Exploring the Mystical Myvatn Region in Iceland
Day 3: A Day of Discovery Around Lake Mývatn: Bird Museums and Volcanic Wonders
Exploring the unique landscapes and wildlife of Lake Mývatn, from pseudo-craters to bird museums, with Astrid and Liam.
A Day of Wonders Unveiled
Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the unique landscapes and culture of the Mývatn region. From fascinating geological formations to a touching tribute to Iceland's birdlife, every moment was filled with discovery. It’s amazing how much this area has to offer, and I'm excited to share our experiences.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Gamli Bærinn. Liam and I enjoyed some pastries and coffee, fueling up for a day of adventure. The tavern-like atmosphere was cozy, and it felt like a perfect way to start the day, especially knowing we had a full itinerary ahead. It's funny, even though we're in Iceland, I couldn't help but think of our little bakery back in Banff. I miss our regular customers and the smell of fresh bread, but adventures like these make it all worthwhile.
Exploring Skútustaðir's Pseudo-Craters
Our first stop was Skútustaðir, a collection of pseudo-craters formed thousands of years ago. These aren't your typical volcanic craters; they were created by steam explosions when hot lava flowed over wetlands. The result is a surreal landscape of small, rounded hills that dot the area. Liam and I took a leisurely walk along the marked paths, marveling at the unique formations and the stunning views of Lake Mývatn. The air was crisp, and the sun cast long shadows, making the landscape even more dramatic.

I couldn't resist pulling out my camera to capture the beauty of the craters. The way the light played on the hills, the reflections in the surrounding water – it was a photographer's dream. I even managed to get some shots of local birdlife, including several species of ducks that call this area home. Skútustaðir is a birdwatcher's paradise, and I was in my element.
The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand landscapes, but also in the subtle details that reveal the forces of nature at play.
A Tribute to Avian Life: Sigurgeir's Bird Museum
Next on our list was Sigurgeir's Bird Museum, a place I had been particularly excited about. Sigurgeir Stefánsson was an avid bird and egg collector, and his passion for avian life is beautifully preserved in this museum. The museum houses the largest private collection of stuffed birds in Iceland, with specimens of nearly every Icelandic breeding bird. As someone deeply interested in wildlife, I found this museum incredibly moving.

The architectural design of the museum blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Inside, the exhibits are thoughtfully arranged, with birds displayed in a circular layout around a central stream. I spent hours wandering through the collection, pressing buttons to illuminate the birds and learning about their habitats and behaviors. Liam, surprisingly, was just as engrossed as I was. He even discovered a newfound appreciation for the Arctic Tern, despite my constant warnings about their territorial nature. We both agreed that Sigurgeir's Bird Museum is a testament to the dedication of one man and a beautiful tribute to Iceland's birdlife.
Scientific Exploration at Mývatn Research Station
Our afternoon took us to the Mývatn Research Station, a hub for scientific study in the area. While we couldn't participate in active research, we learned about the station's ongoing work in monitoring the lake's ecosystem, studying waterfowl populations, and assessing the impact of geothermal activity. It was fascinating to hear about the long-term research projects that have been taking place here since 1975. The station plays a crucial role in understanding and protecting the unique environment of Lake Mývatn.

I was particularly interested in the research on the local midge population. Lake Mývatn gets its name from these tiny insects, and their presence is a vital part of the ecosystem. The research station is studying the midge's life cycle, their role in nutrient cycling, and how they are affected by environmental changes. It's amazing to think that such a small creature can have such a significant impact on the entire lake. It reminded me of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of conservation efforts.
Before leaving, we stopped by Krambúðin Reykjahlíð to pick up a few snacks. This grocery store is a local gem, offering everything from fresh produce to Icelandic specialties. It was a great place to mingle with locals and stock up on essentials for our trip. I grabbed some Skyr for a healthy snack and a few Icelandic chocolate bars for a sweet treat. Liam, of course, headed straight for the beer section.

Dinner at Eldey Restaurant
As evening approached, we headed to Eldey Restaurant for dinner. Located in Hótel Laxá, this restaurant is known for its authentic Icelandic cuisine and its focus on local ingredients. The chef creates a menu around the uniqueness of the Mývatn region, using Arctic char from Húsavík and lamb and beef from North Iceland. All the fresh vegetables and fruits come from nearby farms in Hveravellir, grown in geothermally heated greenhouses.

I ordered the Arctic char, while Liam opted for the lamb. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The Arctic char was delicate and flaky, with a hint of smokiness, while the lamb was tender and rich, with a delicious red wine sauce. We savored every bite, enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant and the stunning views of Lake Mývatn. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.
After dinner, we took a stroll along the lake, enjoying the soft evening light. The sky was painted with hues of pink and orange, and the air was filled with the sounds of birdsong. It was a magical moment, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Iceland with my husband by my side.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Selfoss, Grenjaðarstaður - the Old Turfhouse, and Stóragjá. I'm particularly excited about Stóragjá, a small lava cave with a crystal-clear hot spring. I've heard it's a hidden gem and a must-visit for photographers. We'll also be trying out Vogafjós Farm Resort for breakfast, Kaffi Sel and Mývatn öl brewery for lunch, and Mylla Restaurant for dinner. And if we have time, we might even stop by Jaja Ding Dong Húsavík for a drink.
Tonight, as I write this, I can't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we've had today. The Mývatn region is a place of wonder, where nature and culture come together in perfect harmony. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'm content to soak in the memories of this magical day. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and why I love sharing my experiences with all of you.
Tomorrow we are heading to Selfoss, Grenjaðarstaður, and Stóragjá, so stay tuned!
