Exploring the Mystical Myvatn Region in Iceland
Day 2: Venturing into Iceland's Volcanic Heart: A Day of Fire and Ice
Explore the raw beauty of Myvatn's volcanic landscapes: Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá, and Hverir reveal Iceland's geothermal wonders with Astrid and Liam.
A Dance with Volcanoes
Today, Liam and I dove headfirst into the volcanic heart of the Myvatn region. It's a landscape that constantly reminds you of the raw power simmering beneath your feet, a world where fire and ice meet in the most spectacular way. As a wildlife photographer, I'm used to capturing the serene beauty of nature, but here, nature felt untamed, almost rebellious.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. It was a cozy start, the warmth of the coffee and the friendly atmosphere setting the stage for the adventures ahead. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Dimmuborgir lava field.
Dimmuborgir: The Dark Fortress
As we approached Dimmuborgir, the landscape transformed dramatically. Jagged, black rock formations rose from the earth like the ruins of an ancient, forgotten city. The name, meaning 'Dark Castles,' couldn't be more fitting. According to local folklore, Dimmuborgir is believed to connect earth with infernal regions and is home to trolls. I could almost feel their presence lurking behind the towering lava pillars.
Walking through the lava field felt like stepping onto another planet. The dramatic structures, formed over 2,300 years ago when lava flowed over a lake, were awe-inspiring. Liam was fascinated by the geology of the place, while I was more drawn to the play of light and shadow on the bizarre formations. I tried to capture the essence of this otherworldly place with my camera, hoping to convey the sense of mystery and ancient power that permeated the air. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the various paths, each turn revealing a new, breathtaking vista. The scale of the lava field is immense, and it's easy to feel lost in its labyrinthine depths. I made sure to keep Liam in sight, not wanting to actually get lost in the dark fortress.

Grjótagjá: A Hidden Gem
Next on our itinerary was Grjótagjá, a small lava cave famous for its geothermal hot spring. This location gained notoriety after being featured in Game of Thrones, where it served as the backdrop for a love scene between Jon Snow and Ygritte. I must confess, I'm a big fan of the show, so visiting this place felt extra special.
The cave itself is tucked away, and it took us a little while to find the entrance. The path leading down to it was rocky and uneven, but the effort was well worth it. As we descended into the cave, the air grew warmer, and the faint smell of sulfur filled our nostrils. The turquoise water of the hot spring shimmered in the dim light, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Although it's no longer safe to bathe in the cave due to unpredictable water temperatures, the beauty of the place was undeniable. I could easily see why it was chosen as a filming location; it's a truly magical spot.

I spent some time photographing the cave from different angles, trying to capture the unique colors and textures of the rock formations. Liam, ever the history buff, was intrigued by the story of Jón Markússon, an outlaw who lived in the cave in the early 18th century. It's fascinating to think about the people who have sought refuge in this hidden gem over the centuries.
After exploring Grjótagjá, we were ready for a late lunch. We stopped at Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn, a charming little spot where we enjoyed some of the freshest, most delicious fish and chips I've ever tasted. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning of exploring volcanic landscapes.
Hverir: Another Planet on Earth
Our final stop of the day was Hverir, a geothermal area that felt like stepping onto an alien planet. As we approached, the air filled with the pungent smell of sulfur, and the ground beneath our feet turned a surreal shade of ochre. Steam vents and bubbling mud pots dotted the landscape, creating a scene of constant activity and change.

Walking through Hverir was an assault on the senses. The ground was hot and unstable in places, and the air was thick with steam. The vibrant colors of the mineral deposits – yellows, reds, and browns – created a stark contrast against the barren surroundings. It was a landscape of extremes, both beautiful and intimidating. I felt a sense of awe and respect for the power of nature.
I tried to capture the essence of Hverir with my camera, but it was a challenge. The scale of the place was so vast, and the details were so intricate. I focused on the textures of the mud pots, the patterns of the mineral deposits, and the swirling steam vents. I wanted to convey the feeling of being on another planet, a place where the Earth's inner workings were on full display.
Liam and I walked around Hverir for what seemed like hours, marveling at the geothermal activity. It was fascinating to see the raw energy of the Earth bubbling to the surface. I couldn't help but think about the geological forces that have shaped this region over millions of years. It's a humbling experience to witness such power firsthand.
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Daddi's Pizza for dinner. It was a welcome change of pace after a day of exploring the rugged landscapes of Myvatn. The pizza was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. We shared stories of our adventures, reminiscing about the dark castles of Dimmuborgir, the hidden beauty of Grjótagjá, and the alien landscapes of Hverir.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to check out R5 Micro Bar. It was a cozy little place and a must-visit spot for tourists. The bar showcased a wide range of local beers and unique cocktails. We enjoyed the bar snacks as well as local art. It was a perfect way to cap off an adventurous day.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Skútastaðir, Sigurgeir's Bird Museum, and the Mývatn Research Station. I'm particularly excited about visiting the bird museum, as I'm eager to learn more about the local avian wildlife.
Today was a reminder of the incredible diversity of Iceland's landscapes. From the dark, imposing formations of Dimmuborgir to the otherworldly geothermal activity of Hverir, the Myvatn region is a place that truly captures the imagination. I feel so grateful to be able to experience this with Liam by my side. Every day is a new adventure, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
