Embark on our family's Icelandic adventure! From Skaftafellsstofa to Vatnajökull, experience glaciers, cozy cafes, and the magic of Iceland.
Chasing Glaciers: Our Skaftafell Arrival
After a long journey from Banff, filled with anticipation and the usual travel day chaos, we finally arrived in Skaftafell, Iceland!
The crisp, clean air and the vast, snow-dusted landscapes immediately made us feel like we had stepped into a different world. As a wildlife photographer, I've dreamed of capturing the raw beauty of Iceland, and I couldn't wait to start exploring. With Liam and the family in tow, our Icelandic adventure was officially underway.
Our first stop was Skaftafellsstofa Visitor Center.
It was a great starting point, offering us invaluable information about the park, its trails, and the surrounding area. The rangers were incredibly helpful, providing insights into the local flora and fauna, and giving us tips for safe hiking practices during the winter months. Plus, I managed to snag a few postcards for my collection—a tradition I uphold in every new place I visit.

Of course, I had forgotten a travel guidebook, but made sure to grab one at the visitor center shop.
The kids were excited to look through the maps and plan our hikes for the coming days, especially after hearing about the Svartifoss Trail for tomorrow. It sounds like it will be the perfect place to capture some amazing pictures!
Sometimes, the most breathtaking adventures begin with a simple step into the unknown.
After gathering all the necessary information, we ventured into the heart of Vatnajökull National Park.
The sheer scale of the glaciers was awe-inspiring. The landscape was a mix of icy plains and snow-covered peaks. Although some of the longer trails are inaccessible during winter, we found a shorter route that offered stunning panoramic views. I spent a good amount of time trying to capture the perfect shot of the glacier, playing with the light and shadows to convey its immense size and power.

The weather in Skaftafell in February is definitely something to be prepared for.
It was cold, with temperatures hovering around freezing, and the wind added an extra bite. We were grateful for our warm layers and sturdy hiking boots. The kids, initially enthusiastic, started to feel the chill after a couple of hours, so we decided to seek refuge in a cozy café.
For breakfast, we stopped at Saatvik Restaurant (Kaffiterían Skaftafelli).
It’s conveniently located in the visitor center, making it a perfect spot to fuel up before our explorations. The kids enjoyed some warm pastries, while Liam and I opted for some traditional Icelandic coffee. I even tried their vegan cheesecake, which was surprisingly delicious!

Lunch was a quick and satisfying affair at Glacier Goodies.
The fast-food joint provided us with the energy we needed to continue our adventure. We grabbed some burgers and fries, enjoying them while taking in the views of the surrounding landscapes. It wasn't gourmet, but it was perfect for a quick bite and the location couldn't be beat.

In the late afternoon, we decided to warm up with a drink at Cafe Vatnajökull.
The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with large windows offering breathtaking views of the park. We sipped on hot chocolates and shared stories from our day, laughing about our near-slips on the icy trails and marveling at the beauty of the glaciers. It was the perfect way to unwind and recharge before dinner.

We drove to Höfn for dinner at Pakkhús Restaurant.
The drive itself was stunning, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the snow-covered landscapes. Pakkhús is known for its seafood and cozy atmosphere. Liam and I indulged in some fresh langoustine, while the kids enjoyed some hearty lamb dishes. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

As we drove back to our accommodation, the stars began to emerge, twinkling against the dark sky.
We even caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing faintly in the distance. It was a magical end to our first day in Skaftafell, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to hike the Svartifoss Trail and visit Svartifoss itself. I am hoping to get some great shots of the waterfall. We'll also stop by UNA Local Product / Sveitabúðin Una to pick up some local crafts.
Even though I had forgotten some extra camera batteries, I am still happy with the shots I was able to capture today!
I am already looking forward to capturing more in the coming days.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that Skaftafell is more than just a destination; it's an experience.
It's a place where the raw power of nature meets the warmth of human connection. I am excited to continue our journey, capturing the beauty of this icy wonderland and sharing it with all of you.
The mix of ice and fire, the long nights and short days, the promise of the Northern Lights – it’s a photographer’s dream come true, and I’m so glad to be sharing it with my family.
