must-visit for nature lovers and families.
The Burren Nature Sanctuary was a delightful surprise. As a wildlife photographer, I was immediately drawn to the unique flora and fauna. The sanctuary is set on a 50-acre organic farm, offering a perfect introduction to the Burren landscape. We strolled through ancient woodlands, over limestone pavements, and across wildflower meadows. It was fascinating to see the diverse plant life thriving in this rocky terrain. I even borrowed a wildflower ID book to identify some of the unique species.
We also had the chance to meet some friendly farm animals. I was particularly charmed by Amelia the pig, who was the sweetest girl. Liam and I enjoyed a snack at the café, savoring the local produce. The sanctuary is doing incredible work in biodiversity conservation, partnering with Galway University. It's inspiring to see such dedication to preserving this unique environment.
The earth has music for those who listen.
Next on our itinerary was Cavan Burren Park, a prehistoric park boasting megalithic tombs and stunning geology. This park is located on a limestone plateau, much like The Burren in County Clare. As we walked the trails, we were transported back thousands of years. The park features over 80 archaeological monuments, including the Giant's Grave and Calf House Dolmen.

Liam was in his element, excitedly pointing out the various geological formations. The limestone bedrock, formed 340 million years ago in a tropical sea, is truly awe-inspiring. Glaciers deposited enormous boulders throughout the park during the last Ice Age, adding to the dramatic landscape. We explored the Interpretive Loop and Boulder Trail, learning about the park's history and geology.
After a day of exploring, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We stopped at The Burren Storehouse in Lisdoonvarna. This spacious venue had a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding. The Burren Storehouse is right next door to the Roadside Tavern. They are known for their artisan pizzas with delicious toppings. Liam was thrilled to discover they also offered craft beers from the Burren Brewery. I savored a pizza with local smoked salmon and St. Tola goat cheese, a true taste of the Burren.

As evening approached, we headed back towards our guesthouse, but not before a stop at O'Loclainn's Irish Whiskey Bar in Ballyvaughan. This sixth-generation family-run pub is a gem. Stepping inside felt like entering a different world – a cozy, rustic setting free from televisions and ringing mobile phones.

O'Loclainn's is renowned for its extensive selection of Irish whiskeys. Liam, a true whiskey enthusiast, was in heaven. He sampled a few local varieties, chatting with the bartender about the different distilleries. The warm atmosphere and engaging conversations made it a memorable experience. It's a place to share stories and enjoy the simple pleasure of a good drink.
For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves at The Wild Atlantic Lodge. The Wildflower Restaurant at the lodge is known for its elegant atmosphere and high-quality service. We started with the seafood chowder, a creamy and flavorful delight. For my main course, I chose the grilled Atlantic salmon, while Liam opted for the prime Irish Angus sirloin. The Wild Atlantic Lodge strives to source the finest and freshest ingredients. The beef and lamb are from their own farm in Kilkee. The seafood is supplied by local fishermen. The salad leaves are grown in nearby Bellharbour. The meal was a perfect end to a day of exploration and indulgence.

As we sipped our after-dinner drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. The Burren had once again captivated us with its ancient landscapes and warm hospitality. I felt a deep connection to this land, its history etched in every stone and whispered in every breeze. I’m so grateful to share these experiences with Liam, who always makes every adventure even more special. I am also grateful for the opportunity to document it all and share it with you all, here on Evendo.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Burren adventure. We plan to visit the Burren Farm Experience and Dysert O'Dea Castle and Archaeology Centre. I am looking forward to one last day of exploration before we head back to Banff. I am sure that the memories of the Burren will stay with us long after we leave this enchanting place.
The weather in October has been quite mild, with daytime temperatures around 15°C. However, there has also been high precipitation, so we've been sure to pack our rain jackets. The wind has been gentle, making it comfortable for hiking and exploring.
Until tomorrow,
Astrid
