Day 2: Chasing Waterfalls and Local Flavors in Skaftafell
Discovering the majestic Svartifoss waterfall and savoring local cuisine in Skaftafell, Iceland with family. A day of natural beauty!
Svartifoss Beckons
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Skaftafell. We set out to conquer the Svartifoss Trail, and discover hidden gems in the local culinary scene. The crisp Icelandic air and promise of a majestic waterfall fueled our adventurous spirits.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Munkar in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Liam and I always appreciate a good local spot, and this one didn't disappoint. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for their traditional Icelandic breakfast, while Liam, ever the burger enthusiast, went for their breakfast burger. The kids enjoyed some pastries. Fuelled up, we drove towards Skaftafell, the landscape transforming into a winter wonderland as we approached Vatnajökull National Park.
Arriving at Skaftafell, we bundled up in our warmest layers, double-checking that everyone had their gloves and hats securely in place. I made a mental note to add extra camera batteries to our essentials list; capturing these moments is paramount, and running out of power would be a photographer's worst nightmare. The Svartifoss Trail awaited, promising a moderately challenging hike to one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls.
The trail was well-marked, but the winter conditions added an extra layer of adventure. Patches of ice and snow covered the path, requiring careful footing and sturdy hiking boots. I was thankful we'd packed ours; they made a world of difference. The kids, of course, treated the icy patches like a playground, sliding and giggling their way up the trail. Liam and I exchanged amused glances, reminding each other to embrace their youthful energy.
As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. We passed by other smaller waterfalls cascading down the mountainside, each one a miniature spectacle in its own right. The landscape was a study in contrasts: the stark black rock formations against the pristine white snow, the roaring water against the silent stillness of the winter air. I found myself stopping frequently, captivated by the sheer beauty of it all. I took the opportunity to capture the moment with my camera, hoping to convey the magic of this place to those who couldn't be here with us.
Finally, after about an hour of hiking, we reached Svartifoss. The sight that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. The waterfall cascaded down a cliff framed by towering basalt columns, creating a scene of dramatic beauty. The black columns against the white water created a striking contrast, making it a photographer's dream. I spent a good amount of time finding the perfect angle, experimenting with different exposures to capture the essence of this natural wonder.

Nature's artistry is at its finest in Iceland, where the elements conspire to create scenes of unparalleled beauty.
We took our time at Svartifoss, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the sense of accomplishment that came with reaching our destination. The kids were fascinated by the basalt columns, asking questions about how they were formed and why they were so perfectly shaped. I did my best to explain the geological processes at play, feeling a surge of pride in sharing my knowledge with them.
Back in Skaftafell, we decided to visit the UNA Local Product shop. I love discovering local crafts and supporting artisans, and this shop seemed like the perfect place to do so. We browsed through the selection of handmade goods, admiring the intricate textiles, ceramics, and woodwork. I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Iceland. The kids, of course, gravitated towards the sweets, and we left with a bag full of Icelandic chocolate.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Systrakaffi in Kirkjubaejarklaustur for lunch. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of local specialties. Liam and I both opted for the traditional Icelandic lamb soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed us from the inside out. The kids, predictably, went for pizza, which they devoured with gusto. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

For dinner we headed to Skaftfell Bistro. The friendly staff made great suggestions. The steak was tender, the au jus delicious, and the cod flaky and buttery. We took a short walk on a trail behind the restaurant, where there was a waterfall.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about our plans to explore Svínfellsjökull Útsýnisstaður and the Skaftafell Glacier. I've heard that the views from Svínfellsjökull are incredible, and I'm eager to capture them with my camera. And of course, a visit to Skaftafell Glacier is a must; I'm hoping to get some close-up shots of the ice formations and maybe even spot some wildlife. We'll start the day with breakfast at Glacier Goodies, and then we'll be off to explore. Lunch will be at Hvönn Restaurant and dinner at Ishusid Pizzeria Restaurant. I'm also hoping to check out Smiðjan Brugghús, a local brewery, for a taste of Icelandic beer.
Tonight, as I sit here writing this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Today was a day of pure magic, a day of exploring natural wonders, savoring local flavors, and creating lasting memories with my family. Iceland, you continue to amaze me. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The hike to Svartifoss had been challenging but rewarding, the waterfall a sight to behold. The local crafts we discovered at UNA Local Product were unique and beautiful, and the food we enjoyed at Systrakaffi was delicious and comforting. But more than anything, I was grateful for the time spent with my family, for the laughter, the shared experiences, and the memories we were creating together. These are the moments that truly matter, the moments that make life worth living. As I closed my eyes, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring even more adventures.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Svínfellsjökull Útsýnisstaður for panoramic views and get up close to the Skaftafell Glacier. I'm eager to see what wonders await us as we continue our icy adventure through Skaftafell. I'm also excited to try some of the local cuisine at Hvönn Restaurant and Ishusid Pizzeria Restaurant. And if time allows, Liam and I might sneak away for a quick drink at Smiðjan Brugghús.
We are truly making the most of this trip!
